Top Ten Most Outrageous Moments In E3 History - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 25 May 2011 / 19,071 Views

The Electronic Entertainment Expo --better known as simply "E3"-- is a wonderful thing, isn't it? The annual event is known by millions upon millions of gamers as gaming's most important event. It's where the likes of Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, and other publishers get to show off what they've been up to.

Over the past few years, E3 has seen its fair share of bad moments; sometimes electronics aren't working or maybe a presenter isn't able to make it to the event on time. Sometimes the guys backstage forget to plug something in. But then there are the outrageous moments; moments that either make you fall off your chair in laughter, or shake your head in disgust as you prepare the facepalm. These moments are what I will be listing, in no particular order, with videos included showing these outrageous moments where possible. Enjoy.

One Million Troops!!! - Konami at E3 2010

People who attended Konami's press conference during E3 of last year left with only one thing stuck in their heads: "ONE MILLION TROOPS!!" Tak Fujii tried to get the crowd going by following his line with "WOW, ONE MILLION TROOPS!!" Not only did this make things between him and the audience extremely awkward, but the fact that it was so hard to understand what he was saying half the time only made things worse. The video can be found below.

Well BAM! There it is... - Microsoft Showing "Project Natal" at E3 2009

I'm almost certain that any gamer out there who is reading this right now knows about the "Avatar Shoe" glitch. It became so known that the Internet --at the time-- just couldn't get enough of it. Many used certain images of the glitch as profile pictures, heck, some people even created accounts on Internet forums called "Avatar Shoe." I shan't hold you any longer, take a look at the video of it below.

I don't think you have the physical presence to be on stage - Activision's E3 2007 Conference

Activision's press conference at E3 2007 was not remembered by for the games that were announced, but for the host there. Jamie Kennedy, a comedian, was acting rather strange. Well, I suppose a better description would be something along the lines of either "completely high" or "dead drunk." Just like his inability to figure out what he was doing during the first few seconds of the video, I don't have any words for this. Just watch the video below.

It looks like we're having a little interference here - Nintendo's E3 2010 Conference

What's one of the worst things that could happen during a demonstration for a game when you're trying to show off just how responsive the controls are? Well, it's obvious what happens here. While trying to demonstrate The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Shigeru Miyamoto encounters a few problems while trying to navigate his way through the game. But hold on, how is this outrageous? Well, Mr. Miyamoto encounters problems during the whole demonstration of the game, that's how.

...Backstage you told me you were a 5'9" - Ubisoft Showing Off Your Shape: Fitness Evolved at E3 2010

During Ubisoft's press conference at E3 2010, Felicia Williams --International Brand Manager for Ubisoft-- demonstrated Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, an Xbox 360 exclusive title for the Kinect. During said demonstration, the game measured her as a 5'6". However, during Microsoft's conference she once again demonstrated the game, this time Fitness Evolved measured her as 5'8".

Gotta Love It - Epic Games & Chair Entertainment at Microsoft's Press Conference Showing Shadow Complex

Live demonstrations can be awesome to watch. What some people don't understand is how nervous the person behind the controller is as he/she rightfully knows that at any second something might go wrong; they might accidentally get killed in-game thus ending the demo, or maybe reveal part of the game they weren't supposed to.

But at other times, all it takes is a simple glitch to bring the party crashing down.

I'm Alright! I Didn't Hurt My Wrist! - Nintendo's 2008 E3 Conference

I.. well, I mean, they tried, right? You gotta give them some credi-- no, I won't bother trying to downplay it. Have your facepalms at the ready.

Hey Man, Good Game, High-Five Me Bro... Just Stretchin' My Arms - Rock Band & Pepsi Event

It's bad enough to be "left hanging" after trying to give someone a high-five, but having it happen on-stage while performing with multiple cameras aimed right at you is just something else.

So I Heard They Were Having a Sale on Ponchos... - Microsoft's Special Kinect Event, E3 2010

Where to begin with this? Microsoft decided to hold a special event the night before E3 2010 officially began at a place called the Galen Center. The event was heavy on the performance of "Cirque du Soleil." It all sounds... interesting, but what about the Kinect gameplay, I hear you asking? Ha! If that was the case what on Earth is this doing on the list, silly billy?

This special event was super-duper secret, so no picture-taking or video-recording were allowed -- like that stopped anyone from doing it anyway, especially considering the fact that Microsoft forced everyone attending to wear a poncho which lights up.

I know, I know, your faces probably can't handle any more facepalms, but please, just view the video below. Unfortunately, nobody attending managed to record the whole event, so the below video is just showing what many people called "pre-recorded" footage. Naughty, naughty, Microsoft.

Giant Enemy Crabs, Riiiiiiidge Racer, Real-Time Weapon Change, $599 - Sony's E3 2006 Press Conference

Wow. I forgot about that 'Avatar Shoe' segment. Sony 2006 will remain E3s most embarrassing E3 conference for years to come.

Some of them weren't really "outrageous". I see no point in the failed high five being in this section. Most people there probably didn't even notice it and if they did big deal. I would have maybe laughed for .05 nanoseconds.

@Naruku_Diabolos: What? You're honestly calling Sony arrogant? Compared to Microsoft they're utterly selfless..........

@The_Botman: Crabs never breathe through their skin, as most land-based crabs have specialized gills to absorb the oxygen from the air. The only giant arthropods to have reached massive size were dragonflies and millipedes, among others. Dragonflies grew to the size of an eagle and millipedes grew to 6 feet in length.

On topic: I loved Sony's 2006 conference. It's a classic and it shows the arrogance they have, and still have.

Cirque du Soleil will always be the most memorable one to me. The forums, the jokes, celebrity tweets, the embarrassment, online meltdowns -will always hold a special place in my heart. It was one of the best times I enjoyed on the internet.

Sony's 2006 E3 will always remain a recorded classic.

Well..... ah..... I believe scientist discovered that during prehistoric times insects were able to grow up to several feet due to the abundance of oxygen. So..... ah....... giant enemy crabs sounds ... believable...

In retrospect, had I seen that PS3 ad back when it actually happened, I likely wouldn't have wanted one either. No wonder it took them 5 years to catch up after that atrocity.

Historically speaking the Japanese have always had a tension with the Giant Enemy Crabs. It's no surprise that they had real Japanese battles with them.
