VGChartz Gap Charts, June 2011 Update - News
by Miles Taven , posted on 15 July 2011 / 5,751 ViewsHere we have three charts representative of the three main regions tracked by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together. The line on each graph represents the gap in the install base (sales through to consumers), and the title indicates which console is in the lead in the particular region covered. Also included is a HD Vs. Wii Global Chart.
Americas:
Lead: 12,083,826 - Xbox 360
X360 finally extended the gap to beyond 12 million units this month with a 100,000 unit lead. Depending on when - or even if - Microsoft and Sony cut price, and by how much, the gap could extend to beyond 14 million this year.
EMEAA:
Lead: 3,553,507 - PlayStation 3
PS3 continues to do well in EMEAA despite being in the thick of summer; the gap extended by nearly 100,000 this month. Much like Americas, depending on price cuts, PS3 could easily extend the lead beyond 5 million by the end of the year.
Japan:
Lead: 5,236,312 - PlayStation 3
75,000 gain for PS3 this month in Japan, smaller but similar to EMEAA right now. PS3 is the dominant home console in Japan and although sales aren't on fire, they're relatively good. It'll be interesting to see if Sony cut the price of the PS3 on their hometurf this holiday, if so they could squeeze out another 750k lead over X360 and extend the lead to 6 milllion by years end.
Global:
Lead: 3,294,007 - Xbox 360
The global gap drops 75,000 this month. Small gains, but they add up, chipping away at that X360 lead. July should be the last month to see a small boost for PS3 with possible price cuts in August for both consoles, possibly rocking the boat either way.
Wii Vs. HD:
Lead: 18,269,183 - High Definition
A full month of the Wii Price cut did little to damage the HD consoles combined, as they extended the lead around 350,000. The end of the year could see the HD gap pass the 25 million unit mark.

On the topic of new charts, these will be X360 Vs. Wii in Americas, and PS3 Vs. Wii in EMEAA. I'll try to give the article a refresh, and retire the Wii Vs. HD chart, as I think that's served its purpose. I'll also be debuting PS Vita Vs. 3DS charts when the Vita releases.
I totally agree.
DON'T retire Wii vs. HD: it's so amusing! (Actually reactions to it are :-D)
Well done Seece! Short, simple, accurate. I like the direction you are taking this chart. In 360 vs. Wii for Americas and PS3 vs. Wii in EMEAA you should include PS2 figures. Not sure about EMEAA region, but 360 has an outside chance at toping PS2 in Americas.
You should write some of the editorials on this website, lol.
Seece : +1
SD vs HD doesn't seem interesting anymore as 360 and PS3 could even reach 75-80% each of the Wii base, this battle is finished IMO.
I am really looking forward to August Price cut for PS3 and XBOX 360. I do wander if SONY is going to give us $199 PS3 and if that is the case what will be Microsoft's response? XBOX 360 at $149 or will they go further down maybe $129. I just don't see them dropping it to $99 this would erase almost all if not all of their profits. This is good for SONY because Microsoft would loose price advantage if that happened. There would be only $50 - $70 price difference between base PS3 and XBOX 360 units.
I like the Wii Vs. HD chart. HD is really the only way to go.
I think the wii just sucks :D
lol truth be thumbed down
