At the beggining of the developing of Super Mario Galaxy 2, the character's creator Shigeru Miyamoto says that the game was named Super Mario Galaxy 1.5 internally to keep the pressure lower. But as the game was growing with new and interesting level designs and ways to play. New power-ups and over 90 percent of of the level design being brand new, the game became Super Mario Galaxy 2.
The original plan was to make the game in one year, similar to their development time target for Majora's Mask. However, they ended up taking two-and-a-half years. Not having to use a year to refine player movements allowed the team to create new stages and tune
Iwata/Miyamoto noticed that they hadn’t fully taken advantage of the spheres, believed new tricks/gimmicks could make something more interesting, even if an original stage formation was used
Hint TVs allow things to be explained, but hardcore gamers can skip over them, Acording to Miyamoto Super Mario Galaxy 2 is more difficult than the first, he even slam his table when playing alone late at night.
