Microsoft: Our First-Party Studios Are "Superior" to Sony & Nintendo - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 18 July 2011 / 5,834 Views

Yep, you read the headline right. Microsoft insists that their first-party studios are "superior" to Sony's and Nintendo's. If you somehow disagree, I'm guessing you're not the only one, but allow Xbox CFO Dennis Durkin to explain.

In an interview with IndustryGamers,  it was suggested to Durkin that Microsoft might need build/acquire more studios in order to beef up their development output and capabilities; Durkin answered,

I would ask you to go and look at some of your data, just to compare first party performance over the course of this lifecycle, because I think our first party performance in terms of quality bars and units per title this shift has been superior to our competition’s.

While such data is not made available publicly, Durkin followed that up with another salvo, this time extolling their franchises and how they're mulit-million sellers.

But certainly we think first party is an important tool and you can’t dispute titles like Forza, which has consistently come out on a repeated cadence and sold multi-million units. You can’t dispute things like Fable, which again, on a very consistent pace, has come out and sold 2 and 3 million units a pop. And now new titles, like Kinect Sports, which has come out and sold over 3 million units. So we are, not only building existing IP and incubating around titles like Halo and others, but really building new IP in new areas. And that’s going to be core to us... to build those experiences and monetize those.

As someone who has all three, I can honestly say that Microsoft should do a better job shoring up their games library. For comparison's sake, Sony has already released LittleBigPlanet 2, inFamous 2, Killzone 3, etc. - and we have the likes of Twisted Metal and Uncharted 3 on the horizon.

I find that this fall's Xbox lineup is devoid of any "big" games, except for Gears of War 3 and Forza 4.

For those who own all three platforms, what's your impartial take? Does Durkin has a point or does Microsoft need to shore their own IP lineup to combat Sony's and Nintendo's?

Sony is beating microsoft this year in games and sales, and nintendo just and the two mario karts released this gen kills all the sells of microsofts games. So no microsoft, you are just good for online. But that still is not going to make me buy one. PS3 and wii ( zelda) is all I need for this gen that is almost over.

If he were talking about exclusives I could even argue the point... but when he talks about FIRST PARTY them I must LOL because they just created their 1st party studios against Nintendo 30 year studios and franchises and Sony plethora of studios and IPS... he must be trolling or don't know the difference between 1st party and exclusive.

I'm just waiting till they start chest bumping each other. That is the only way to determine who is the most superior.

i now own all 3, and i can say that the biggest reason for the PS3 console sales increase is because MS has cut back on exclusives... gears is good halo is ok fable on 360 blows, other then those 3, nothing is worth mentioning. i mean forza is great and all but racing games are racing games, small niche...
i bought my PS3 recently, and will only buy exclusives on it, i think my PS3 library is almost as big as my 360 library now.

i own PS3 and 360, MS keep dreaming, Only games that made MS who they are today is tha Halo series , From Bungie, MS does not own, and Gears of war from Epic, ounce again MS does not own, Face it , if not for halo 1 and 2 there would be no xbox 360, MS should thank Bungie for EVERYTHING , literaly, One other hand Sony has games like Uncharted series, Killzone , God of War , Infamous , Little big planet, All these games are a 90 score or higher, Sony has the best first party studios, hand down, MS can not even compete from this aspect, Im sure this was in Dennis Durkins wet dream !!

I still don't see where in the quotes he makes a point against nintendo.... surely they MS games have sold well compared to PS3, but not nintendo and I doubt his intent was to boast about consistantly selling 2-3 millions when the competition is 20+M on multiple games... Then again, the original article is in the same vein and they interviewed the guys... so....

DonFerrari Hephaestos (on 18 July 2011)

Don't forget he mentioned 1st party, and nor Epic (Gears), nor Bungie (Halos), nor the studio that makes Fable are 1st parties (altought the games are exclusives)... don't know about FORZA studio.

  • +1
Teratus SONYisBP (on 12 October 2011)

Rare sucks?

you do realise that Rare's Goldeney on the N64 paved the way for every First person shooter today

dont go dissing rare man they have made some amazing contributions to the gaming world over the years

why do you think Microsoft are soo desperate tokeep them on the exsclusive contract

  • 0
Teratus (on 12 October 2011)

As usual Microsoft has shoved its head up its ass and claimed to find Diamonds

this is the typical bullcrap we always here for them

Kinect sports has nothing on Wiisports in terms of sales
with over 80 Million Wii's sold and pretty much all of them sold with a copy of Wii sports i think the number stack enormously with Nintendo

Microsoft in my opinion is the worst for first party development
not saying that microsofts exsclusive first party games are bad in any way

im saying that when they only release 3 or 4 a year when thier competators are relesing close to 10 or so thats not a good thing

Considering that Exsclusive games these days are a massive influence when you go to buy a system i have to say that Nintendo and Sony have a much bigger lure in that area

Microsoft have more than enough resorces and time to make more exsclusive FP games although wether its a lack of ideas or they simply cant be bothered is anyones guess

This guy is blown out of his mind. Someone please tell him to stop smoking up before he makes comments to the press.

When it comes to first party studios and exclusives the list goes as follows:

1st. Nintendo, I don't think that this point can be argued. As much as I wish Nintendo would give me something different , even if its just a revision of an old franchise like Zelda, or Metroid, or better yet a new IP all together with some darker tones and look to it, Nintendo is still tops in my book.

2nd. Sony, Yes they put out a lot of sequels, but they are also the only ones at this point taking risks on new IPs. From what I have heard, Sony is the only one out of the big three giving their first party developers the green light to make new and interesting IPs for us to play, aside from the already mind blowing good recently added franchises.

Distant 3rd. Microsoft. They just keep rehashing everything. Isn't 343 industries one of the first Microsoft first party studios aside from turn ten? And guess what they are working on? A halo remake and Halo 4, hardly anything new and exciting. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Gears a lot, but I have had my fill.

I own all three consoles, but my 360 has been getting less and less use for the past year and a half, possibly two. The games that have really caught my eye in this past time have been PS3 exclusives, and when it comes to having people over, there is nothing more fun than turning on the Wii and busting out some Wii Sports or Wii party.

Um, even the Wii series is superior than any "first party" content Microsoft can offer. They're in some serious Megalomania.

Absolutely no one can beat Nintendo's first party titles... they have some duds sometimes but they usually have the best quality games out there.

Mr Durkin:Stop taking drugs.
Microsoft 1st Party Games were superior years ago when the 360 started(Kameo,Perfect Dark ect),but now they don"t exist.(Forza at the end of the year)

If you like Kinect crap than MS 1st party support is great(like Nintendo) but if you take a look at core games,it"s also the same situation like Nintendo(mario,Zelda,Metroid).Always the same stuff(Fable,Halo,Forza).

sony and nintendo do the same thing... recently sony claimed there was high demand for their first party content and they both claimed recently that people are drawn to their platforms by the unique content they offer... lol its funny that people get riled up by this pr crtap

bonkers555 (on 18 July 2011)

Better then Sony yes but not even close to Nintendo.

  • -2
Chrizum (on 18 July 2011)

This is about sales and sales only, so there's absolutely no need to compare this to any of your favorite PS3 franchises, people. Sales-wise, Microsoft may or may not beat Sony but definitely not Nintendo, so this guy is an idiot for claiming this nonsense.

If you think the 360's fall lineup is devoid of big titles, you should check out Wii's - nothing that comes anywhere near GoW3 or Forza.
