Welcome to the all new VGChartz Gap chartz. This month I've added an X360 Vs. Wii UK chart, as the gap there is closing considerably. In the coming months I will add a 3DS Vs. Vita chart, and any single region charts where the Vita dominates the 3DS, should that happen. Below are the 3 standard charts, PS3 Vs. X360 Global, X360 Vs. Wii Americas and PS3 Vs. Wii EMEAA.
Global:
Gap change in October: 204,401 - PlayStation 3
Gap change over last 12 months: 733,296 - PlayStation 3
Total Lead: 2,506,290 - Xbox 360
October saw major adjustments, mainly for the PlayStation 3, and so the overall gap lowered considerably. This is by far the lowest the gap has ever been and if the trend continues it should be well below 2 million by the end of the year. However, what could Microsoft have up their sleeves to prevent this? As we edge closer to christmas, year over year the landscape is very different. This time last year Kinect launched and the 360 began to outsell the PS3, but with no price cuts or anything else to boost 360 sales the PS3 is still the dominant console going into November.
Americas:
Gap change in October: 154,771 - Xbox 360
Gap change over last 12 months: 985,385 - Xbox 360
Total Lead: 8,471,927 - Wii
The gap somewhat slowed this month with no Gears of War to boost sales. The gap is now below 8.5 million. Going into November, Modern Warfare 3 will boost X360 HW substantially and should help towards a 300k gain over the Wii with or without a possible price cut. If Microsoft really want to makes strides in America, however, they will need to produce something before Black Friday, as the X360 is still the same price as it is last year, whilst the Wii is getting $99 deals.
EMEAA:
Gap change in October: 313,243 - PlayStation 3
Gap change over last 12 months: 1,093,279 - PlayStation 3
Total Lead: 8,488,320 - Wii
The PS3 price cut effect is in full swing and, including adjustments, this helps drop the gap to below 8.5 million. For comparison, last month it was over 9.1 million. Going forwards, the PS3 is demonstrating a strong showing, far ahead of the Wii in EMEAA. It looks incredibly unlikely the Wii will overtake the PS3 this year in weekly sales - more likely is them doing on par with each other.
UK:
Gap change in October: 77,163 - Xbox 360
Gap change over last 12 months: 612,972 - Xbox 360
Total Lead: 1,225,717 - Wii
Relative to Americas, the X360 is outpacing the Wii much more quickly, as you can see from the downhill slope on the chart. Outselling the Wii as much as 6 times in recent weeks, the X360 is poised for another strong holiday in the UK, whilst the Wii is down a fair bit. The Wii is, however, getting below £100 deals, so Microsoft will have to come up with at least some tempting bundles to offset that, if not a price cut. If they do cut price, the gap could be closed to below 1 million by the end of the year.

Nice as usual. But I thought the inclusion of X360 vs. Wii in the UK was a bit random. If you do that, couldn't you also include PS3 vs. X360 in Australia or other interesting battles WW? Anyway thanks.
Indeed, I'm not adding any tiny markets, also it would actually be a feat if X360 overtook Wii in the second largest market in the world (which it looks like it's set to do)
But why is there a X360 vs Wii (America's) chart? Nothing to see there, right?

The PS3/360 gap is downto 2.5 million. If MS doesn't try next year, and remains greedy, PS3 will topple 360 in total sales by latest 2013.

I can't understand where this notion that UK is the 2nd largest market comes from. In 2006 the DS sold only 4 million less in Japan than it's done lifetime in the UK and this week the 3DS sold more in Japan than any console has ever done in a non-holiday week in the UK I believe. Although I'd say the 360 Vs. Wii chart is warranted as this will be the first major market, not counting MEAA, where Wii falls to 2nd place.
Like others have said. A wii vs ps3 Japan would be welcome :)
Ms doesn't like to lose. I fully expect MS to react with both a large price cut as well as big bundles and holiday deals.
