UPDATE: Rock Band 3 Squier Stratocaster will be a Best Buy Exclusive

*UPDATE*

I questioned John Drake from Harmonix on this and he responded, "For whatever it’s worth, the Best Buy exclusive is not in perpetuity. It’s a launch exclusive in the US only. We expect the Squier to be sold at a variety of retailers soon after."

So good news for anybody that boycotts Best Buy or can't leave the house without a plastic bubble.

Dec. 15, 2010:

The Squier Stratocaster guitar peripheral recently showed up on Best Buy's website for preorders with a price tag of $279.99, getting people geared up for the March 1 release date. Joystiq is now reporting the Fender Squier will be exclusive to Best Buy when it launches next year.

Rock Band 3 Squier Stratocaster

For those not remembering when this real guitar was debuted at E3, it's a full-blown six-string guitar with game functionality built in. You can use it for the Pro Modes in Rock Band 3, but it can also plug into an amp or a computer like most other electric guitars.

I don't know why they didn't have these available for the RB3 launch. It's unfortunate that due to poor sales for RB3, the market for a $300 Squier Strat is likely to be very limited, but I'm guessing this will be an even more limited release product as a one retail chain exclusive. This is pretty much the apex for guitar based rhythm games. Unfortunately, this also means the genre has nowhere left to go but down.
