Miyamoto Talks About NSMBW, Zelda Wii, and Mario Galaxy 2

New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and The Legend of Zelda are the biggest announced games that Nintendo is planning to release on Wii, and in a new interview with Nintendo Power, Miyamoto shared some new information on those games.  Here's a snippet from Aeuropause's "Read-a-Long" article on the subject:

If you’re wondering how New Super Mario Bros. Wii will handle multiplayer deaths, you can rest assured knowing it will be as punishment-free as possible. As long as another player is still alive, a dead player will simply re-appear right where he or she died.

The game will also feature the return of the Koopa Kids (”We’re still working on it!” Miyamoto promises, as if there’s some sort of complex contract negotiation to work out with Wendy O. Koopa.) Plus, NSMBW will debut the long-rumored “Kind Code” feature that will let the game play for you if you get to spot that you can’t complete. I’m sure I’m in the minority on this one, but I will totally turn on Kind Code - or Demo Play or whatever the final name is - and watch the game play itself start to finish. I like watching games, what can I say.

When asked about the playable characters being Mario, Luigi, Toad and Another Toad, Shigeru Miyamoto says “That’s it.” I still maintain that they’re holding back Peach as a secret character. Either she’s in from the start or you unlock her after beating the game once. The game has such a Super Mario Bros. 2 vibe that I can’t imagine Nintendo ignoring the obvious and not completing the SMB2 quartet.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is intended to be more difficult than the first, which means I should probably just bail out now. Miyamoto says not to expect any new suits (instead: Yoshi and new abilities for Yoshi), that the game will feature all new galaxies (why would you assume they would repeat, because Wii Fit Plus repeats?), and that there will be a time slowdown effect. Miyamoto doesn’t say if this is an in-game effect, or if this is another take on Kind Code to make the game easier to play.

Oh, and about that new Legend of Zelda for Wii? Great quote from the master: “I don’t think it’s going to be that radically different.” Have fun with that one, gang.

@Kenryo maybe it is different, but people are speculating way to far off of the one image he showed. People are now asking for steampunk Zelda. Sure it is different, but that is radically different. Maybe we should be thinking more along the lines of Majoras Mask, as that was different, but stayed in the Zelda Universe.

"When asked about the playable characters being Mario, Luigi, Toad and Another Toad, Shigeru Miyamoto says “That’s it.” lame

Kenryoku_Maxis (on 05 July 2009)

Wait a second. First he says he's going to have the next Zelda be something different from the Ocarina/Twilight Princess formula, and now he's saying “I don’t think it’s going to be that radically different.” Which is it Miyamoto? Or is this just diffusion to set us up for a 'wow' factor?

Spidey-RJ (on 04 July 2009)

"I don’t think it’s going to be that radically different.” Ok, no Zelda game has ever let me down. I loved TP, by the way. If Zelda Wii is good old Zelda, that's just fine!!!

New Super Mario Brothers Wii was already a must buy for me, but adding in the Koopa Kids is a huge plus. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is also a must buy. When it comes to 3D Marios the suits are not that big of deal for me. However, Yoshi's being added is a huge thing to me. New Zelda Well, I do love Zelda games, but they have never been a must buy. However, all the time they have been spending on this one has really got my hopes up.

NightDragon83 says: Aside from 1 or 2 purple coin challenges, Mario Galaxy was a joke in terms of difficulty, so I don't know why this guy had such a hard time... must be an epic n00b to the world of video games. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Agreed beat the game twice once with Mario and the other with Luigi. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As much as I'm looking forward to NSMB Wii, I'm afraid that it's going to be too easy and straight forward again. I was hoping for a more dynamic overworld with tons of different pathways and secrets like Mario 3 or Mario World. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well there's always hope but thank god the Koopa kids will be back I was wondering where they were all this time :P

Jumpin (on 02 July 2009)

I didn't say make it like Mario. I said make it like Zelda, instead of a thousand other games already out there.

TX109 (on 02 July 2009)

@ Jumpin just because the zelda game's stories arent as simplistic as mario stories doesnt mean that the series is in decline. I dont think people would like it if the story was exactly like mario. you know, like there is no story.

I wouldn't expect anything to be radically different from it... I expect the same "go through dungeon, find (insert item here), rinse and repeat" gameplay.

gvangoeverden (on 02 July 2009)

o wow zelda has been in development for like a bazillion years and miyamoto says I don’t think it’s going to be that radically different. awesome so it will definatly be worth the wait, lol

angrypoolman (on 02 July 2009)

you gotta have the super mario bros 2 quartet! two toads? come on!

Jumpin (on 02 July 2009)

Mario Games - I like the NES ones better than the newer ones; but with Galaxy the 3D ones are starting to catch up. Mario Brothers 3 is still awesome; I think the reason it keeps me coming back is the challenge. When I can just walk right through Mario World, I don't really feel the same satisfaction I get from accomplishing a playthrough of Mario 3. The forest level and Star Road levels in Mario World are awesome, but the rest of the game I find kind of lacking in terms of interesting locations. Mario 64 I found kind of bland, Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy I found to be improvements going forward (though I need to play more Mario Sunshine, I didn't have a cube so it is kind of difficult). Zelda - I like the 3D ones better, but STOP trying to make the series so incredibly serious; we already get enough of that crap from dozens of other publishers. Make a FUN, light hearted, Zelda RPG already. I find the series is steadily declining, totally unlike Mario. I liked Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask A LOT because they were fairly light-hearted, but maintained a nice balance of serious adventure! =P Wind Waker had interesting stuff, but I felt there was WAY too much boating around and didn't end up finishing it. Twilight Princess was too serious, too much fetch quest stuff. Bring us Earthbound already!

Jumpin (on 02 July 2009)

Old NES Mario and Castlevania games also had better level design than the newer ones; actually, I can't currently think of anything better than those in terms of 2D level design.

Yridian (on 02 July 2009)

To jmcraddock, You can't say they're milking Mario too much, then state without Mario they would lose, all in the same breath. If you're right, and Mario is the only thing helping them win, then they're not milking the franchise enough.

kazadoom (on 02 July 2009)

Is anyone else experiencing the text bars bleeding into the side bar? I am on Safari 4 on a mac and every story like this, the image and text is shifted to the right over top of the text and links on the right sidebar. What the heck is going on?

moondeep (on 02 July 2009)

As long as Link has a sword to use, I'm happy with whatever the new Zelda turns out to be. That whole implication of not having a sword scared me :P

TX109 (on 02 July 2009)

not that radically different? i wonder what he means by that?

BoleroOfFire (on 02 July 2009)

I'm really excited about NSMB Wii! (In part because it's the only one coming out this year.) I'm intrigued about the Kind Code. It seems like a good idea. I can play with my nephews/parents and not have them ask me to play a difficult part for them. It's also good to know that SMG 2 will be tougher. @jmcraddock: Interesting theory. Maybe MS should test it out next gen by not releasing a Halo game. ;-)

largedarryl (on 02 July 2009)

What is with this complaint about games being too hard? Mario Galaxy was way to easy. I would be amazed if anybody could go back and play Super Mario Bros. 3 and beat that game without a lot of serious frustration.

jmcraddock (on 02 July 2009)

I think Nintendo is milking their Mario franchise way to much. Next gen consoles if Nintendo doesnt make any Mario games I would GARAUNTEE they would lose

Sapphire (on 02 July 2009)

cant wait for this

dark_gh0st_b0y (on 02 July 2009)

there's no need for Peach to be playable, the two toads alone make the game so cool : ) i hope red Toad is playable as well

CrashMan (on 02 July 2009)

Go back and play some NES games. There are some amazingly challenging games (Contra sans Konami Code, Battle toads, Megaman 1, etc etc etc) These are games I grew up on and played when I was 5 or 6. Modern games have really lowered the bar on difficulty.

bardicverse (on 02 July 2009)

What's with the author complaining about games being too hard? I went back and played some last gen games and some VC games recently, and I've witnessed how games now are a lot easier than the older ones were. Hell, I had to really bust my butt in Time Splitters 2 single player missions on Normal in order to get past each level.

V-r0cK (on 02 July 2009)

Cant wait for NSMB Wii! I dont think Peach will be a main or playable character if its anything like going on adventures to save the princess lol
