With NPD set to release their monthly data for February 2010 on Thursday, we present a summary of VGChartz data for the same period for as a preview and for comparison.

Monthly Highlights:
- Hardware revenue dropped 23% year over year on lower pricing and lighter volume.
- Eighteen games sold over 100,000 units.
- All hardware, save for PS3 and X360 decreased year over year. Total hardware sales dropped 17%.
- Software volume increased slightly from February 2009, but revenue remained flat on lower pricing.
- Bioshock 2 sold nearly 800,000 units across X360 and PS3, with sales heavily in favor of X360 as  expected.
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold 5,000,000 in the USA. The game has penetrated nearly 20% of the US Wii base in little more than three months.

Hardware sales were down for February, but still strong. Nintendo sold over half the hardware for the month.

Console              Feb-10      Jan-10
      M/M             Feb-09            Y/Y
Wii 518,836 614,420 -16% 736,386 -30%
DS 463,782 545,780 -15% 511,923 -9%
X360 352,421 310,640 13% 346,267 2%
PS3 286,260 317,205 -10% 241,046 19%
PSP 102,158 153,528 -33% 187,388 -45%
PS2 50,120 78,273 -36% 110,668 -55%
Total 1,773,577 2,019,846 -12% 2,133,678 -17%

For the month, Wii, PS2, DS, and PSP dropped year over year. That should continue for a few months. Starting in April 2009 though, Wii sales softened, and so Wii should return to year over year growth mid year on its strong lineup of games. PSP and DS could probably return to positive growth against 2009 with price drops in the Spring as well.

With hardware sales now essentially driven by four platforms in the USA, Wii, DS, X360 and PS3 were the only systems to see games chart in the top thirty for February. Total software sales for February were up by nearly a million units from February 2009. March 2010 should be an even stronger month for software with titles like God of War 3 and Final Fantasy XIII.

MAG was not a complete flop, it was a brand new series with only online...it will prob get 1.1-1.3 million sales lifetime...I am sure that a 2nd one would reach 2 million.

That chart is confusing, which side is this year.

"It has excuses, but what would it take for you to say Wii had a bad month?" The Wii is still selling close to what the other two consoles sell combined and it takes up three of the Top 5 selling software titles. If that's a bad month then when do you call every month for every other console since launch? For me, a bad Wii month would at least be one where one of the other current gen consoles beats it in sales. A reduction from "mercilessly ravaging competition with no mercy, compassion or lubrication" to "mercilessly raving the competition with no compassion but KY" isn't a bad month imo.

Wii is d00med. Seriously though, pretty good overall, except PSP. Then again, what else is new... it's really on its last legs.

Salnax (on 10 March 2010)

I doubt one can call it a bad month for the Wii when it is the #1 selling system.

SaviorX (on 10 March 2010)

Numbers come with a little asterisk though - PS3 and Wii suffered from shortages all month.

Demotruk (on 10 March 2010)

^ It's down 30% YoY. It has excuses, but what would it take for you to say Wii had a bad month?

"360 is so amazing at selling software that its bioshock 2 sales had to be split!!! " lol

Gilgamesh (on 10 March 2010)

I remember a time when the PS3 was lucky to have 1 game in that list, not no more, 7 games!
