Uncharted 3 Ships 3.8m First Day - News

by Miles Taven , posted on 10 November 2011 / 12,174 Views

Following on from its first week sales of 1 million plus sold to consumers, Sony have released a statement revealing Uncharted 3 shipments:

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception™ day one global sales of 3.8 million units. The PlayStation®3 exclusive title – released to universal critical acclaim (Metacritic: 92*) – has smashed sales expectations to become one of the best-selling titles of 2011, putting the third instalment on a clear course to be the biggest selling game in the trilogy.

Nick Caplin Head of Communications at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe commented, “Uncharted 3 is a blockbuster and these incredible sales figures reflect that. Consumers are clearly as eager to play the game as critics were to heap praise upon it, and the team at Naughty Dog deserve this fantastic reception at retail.

“The Uncharted series, exclusive to PlayStation®3, has redefined the third-person adventure genre and is now one of the leading franchises available.”

The 3.8 million number is shipped. It's simply not possible that Uncharted 3 sold that many copies to consumers in one day. That's Call of Duty level sales and Uncharted, one of my favorite franchises, is nowhere near that. People need to understand that what Sony considers sold and shipped is not what the rest of us consider to be sold or shipped. For us, we consider sold to be sold to consumer and shipped to be sold to retailers. Sony however considers sold to be arrived at retailers and shipped to be en route to retailers or stocked at warehouses. That is the discrepency between what Sony says and what the facts show.

So Sony says they sold that amount and IGN confirms that the "confusion" was cleared up and it was indeed sold, not shipped.....you still title the article as shipped. Superb

This is rather confusing. At first I just thought it was people making it up, but it is clear that Sony have said this, but I really can't believe that firstly there are 2.8m copies sitting on shelves, and secondly that it is sold to consumers, I just don't believe that many could be sold and it could be 2nd to Battlefield 3's 2nd week in the UK

Im beginning to question VGchartz tracking. If 3.8 million turns out to be true they really dropped the ball.

It's shipped. Quote "To verify, the statistic is for how many units were shipped to retailers, it’s not how many were actually flogged to you, the gamers."

Love it how other sites have the same news but say 4 million "sold" rather "shipped. So who do you believe? Check out sixthaxis's story!!! WTF.

Interesting. If Uncharted 3 had preorders around 1m worldwide, you would think it would sell at least another 1m for those customers why buy it at shop and I think that is where large margin of sales would come. So I would had assumed 1 week sales would be 2m and that would make sense on 3,8m shipped to stores, with bundles included.

Cirio (on 10 November 2011)

So according to you people saying that it sold 3.8 million to customers on DAY ONE, Uncharted is as big as Call of Duty on the PS3?

  • +1
dsage01 (on 10 November 2011)

It looks a bit under tracked but anyways the 3.8 million should be sold by the end of the year.

okr (on 12 November 2011)

It will take some time until the remaining >2 million copies of this 1st shipment sell to customers.

Part of the VGchartz methodology for sales is hype. In this case, it was compared to games like BF3 & MW3 plus its preorders. They also forgot that traditionally, people go to the shops to buy games(many of sony's fans grew up that way) and this still exists with many individuals and other parts of the globe. It should be clear that most of sony's console sales are outside US.
VGChartz could be mistaken in this case and i hope they rectifies the methodology.

omfg what a bunch of stupid people..
SONY SOLD 3.8 mil units to STORE'S but yea uncharted3 is undertracked noo questions about that.

Troll_Whisperer (on 10 November 2011)

U2 sold 850k FW and 2.1m in 2009. U3 sold 1.2m FW so it may sell around 3.1m in 2011. A 3.8m shipment would ensure enough copies for the holidays and a few extra. VGC numbers seem quite fine IMO.

it's very hard to believe that it sold 3.8m first day, but if Sony says so...

Even if is shipped does distribuitors pay Sony upfront or not? Because if they do then of course Sony will say "sold".

BHR-3 (on 10 November 2011)

we all know this is shipped not b/c "oh UC would never be able to do those numbers" but b/c thats how sony rolls, there sold means sold to retailers. the problem i and a few others are having is with VGCs 1st week numbers of 1.2M, why would they ship that high amount? where would retailers keep the extra stock, its the holiday time now there are other big games releasing or released that are also taking up stock like BF, MW and skyrim.

also UC2 LT sales are 5M sold to costumers hands, you have to remember that other than myself no one knew how big UC2 would be so its acceptable for its 1st week/month sales not to be that huge i find it hard that out of that 5M that only 1M bought UC3 in its first week especially with all the trash taking on the net of PS fans saying UC2 and 3 are the best action/adventure games ever and have the best console graphics to date

  • -1
RiotX BHR-3 (on 10 November 2011)

they keep it in the same place they keep games like MW3 and battlefield 3. How else do you think those game are able to sell so many games in one day.

Well now, if they 'sold' 3.8 mil, how many were shipped? Because if they sold the 3.8 mil they shipped, then there are no copies on shelves.

  • -8
enrageorange (on 10 November 2011)

What does overshipped even mean... Those 3.9mil copies will eventually sell so how did they ship too much. I don't think its overtracked in EMEAA considering battlefield 3 (ps3) beat it in pretty much every single region in PAL charts that they got released in the same week. We don't really get any reliable data for USA until NPD comes out. But this should sell a good chunk of that shipment by the end of the year.
