Nintendo Stock Down Among Earthquake, 3DS Woes

by VGChartz Staff, posted on 08 April 2011 / 3,303 Views

Due to a national disaster and concerns over sales of the 3DS, Nintendo has seen a 15 percent drop in its stock price since the handheld system's February 26 release.

According to andriasang, the 3DS has been impeded in its sales numbers due to the amount of games that have been delayed, mostly due to the March 11 earthquake that rocked the northern portion of Japan. A report from investment bank Barclays Capital cited in the article states that entertainment spending for the island nation is down across the board since the earthquake struck last month.

The delay of some 3DS titles could partially be to blame for the handheld's lower than expected sales, which was eclipsed in Japan this week by the Sony PSP.

@killan1a Where do you get that the 1st batch has been sold in the us? The best buy where I work got about 140 of them, and in the 2 weeks it has been on sell have only sold about 40 (30 the first day). Similar story with all the other best buys in my district which covers all of Utah, Idaho, and Montana. I think there are plenty of 1st batch 3ds' out there, and will be there for a couple months

last hand held system i owned was the gameboy advanced, the Dual screen thing is pretty bad, but it sells anyways. if you lost your house, you wouldn't be buying a 3DS, you would be hoping to find food, and if your country was hit with a major tragedy like this you would be putting money towards it as well

@Nintendogamer 3 hours ago Oh I was worried because 3DS isn't loved in Japan at all. ********************************************************* Where did you come up with that. They completely sold out of the first 400K in less then 48hrs. Due to the Earthquake in Japan, many gamers aren't even able to purchase the 3DS. Sales will probably drop off for both PSP & 3DS. Once the cleanup is complete the systems will start selling again. 3DS really needs more games from Nintendo themselves. That will move more 3DS'.

@McDaniel-77 No, they have not. Should i list the bestsellers? They don't like FPS and therefore love RPGs, if anything. I can't stand this false conclusions anymore. This f.... article confirms what everyone with a bit intelligence already knew: earthquake and GAU in Japan affected 3DS sales. What's so difficult to understand here. *shake's his head*

Isn't it the japanese who have the most probs with 3D grafix? Now it's 3D visuals... McDaniel-77

@Killiana1a the broken rods that are just being buried arent very dangerous, we have the same things buried here in the USA. plutonium fuel rods have a half life of about 25000 years, there just isnt enough activity for that to be harmful to anyone. im not sure where you would be able to find actual charts on the data, but flying from ny to ca will definitely give a person a higher dose of radiation than being near these spent fuel rods. and also, the radiation that people in the US are likely to get from anything coming from the japan incidents is probably about the same amount as someone would get from eating a banana

@Killiana1a: Nintendo 3DS is manufactured in China

My heart goes out to you Nintendo.

Let's pretend that Sony's stock has not fallen mmh? And it fell of about 17% just like Nintendo...coincidence or obvious reason having an impact on Japanese economy?

Killiana1a (on 09 April 2011)

Stock is down for good reason. The 1st batch of 3DS which were already in stock in the USA before their release and the earthquake/tsunami have been sold. What investors are hedging against are the 2nd and 3rd batches of 3DS and 3DS software because of the nuclear radiation. True or not, if rumors of Japanese consumer products containing even minute levels of radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant surface, then this could hurt the sales of Japanese consumer products including Nintendo, specifically the Nintendo 3DS. Perception is reality regardless of truth, yet the stories I am reading: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/08/world/asia/08japan.html Scare the crap out of me. Consider this in the article, "Broken pieces of fuel rods have been found outside of Reactor No. 2, and are now being covered with bulldozers..." Sleep tight.

Mother Nature can be a bitch, but Nintendo has a compass

BluGamer23 (on 08 April 2011)

hmm seems like the best time to buy on Nintendo stock.. if ever anyone planned to. It will be back up.

SSDNINJA (on 08 April 2011)

Yeah, and those delays were due in large part to the earthquake.

trestres (on 08 April 2011)

I think he meant that the delays could have caused the slower sales, at least that's how I read it.

naznatips (on 08 April 2011)

Er... no, the delay could not even be remotely blamed on "lower than expected sales." No one in the history of video games has delayed a game weeks from release for "lower than expected sales." Every day a game is delayed costs a company a lot of extra money, and multi-week delays like this cost them a fortune in lost money they paid for TV spots and advertising which they had to hold.
