Sony: Xbox 360 is Reliant on Shooters - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 18 September 2010 / 7,588 Views

Earlier this week, Microsoft UK head, Neil Thompson, told CVG that Microsoft was looking into getting more FPS games.

"We'll be looking to have lots of FPS games, ideally exclusive to us [in the future]."

Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing at SCEA, decided to take a jab at Microsoft, saying that their platforms have more variety than the Xbox 360.

"We've never been reliant on one product genre like one of our competitors."

"[Sony has] titles ranging from Killzone to EyePet. PlayStation is a very big tent and ... it's helped us sell 349 million PlayStation hardware products and two billion software products in 15 years," the executive added.

If you look at the top 10 list in Xbox 360 software, the 360 definitely has a lean when it comes to shooters. In fact, the latest major release for the 360 - Halo: Reach - is yet another FPS. If you look further down though, the 360 has succeeded in selling various games in other genres, although not quite up to the standards that it sells shooters.

What do our readers think? Is Peter Dille's comment about the 360 true, or is he just blowing off steam?

microsoft have not impressed me this gen as they haven't been pushing games like sony have in that variety. People mention the money aspect and popularity does that mean people should stop making the last gaurdian. Some people's reactions are quite scary and actually fully explain why some of these games come out as buggy unfinished messes but speaking here in the now both consoles share multi plat games and i see more exclusive games leaving xbox and going multi plat so what are xbox doing to distinguish themselve's? sony has psn plus for folks who like to pay for the online gaming lbp sold remarkebly well and no one has seen a game like that before, kz2 came out of nowhere as a very solid fps shooter resistance has a strong following these things make ps3 a very attractive option regardless of kinect and what about dcu online? who knows how it will do but i hope it does well because it's a refreshing idea for an mmo and not end up like the ambitious and often misunderstood mag (which no serious issues with glitche's i might add).

There is a point to be made with this article, yes the 360 relies on FPS games more than the PS3 - however the best selling games generally are FPS or 3rd Person Shooter games, plus there's such a variety in this one genre. This is why i think Kinect will fall short, people aren't going to use it for their FPS games, plus with it's price you might as well just buy a Wii for the type of games you will play with it. Move can be used on FPS games but it can also be used for the Wii style games too. I have both consoles and i'm not getting either Move or Kinect though, honestly i feel that gamepads are still the best option.

@rf40928
"original Playstation kids are in their 30's now" - WHAT? i'm still in my early 20s and I owned an original Playstation...

@JPH85
"catch up your competitors" - Check the annual summary, in 2009 the PS3 sold more units than the 360, and in 2010 so far the PS3 has sold more units. Also if you look at the sales month on month since launch - had the PS3 been released at the same time as the 360 it would be about 8-12 weeks ahead in total units sold.
"They were FF, GT, GTA, and Crash Bandicot" - you do realise that's 4 completely different stlye of games there.
Current Top 5 PS3 games sold (according to VGChartz) - COD:MW2, GTA4, COD4:MW, MGS4, FF13.
Current Top 5 360 games sold (according to VGChartz) - COD:MW2, HALO3, COD4:MW, GTA4, COD:WAW.

Go, go Captain Obvious. Though you should be careful of your idiotic statements, especially when PS3's best selling game is a shooter and when 4 out of its top 10 best-selling games are shooters.

Well truth is Sony needs to be more reliant on FPS's.. There's a reason PS3's Best Selling game is COD MW2, a FPS, which sold even more on the 360.. The original Playstation kids are in their 30's now and yeah some of them play FPS but It's the young kids now who are addicted to first person shooters, the adrenalin rush is addictive, the game pace can be crazy. MS has done it homework which is why both Sony and MS's best sellers are FPS. Kids don't ask mom and dad to buy CD's anymore but games. Sony can say whatever they want but they are hoping to have better exclusive FPS's of their own in the future and that's a fact. I think understanding what sells best is the key. If you know what genre is wanted you then write a good story for a game etc .. Does it matter what sells best if that's what people want? That's why it sells best ..

  • 0
JPH85 (on 20 September 2010)

Taking jabs at other companies isn't gonna make you catch up your competitors. VGChartz had the top 15 PS games sold: They were FF, GT, GTA, and Crash Bandicot (whoever you write it). So that's not much of variety too. Now with Kinect, it targets Families and Young teen generation. Shooters for hardcore. There are racing, RPGs, action adventure, and much more. Actually there are more 360 games than PS3.

@oniyide

Your right about the pc, but you're talking to someone who was playing unreal tournament online in the 90's on a PC , yeah they did it first but we're talking who did it first on a console. And as cool as it was on a PC back then, they never had it as good as Xbox live until of course around the time xbox live came out, then you began to see a couple decent programs for gamers to talk on headphones while gaming on PC and I did this alot around the time SW Galaxies hit its peak in 2003'ish.

The truth is Halo is a title that doesn't define the Xbox, but it's a game that can sell a console and that's what Sony is lacking that I felt they could do with the PS2 ( of course they had a perfect storm then, like a 1.5 year headstart on everyone). Look at the facts and not the rhetoric. Take away Halo and look at multi-platform games on both consoles and of those games more copies are sold on the xbox. The xbox has about 150'ish more titles, has sold over a hundred million more games ( this generation ).. And has alot of games I love like Fable and NHL.. I can tell you the #15 best selling game on the xbox probably outsold the #10 best seller on the PS3, but some Sony guy is going to say anything to take your mind off the real facts: Sony in third place in console sales, and even worse yet: In a distant 3rd place in software sales -having sold around 120 million less games worldwide then XB 360... Honestly, no matter what genre: FPS, Mmorpg, etc... Every console needs a game or two that can cause ppl to go buy a console because of that game! ( Like Halo has done ) After that people will buy other games because they own the console! Does Sony have one exclusive that has sold as many games as 360's first or even 2nd best selling exclusive? Nope not even close... Sony shutup and sell one game that makes me say 'Ok time to buy a PS3'.. Final Fantasy used to do this, but theyve lost something in the story.

@rf40928 you make a lot of sense but PC was doing that b4 Xbox, and DC has an online component, I will give MS all the credit for mainstreaming it. Kudos But some gamers arent into online like that so that whole LIVE argument is moot to some people

The X360 doesn't have shooters only but it's what the consumers choose to buy. Microsoft doesn't decide what will be popular or not, the buyers do.

  • 0
fastyxx (on 19 September 2010)

It's not shooters on the platform. It's the online services. Online online online. PSN doesn't match up. Getting in and out of groups in Reach, for example, is amazingly easy and awesome. It does everything to encourage you to play with friends other than MAKE some for you.

  • 0
FullMetalMerc (on 19 September 2010)

Its true but that doesnt mean its not good for business. Even thought most multiplat games that arent shooters do sell better on the PS3

  • 0

Hmmmm i wonder what recent 360 games that recently came out that made Sony want to say this :-)

  • 0
BenVTrigger (on 19 September 2010)

And why would that be a problem? Shooters are awesome so I don't really see why Sony would think that makes the competitor sound poor. Basically they are saying "our competitor sells the most copies of the biggest Genre in all of gaming and makes TONS of money from it!"

I mean really?

"Sony are correct, because shooters are leading the way for online gameplay. thats why the Xbox 360 is outselling the PS3. and thats why Sony are complaining because they have never been good at producing first person shooters.. the ones thay have tried (Killzone, HAZE, Resistance) have all failed to reach numbers set by Call or Duty, Gears of War and Halo! ... all of those games achieved 5 million plus sales.... Sony simply don't understand what gamers want in regards to shooters. Sony have forget why they are struggling and why they will never get back to leading this industry, because the success of the Playstation was built on Sony paying for WWF SMACKDOWN, METAL GEAR, EA SPORTS and GTA, all these games were only available on the PLaystation, you couldn't play them on Nintendo 64 or Dreamcast."

You're absolutely correct, Sony is too busy still trying to please their Japanese buyers, more then half of all PS3's bought were in America or EMEAA, and most of those in America. they need to get it together and make titles that Europeans and Americans find unresistable. I loved the PS2, but that was before MS revolutionized game play. MS made it best and most practical FIRST. Anyone who played Halo 2 in the original Xbox remembers the cool feeling of playing over high speed internet, wearing headsets, calling out positions -- When they were doing no such thing on any other console in that sense of being 'usable and viable' compared to anyone else. Even now Xbox Live is leaps ahead of anyone else, I dont think they get it.. even Nintendo's system.. They have a friends list and I cant even chat with friends in games we might be playing together ?

"Yeah, PS3 does have more variety of games. We have the less popular version of those games I mention..."

More SONY rethoric.. you can't beleive PS3 has more variety really, in fact PS3 has about 150 less game titles then the Xbox 360 does (PS3 492 game titles v/s Xbox 360 646 game titles!).

Its just that companies are going to look at the top 10 sellers and see what those are and say those are in fact [insert genre here]

Yes because Fable and Forza DO NOT exist and the PS3's top 3 are NOT MW2, GTA4, and COD4.

  • 0
Kleeyook (on 19 September 2010)

For 360 vs PS3:
FPS - Halo 3, ODST, Reach vs Killzone 2, MAG, R, R2
TPS - Gears vs SOCOM, Warhawk
Stealth shooter - Splinter Cell 5 vs MGS4
Shmup - Geometry Wars vs Super Stardust HD
Bullet hell shooter - Deathsmiles, Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun vs GunDemonium Collection, Sölder
On-rail shooter - Gal Gun vs Time Crisis

Yeah, PS3 does have more variety of games. We have the less popular version of those games I mention. Although MGS4 is the best game for 2008 , better than Splinter Cell and still is PS3's exclusive. And Gal Gun will never come to the state. :P

Hyruken (on 19 September 2010)

I like the way they talk about what they did 15 years ago.

The harsh reality for Sony is they don't have a signature game like Nintendo have Mario, Sega have Sonic and Microsoft have Master Chief. These three characters instantly make you think of the platform they are on. Sony talk about software and how many they sold over the years but again the harsh fact is that was years ago. The games that were once exclusive to them have now moved on. GTA gone, Tomb Raider gone, Tekken gone, Final Fantasy gone, Dragon Quest gone, Kingdom Hearts gone, Resident Evil gone etc etc the list is very very long and get's updated constantly i.e Metal Gear Solid being the latest one.

Of the remaining franchises Sony have only 1 has the potential to reach 10m sales and that is Gran Turismo. However i don't think GT5 will get anywhere near that mark.

If we fast forward to the now and look at the biggest selling PS3 games we see 5 of the top 6 selling PS3 games are gun games.

Which makes this statement just that little bit more funny.

.. the only game Sony cleaned up on is Gran Turismo which sold up to 15 million copies being there biggest release.. but GT5p on the PS3 failed to reach 5 million!.
the problem isn't with the PS3 for Sony, its the games!...what made Sony great is now available to buy on other consoles. thats the truth!..
even now the best games on the PS3 are GTA4 and Call of Duty, two titles which you can buy on the Xbox 360, top that off with Mass Effect, Halo, Gear of War, Forza Racing and all those Jap RPGs, and you' ve pretty much got a reason not to buy a PS3 if all you want if great online shooters and RPGs.

Lesson from Sony:

When you are dead last in the current generation, end your gutter snipes with dragging up your track record just like a bad employee always argues "Well I have worked here for x years...I am right."

  • 0
TheFlyingDutchman (on 19 September 2010)

Great minds think alike Peter!
Just look at the top10's of both consoles.
Shooters dominate the 360's top10 with 7/10 (with Halo: Reach and COD: Black Ops on the way to kick AC and GHIII out), while the PS3's top10 with 4/10 (with LBP and Uncharted2 kicking a shooter (resistance2 - +60k) out within a few weeks.
Sony has more variety, Microsoft is going with shooters all the way.
Nothing new.
But very funny to see all the comments of the "boys" defending Microsoft.
I can only encourage Microsoft to keep this shootertrain on track and keep making shooters, shooters and shooters untill people are sick and tired of shooters and want something else.
Luckily Kinect is coming, so party-games will come up and claim the second place.
Shooters and partygames ... wooptidoo!

That is right. X360 is targeted for USA and shooters are most popuar in USA. Someday they will grow up and start playing more versatile genres. Sony has exclusives that don't sell as well as Halo, but deliver unique experience. That is obvious. And I don't care about the sales as long as I can play my single copy.

@ jezze_james

No, nothing any one man at Sony says is going to slow Halo's sales. The statement was most likely made because Dille is frustrated that the PS3 has been going after a broader spectrum of unique titles, yet 360 still sees the highest software sales with mostly FPS. I don't see it as jealousy as much as I see it as frustration. Sony used to be on top, and now they're not. America's fascination with FPS is one of the main reasons why. Well, that and Sony launched a system at $600.

  • 0
jezze_jamez (on 19 September 2010)

@ rakugakist

Exactly...that's why i put no fanboyism. It seems you cant make an honest statement against a system without being a fanboy. Even though i made a statement against PS3 (which i own) for Xbox (which i never owned). I call it as i see it. I just don't see the point of Sony trying to point those facts out? Is is jealousy?...is it trying to slow down Halo sales ?

  • 0
kain_kusanagi (on 19 September 2010)

This year I bought Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, and Halo Reach. Before the year is over I will be buying Bioshock 2, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom. Right now I don't plan on getting COD Black Ops or Medal of Honor. But that's just this year. The Xbox 360 library has racings sims, arcade racers, JRGPs, WRPGs, and all the rest of the big and small genres.

The Xbox 360 may have more shooters than PS3, but it still has top quality games of many genres. Sure some are multiplatform, but that doesn't matter. FPS games are the most popular genre so it's only smart for MS to make sure the shooter audience will want to make the Xbox 360 their home. Just about every popular genre has representative titles on the Xbox 360. That's why it has sold so well and will continue to sell well.

  • 0
riecsou (on 19 September 2010)

what is he saying? I am a PS3 fan but that sounds more like complaining. If shooters are selling well then, I think its clever for microsoft to take advantage of that. Just like Nintendo was killing the HD consoles with the family games and motion sensor, now both PS3 and Xbox360 are implementing motion sensor and family game.

  • 0
Michael-5 (on 19 September 2010)

Well if you look at the top 15 or 20 exclusive games you will actualy see Microsoft has more variety. There is pgr, forza, mass effect, fable, halo wars, etc etc. Ps3's exclusive library is half shooter, and half action adveture. The only game not of these two genres that's reasonably successful is gran turismo 5 prologue, sinc lbp is technically a platformer that too.

Shooters are just what popular this generation on HD consoles. Don't hate Microsoft because they focus largly on shooters. If you don't like shooters get a wii because both the 360 and ps3 are heavily shooter based, with ps3 also having a large focus on action/adventure games an Microsoft having a focus on racing games and RPGs.

As Billy mentioned there is; Prey, Perfect Dark Zero, Bulletwitch, Call of Duty 2, & Metro 2033. However there more games such as; Call to Juarez ( Not Bound in Blood), Chromehounds, Crackdown 1 & 2 (Considered an open world TPS), Darkest Days, Deathsmiles, Dreamkiller, & I'm just going to stop there.

By the way those are all on the 360 or 360/PC only. You guys are just naming all the TOP games because I know there are some for the PS3 no one mentioned such as Haze for instance.

  • 0
jezze_jamez (on 19 September 2010)

Wow i used to be mad at Sony, now i'm just sad for them. First off...who cares? Instead of trying to point out what drives a systems sales....try and do that for yourself! In the begining it was " 360 sales are ahead of us because it was released 1 year before us" meanwhile so was the Wii. That was years ago Sony. If your system is as perfect as you claim...it would have caught up by now. Then they make fun of the Wii....then decide to copy it. Your games take forever to make, you take functions out of your system ( BC, OS). Don't worry what everyone else is doing, just do what you did with PS2...a killer system with killer games. You make God of war....WITHOUT DLC? Give your head a shake Sony, but it's too late now. Your gonna finish a distant 3rd. BTW...i own a PS3 and a Wii (no fanboyism)

Here are Sony first party only titles that don't just fit into the shooter category.. Twisted Metal(upcoming,) GT5, LBP, Infamous, Demon's Souls, Dark Kingdom, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, Last Guardian(upcoming,) Modnation Racers, Siren Blood Curse, and Wipeout.

So aside from third person shooters and first person shooters they've got racing, platforming, open world, adventure/rpg, hack and slash, stylish action, horror, and racing.

Aside from third person shooters and first person shooters Microsoft has open world, adventure rpg, and racing.

There might be other types I missed, such as Buzz or other crap that Sony has, but overall Sony has a much larger variety of games to choose from. It's better to have a good first party line up as well since usually the first party games are much better than your average title.

Really, hatmoza? Why does the PS3 have more exclusive shooters than the 360 then?

Sony:
Resistance
Resistance 2
Resistance 3
SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation
SOCOM 4
Killzone 2
Killzone 3
Warhawk
MAG

Microsoft:
Halo 3
Halo 3 ODST
Halo Reach
Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2

That's Sony 9, Microsoft 8 if you're keeping score at home, or you can cut Microsoft down to 5 if you wanna exclude the "console exclusives." So yeah, this statement is rather ironic because Sony have more shooters on their console than Microsoft does.

Shooters are bigger on 360 period. But as far as exclusives goes PS3 has quite a lot of shooters too. In fact, more FPS on PS3 thats exclusive. Halo just happens to be better than KZ and Resistance.

@NoirSun

Best exclusive RPG my ass, ecer heard of a PC? Me2 comin to ps3 anyway, and Bioware numbers gathered only show that 50% of Xbox owners have even beaten the game...

NoirSon (on 19 September 2010)

Duh, so was the Xbox.

Nevertheless, they so sell so it don't really matter. Heck, technically the 360 has had the best exclusive RPGs of this console generation.

Indeed, the 360 is reliant on shooters, because that's all consumers want nowadays.

I guess the big winners are Americans, they've been buying them for years and their thirst for this crap is infinite.

Well, I've reached the saturation level a long time ago.

Enough with shooters.

i agree with the comments below for the most part, but you are forgetting games such as LBP, LBP2 (UPCOMING) GOW3, GT5 PROLOGUE, GT5 (UPCOMING.. cant wait) HEAVY RAIN..... even if there are alot of shooters on PS3, which i cant deny, you have to admit that xbox360 has less diversity.

Direct attack at Halo Reach. raises shield I also kind of agree with Peter.

are you really trying to differentiate socom from other shooters XD. Anyway.... top 10 360 has 8 shooters ps3 has 6.Top 20 360 has 10 shooters while ps3 has 11. Top 30 360 has 15, ps3 has 15. Both are just as reliant as shooting games. Shooting games are games where your main weapon is a gun. Notice they didn't say fps, they said shooting. Now lets even do an fps comparison. Top 10 360 has 5, ps3 has 4. Top 20 360 has 5, ps3 has 5. Top 30 360 has 9. PS3 has 7. For games that have sold over 1million, the 360 has far more non shooters then the ps3. Maybe there was a typo and they meant to apologize to their non shooting fans for pulling an xbox this gen.

I have games that range from Halo to VIva Pinata on the 360. The "Xbox only has shooters" label is about as accurate as the "PS3 has no games" label---which is to say, not accurate at all.

Well what pisses me off is that Sony's response to Xbox's shooter heavy sales pattern was to do what? Get into the shooter game. Now there's a shitload of shooters on my chosen console and fewer really high quality games in the other core genres that I much prefer. I just groan every time another frickin' shooter is announced for PS3 (exclusive or multi who cares) as if it's some amazing new ground breaking new thing.

Xbox defined itself on its own terms, and Playstation lost its identity a bit trying to respond to Xbox's shooter lineup.

Peter Dille is being a bit of a dill-hole.

Uncharted is also a platformer/TPS and socom is a tactical TPS, might as well call MGS4 a FPS too

I also find it amusing that they make sure to mention Playstation as an entire brand, not specifically what the PS3 has been selling. The PS2 was revolutionary. The PS3...it's good, but it's just not to the same level. The guy kind of comes off as more than a little cynical.

ironically ps3 has more shooters. correct me if im wrong

I think both Sony and Microsoft are catering almost exclusively to the shooter Genre. As Arcane_Chaos pointed out look at the amount of shooters on the PS3. The only difference is that shooters sell better on the 360, maybe because it has a larger user base ...duh...

Nintendo is the only publisher not catering to a single genre, though I would say Platformers are pretty close to being Nintendo's genre of choice. No competitor relies equally on all genre's regardless they are going to focus on the genre's fans prefer. For Microsoft and Sony that is shooters, for Nintendo it is platformers, racers, fighters...etc...etc...

Either way Sony is pretty much shooting themselves in the foot as they have more exclusive FPS on their console then Microsoft does.

MW2, COD4, KZ2, R1, R2 that's for the fps
then... 3rd person games that basically are shooters with a story (and online shooting multiplayer) GTA4, MGS4, U2

yeah no PS is really just eyepet and LBP....
