VGChartz Gap Charts, April 2011 Update - News

Here we have three charts representative of the three main regions tracked by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together. The line on each graph represents the gap in the install base (sales through to consumers), and the title indicates which console is in the lead in the particular region covered. Also included is an HD Vs. Wii Global Chart.
Americas:
Lead: 11,900,604 - Xbox 360
X360 continues to widen the gap in Americas. As you can see on the graph, 360 manages most of its gains in the holidays unlike EMEAA and Japan for the PS3 which are more steady. So with a price cut to 360 HW and/or Kinect and a good SW line up, 360 should be able to keep up the tradition despite a PS3 price cut in the region. X360 should take the gap to over 12 mill by end of May, and anywhere from 13-15 mill by the end of 2011.
EMEAA:
Lead: 3,374,768 - PlayStation 3
As you can see from the graph, the PS3 is always gaining a steady lead over the X360. A price cut in Europe/Others this Christmas should see a similar reaction to that of late 2009; if the stars align for the PS3 it should surpass the 5 million mark on the gap chart.
Japan:
Lead: 5,106,375 - PlayStation 3
PS3 sales in Japan are chugging along nicely, not making any significant gains due to the overall low sales there but enough to make an impact for the year.
Global:
Lead: 3,419,481 - Xbox 360
It's hard to guess who will take 2011 at this point. While PS3 sales are ahead so far, we've seen Kinect can make a dent and beat the PS3 over the holidays. In the last 12 months, the sales are practically stalemate, being only slightly in 360's favour.
Wii Vs. HD:
Lead: 17,420,451 - High Definition
The gap has grown a fair bit since last christmas. With Wii in 3rd place it's losing around 600k-800k per month. However, the price has just been cut, so can that make a difference? Or will the likely impending cut to the 360 and possibly PS3 at E3 put it firmly in 3rd place again?

I think PS3 will win overall sales against 360 for 2011, but by less then a million. 360 will likely catch up over the holidays as holiday sales are most impactful in Americas. It really depends on E3 because Microsoft hasn't shown as much software support as Sony has. I feel 360 will become Kinect, and traditional game sales will reduce significantly, which sucks.

PS3 is back up, I have been looking at HW sales on AMAZON and while SONY was 2nd for a while. Now even after Wii price cut, SONY is just rolling ahead of the rest. Sure that does not mean much, but with a $50 price cut, and some AWESOME exclusives revealed at E3, PS3 sales should pick up even more, especially if we see some awesome 3D games. I am really looking forward to RESISTANCE 3 and UNCHARTED 3. I think XBOX 360
If PSN issues affected PS3 HW sales, I think that it would just be for rtemporary, I don't see anyone changing its mind for the 360 because of that. Only the owners of the 2 HDs would buy a multiplatform game on 360 instead of PS3, I'm more waiting PS3 SW sales impact than HW impact.
Yeah Seece, as much as I love this, have you thought about doing seperate Wii vs. graphs, or Wii vs. HD in other areas? (Japan would be cool...) Nevertheless, keep up the good work!
@scapegoatsqueal: You know that Sony won't give out right now, and that even if they were out Sega wouldn't comeback (even more when you see they have safe profits in this model)... if they ever wanted to get back to HW they could enter, Sony entered from scratch and MS did the same. Stop trying to put fault at competition for Sega to never get back.
@kow: I'd consider beefing it up with little digs about how some people shouldn't read only what they wish to read in Christensen's books, just to piss disappointed disruption lusty Malstrolibans off. :-P
@reidlosdog Sony might not be in the next generation, if the PSN lawsuits go through. Even if they don't, Sony might decide it isn't worth going in another gen. This will give SEGA the perfect opportunity to reclaim its place in hardware next gen!
Next console generation will really decide if Sony survives. With the 360 dominating america (HD wise), will Sony every get it's money maker base back? With Nintendo actually make any good games? Will PS3 finally take some good advice and charge to play online? The world may never know.
