3DS Preorder Numbers Doubled the Wii's Preorders - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 26 March 2011 / 4,020 Views

Nintendo 3DS preorders are nearly twice what the Wii had at this point in the release schedule, according to analyst Colin Sebastian. Amazon UK said that its preorders were twice that of the Wii as well prior to its UK launch yesterday, where it looks to sell 200,000 units over the weekend. The 3DS sold over 375,000 units in the first 48 hours of its Japan release last month.

Nintendo has confirmed the ratio, though actual preorder numbers were not disclosed. Jacob Mazel here at VGChartz reported that the combined preorder numbers for Europe and North America were at 1.2 million.

Customers are obviously lining up at the gate for the 3DS, but it's easy to understand all the interest when you look at the features the 3DS has built in.

"The autostereoscopic graphics in the Nintendo 3DS system have been attracting most of the attention," says Mizuki Kiyoshi of Nintendo's Network Software Development Group. "However, we were in contact with things besides that all through development, such as counting your steps as with a pedometer, or having StreetPass with people, and it's really fun to watch the changes that take place within those day by day. I'd really like everyone to experience those things as well."

The US will get its 3D on tomorrow when the 3DS launches in the states. Are you one of the many who have preordered one for tomorrow?

I got my 3DS today, and I'm happy with it. Graphics are better than the Wii, and the 3D is VERY well done, though it hurts your eyes, so I don't really use it. The only games I got for it are Street Fighter and Pokemon Black. It plays DS games well and Street Fighter is just as you would expect it to be. Just need some more games to come out for it, and the update that lets you browse the internet and download games.

If you're considering getting one, I'd wait a bit longer.

That whole Streetpass thing is so fun, haha, I can't believe I ran into some random people with 3DS's so close after launch. :-P Opening your 3DS and seeing stuff like steps you've walked and other 3DS owners you've met is pretty cool. :-)

Nitendo is no stranger to sell consoles without AAA games at launch. What did Wii have?

it's all about brand-power.

think Apple.

Nope. At $250 I'd rather get literally any other console, and I still have a lot of great games to catch up on with my DS. In all honesty because I rarely play my DS, I will likely not get another hand held again. I would rather play my DS, or install a GBA emulator on my phone and play GBA games I own, but haven't caught up on (mainly Final Fantasy's and RPG's). I generally don't play games on the go so it doesn't make much sense to get a handheld system that costs as much as home hardware.

Hope some good software come out soon, if they make a Smash Bros and Metroid Prime for the DS I may reconsider. Also an Ocarina engine based Zelda might do it too, but I already beat Ocarina. So far Kid Icarus is the only game that excites me, but not to the point of owning a new console I will likely rarely play.

Normally I wait for when new systems come out but I'm getting this now mainly because of the online features coming out later this year have me geeked.

Stupid, probably but I luckily will have money to burn this time of year.

@OmegaRugalv3 .. really is there a need to talk like that?.. you speak as if nintendo wont have their big guns on this system.. the 3D is a great feature its an 'extra'. Id rather it have it than jus pure raw gfx power which really offers nothing much more than what the HD consoles is already offering but on a bigger screen. geez. me me me.

This is going to be the first time in a looong time I preordered a system. But this is going to be my first time acutally being in one. I could've been in the wii's launch, but the pundits at FYE didn't even get any shipments of wiis so I canceled my preorder.

I'll get it when better games come out for it. Just having 3D for the sake of having 3D isn't enough for me. The GAMES are what makes or breaks a system to me. Once either some real AAA third party games come out or some AAA Nintendo games come out ... then they will get my money.

@homer, haven't most of those games already been announced for the 3DS. If you want to wait for those games to be released before buying the system feel free to do so, but to say the system is dead to you just because of the launch line up seems a little disingenuous.

Funny how a system with such a mediocre launch lineup can get such great sales. 3ds is dead to me until they release a zelda for it, a FE, mariokart, a 2d mario, or paper mario. Luckily, all but FE is announced for it. I can't wait for them, but until then...:(
