Toriyama: "I'd Like a Story Where Lightning Ends Up Happy"

by Nicholas Taylor, posted on 04 October 2010 / 2,498 Views

Motomu Toriyama, the director of Final Fantasy XIII, has previously said that he would be interested in making a sequel to Square-Enix's hit game, if sales of the original allowed it. No more word on that project yet, really, however, Toriyama has said in an interview that he wants to make a story where the main character Lightning "ends up happy".

Yoshinori Kitase, the producer, said in the same interview that he wants to produce something that passes along the Fabula Nova Crystallis saga's mythology, saying that he wants to show elements that won't be making it into the upcoming games in the series, Final Fantasy Agito XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

When asked if this would be a Final Fantasy XIII sequel, he said that it all depends on "fan reaction". After that, Toriyama added that at some point, like mentioned in the opening paragraph, he'd like to make a story where Lightning "ends up happy".

They went on to confirm that the Final Fantasy XIII development team was working on its next big game, and that they wanted to add things into the new title that were planned for the scrapped Final Fantasy XIII DLC.

When talking about the dropped DLC, they both said that it would've featured an area called "Seventh Ark", which would have contained "quest-like play with free battles". The reason for the DLC being scrapped is due to differences between PSN and Xbox Live, apparently. Kitase said that next time, they'll make preparations for DLC and online elements from the very start, to prevent this from happening again.

Final Fantasy XIII was released in Japan last December, and in US and Europe this March, to stellar sales and critical reception.

Lightning is not a great character, shes a hormonal mess, and completely unreleastic, and talks too much garbage, never want to see that trash cast agian.

I want a story that doesnt suck

Tridrakious (on 05 October 2010)

I remember when there was one main Final Fantasy release and that story was it. Doing remakes I'm okay with, but XIII had a terrible story to begin with, it doesn't need to keep going. Versus XIII shouldn't be called Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Same with Agito XIII.

Mojo (on 05 October 2010)

I'd like a (recent) Final Fantasy game where I was happy at the end!

Fernicum (on 05 October 2010)

Don't worry. I'll make her happy.

Majin-Tenshinhan (on 05 October 2010)

@NoobSlayer92, thanks, fixed it.

Meowster (on 04 October 2010)

Once they complete Versus XIII, then I will gladly accept a FFXIII-2. I had a great time with that one; my second favorite, aside from VI. Despite what some view as weak characters, it brought in some fan favorites like Fang, Sazh, and Lightning.

NoobSlayer92 (on 04 October 2010)

"they'll make preparations for DLC and online elements from the very start, to prevent this frm happening again." You spelled "from" wrong man. OT: F*ck a sequel. I just want Versus and for you and Wada to resign. I'm gonna write that down in my wish list for Santa.

Yes I would love to see a sequel. Lightning is a great character, it's too bad the game just doesn't have enough exploring, mini-games or side missions. Change the game a bit with the gameplay = Add more freedom to the game. Make it so gamers can explore the beauty of Final Fantasy XIII. Allow people to go back and have more interaction. - Add mini-games to change the pace of things. - Side quests/missions keep people preoccupied so they can enjoy a different side of things. Love to see a sequel. Biggest mistake was making it so straight forward!

deskpro2k3 (on 04 October 2010)

Seriously, Fan reaction? So what happened to the fan reaction on an FFVII remake tell me that S-E? S-E is full of bs

Pk9394 (on 04 October 2010)

Real Translation - Our one button mess worked perfectly sales wise and fanboy are buying it no matter how crap or linear the game is built. We'll milk out another crap game and just add new (FEW) amount (about 10) of fancy looking creature in the game and spam it all over each area with our intelligent use of different colors then hype this shit like its the best RPG ever!. It can't go wrong when our customer dont get tire of looking at the same peanut from chapter 1 to the last chapter.

zzamaro (on 04 October 2010)

Why? ff13 is overrated. Worst ff game.

plasticman13 (on 04 October 2010)

Lmao I thought the title meant "Akira Toriyama" AKA the god of manga and anime. But seriously, give us FFvXIII first Square. Stop working on 50 projects without a promise of releasing them in the foreseeable future.

Teo (on 04 October 2010)

@think-man can't handle realistic dialogue with a hint of cheesiness? Go play CoD, Halo, and God of War in all their glorious one-liners.

AOvechkin08 (on 04 October 2010)

Again Xbox limits final fantasy.. Seriously Square... You fucked up majorly, and ignoring that major fuck up; I wouldn't mind seeing another Final Fantasy XIII game. Though I've pretty much given up on the series since the last gen games. They need to make a great game to get me into it again.

FlowingIce (on 04 October 2010)

There's no such thing true best games,.... And in my personal opinion, XIII is my 2nd fave FF.

think-man (on 04 October 2010)

Please don't make a sqeual!!!!!!!!!!! I can't stand to see any of those characters again and think if I heard hope or snow talk again id prolly kill some1

VXIII (on 04 October 2010)

Just give me Versus ^^

Ultr (on 04 October 2010)

I liked it! I would be happy with a sequel!

Boutros (on 04 October 2010)

MAKE IT!!!

Majin-Tenshinhan (on 04 October 2010)

@Hepheastos, I'm the author, and Dragonball is one of my favourite things of all time. But to be honest, I assumed that nobody would make the mistake that Akira Toriyama would be involved with FF13 in any way when the producer of the game is also called Toriyama. The very first words of the article even say that it is not Akira Toriyama. I think you're overreacting.

Squall1989 (on 04 October 2010)

What's everybodys problem with Final Fantasy 13 ? Of course it does not belong to the best Final Fantasys. But it is not that bad.

Mr.Metralha (on 04 October 2010)

Just focus on FFXV and make it a better game than XIII.

Christian973 (on 04 October 2010)

F*** this game. i just wish they fire you Toriyama!!!!!!

A203D (on 04 October 2010)

rutea7, i hope that the FNC takes up so much of their time, that they are forced to give FF15 to more compitent developers, its the best possible scenerio if they make FF13-2. people who like FF13 get their sequel, while we get a new FF (hopefully).

Hephaestos (on 04 October 2010)

Misleading title.... "Toriyama" = Akira Toriyama, who besides being the author of the most sucessful manga/anime, is also the art design behind games such as the DQ series, Blue dragon or crono trigger.... so pretty important in the gaming world too. Basically it's just as if you said "Miyamoto" to talk about some random sound editor on a game, especially because Tori is not a far fetch for writting a VG story.

Kleeyook (on 04 October 2010)

I hate everyone in the game besides Sazh and Snow. Sequel!!? No thanks! :(

SecondWar (on 04 October 2010)

Other 3rd party developers/publishers seems to manage making DLC for both platforms just fine. pretty lame excuse.

CChaos (on 04 October 2010)

Love it or hate it, think the game is terrible or good, they're going to keep making the things until the customers stop buying. So, expect a lot more games based on or stemming from XIII until people finally decide to stop buying if they don't like the way something is working.

rutea7 (on 04 October 2010)

like A203D said, at least this would keep them busy so they dont touch ff15. give ff15 to someome competent.

RareglovE (on 04 October 2010)

F**k ff13 the most forgettable FF game i have played

aken909 (on 04 October 2010)

The differences between Live and PSN that he is talking about is most likely the fact that anything that developers want to put on Live basically has to have a fee where as developers are allowed to add as many free updates as they want on PSN. Sadly updates are seen by Microsoft as just another way to squeeze more money out of everyone involved.

Lazthelost (on 04 October 2010)

It would be fantastic if Lightning died in the end. She was so forgettable in 13. I literally liked everyone over her. Even disgusting Fang, barf.

Rafux (on 04 October 2010)

I'd like that FFXIII never existed

AngelosL (on 04 October 2010)

i don't want another FFXIII,thank you

Bruno Muņoz (on 04 October 2010)

Toriyama & Kitase = Aonuma

A203D (on 04 October 2010)

Supprises theres so many people who dont want this, imo i dont want another game about Lightning's hormones, but as long as Toriyama and Kitase are working on this it means its less likely FF15 will be theres, which is a great result!!

WarmachineX (on 04 October 2010)

...define "happy"

Bristow9091 (on 04 October 2010)

Lol haters. I really hope they make a sequel, but don't make it all weird like X-2, I mean, I liked X-2, but the whole "Hey look at me, I was a summoner and now I'm a gunslinger in hotpants" was weird, and the dress spheres... why dresses? Why not just change weapons or something? Whatever, I still really hope they make a sequel to XIII, I'd like to see more of the story.

Cunning_Linguist (on 04 October 2010)

no thanks

Aiddon (on 04 October 2010)

Toriyama, we don't want any more stories from you; you're a hamfisted writer at best

Crystalchild (on 04 October 2010)

Final Fantasy XIII-2? Fine with me, if theyre not screwing it up like XIII itself.

880user088 (on 04 October 2010)

spoiler alert : at ending Lightning will be happy...

Carl2291 (on 04 October 2010)

Differences between PSN and Xbox Live? What? Does he mean the memory limit that Xbox Live has? If so... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
