The All New VGChartz Gap Charts, August 2011 Update - News
by Miles Taven , posted on 05 September 2011 / 6,247 ViewsWelcome to the all new VGChartz Gap chartz. If you visited this article before you'll remember 5 distinctive charts, Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 in every region, plus a Global chart, as well as a Wii Vs. PS3 & 360 (HD) chart. As this generation begins to come to a close most of these charts were very unlikely to show any sort of change in direction, so they have been retired. The PS3 Vs. Xbox 360 Global chart remains, still managing to duke out who wins 5 years down the line, this is still very much an interesting battle to watch. I've added two new charts to make up for the loss, Wii Vs. Xbox 360 in Americas, and Wii Vs. Playstation 3 in EMEAA. Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have been and should continue to diminish the gap in their respective regions and may even come close to overtaking the Wii. Later in the year I will be adding a PSvita and Nintendo 3DS gap chart.

Global:
Gap change in August: 154,520 - Playstation 3
Gap change over last 12 months: 352,499 - Playstation 3
Total Lead: 3,235,217 - Xbox 360
Sony this month announced a price cut at Gamescom (August 16th) on the Playstation 3 effective immediately, $50 in the states (16%), €50 in Europe (16%), £50 in the United Kingdom (20%), and a significant cut in Australia to finally bring the price down there to parity with the U.S price (retailers have cut up to 40% in some cases). This helped the PS3 almost double the rate it was closing the gap previously. Unpredictably, EMEAA has seen the strongest effect of the price cut, being the PS3's strongest territory and thanks to the big UK/AUS cuts. As of last week the current rate the PS3 is outselling the 360 weekly is around 80k units. If Microsoft don't announce a price cut during September, the PS3 could close the gap as much as 300k units, although that's unlikely as Gears of War 3 is set to give the 360 a boost with the custom bundles. 200-250k is a good ball park without Microsoft intervening. If they do cut, however, along with Gears, it's likely it's the 360 that will open the gap. TGS is coming; this will likely be the platform for any announcements, until then it's up in the air how much the gap will continue to close. Also to note, this is the lowest the gap has ever been.
Americas:
Gap change in August: 96,349 - Xbox 360
Gap change over last 12 months: 837,839 - Xbox 360
Total Lead: 8,906,784 - Wii
Another steady month, as the rate at which the 360 outsells the Wii in Americas doesn't move at all. The gap does, however, drop below the 9 million mark. September should see more significant gains, it being a 5 week month, Gears of War 3's release and there being a possible price cut. Also, Wii should be slowing down at this point, with no meaningful software out at all. With Gears 3 the 360 should outsell Wii next month by around 200k units. With a price cut, though, this number could obviously more than double.
EMEAA:
Gap change in August: 108,527 - Playstation 3
Gap change over last 12 months: 670,160 - Playstation 3
Total Lead: 9,345,346 - Wii
The PS3 more than doubled the rate at which it was outselling the Wii in EMEAA with the recent price cut, currently outselling it 50k units a week. With the PS3's line up hotting up now with Resistance 3, GoW Origins & Ico/Sotc Collections coming out, along with notable multiplats Vs. basically nothing for the Wii in September, it should keep a steady lead going into the holiday period and top the Wii by 200k+ units.

These gap charts are always so interesting. Keep up the good work!
Nice work as usual. I think the titles would be clearer if there was a consistent ordering: the first graph is called "360 vs PS3" and the graph is 360 minus PS3, which makes sense. However, the "360 vs Wii" graph is plotting Wii minus 360, which seems backwards. The graph should speak for itself without needing to read the "Total lead" line to know which direction the y-axis is pointing.
i think there should be a chart for japan. well done once again
These charts are a lot of fun. I would love to see some type of prediction/forecast for next 4 months, or rather HOLIDAY SEASON. Based on software that is being released and on price cuts and such. Maybe after XBOX 360 gets the price cut.
Nice. Great job.
Nice work... the regional gap are the best... maybe one for PS3 vs. Wii in Japan could be a good idea.
I wouldnt call the Australian price of $349.55 for the 160G model and $449.55 for the 360G model based on the Australian $ trading around $1.06 US parity still a damn sight better than it was.
Excellent Job Seece! Monthly and 12 month changes are appreciated.
The Xbox doesn't need a price cut. It's still outselling the PS3 in the US. Looking pretty bad in EMEAA though.
