Analyst Michael Pachter today confirmed that The Lost and the Damned - Rockstar's exclusive GTA IV content for Xbox 360 - has sold one million so far, and is likely to reach two million downloads by the end of the year. A second GTA IV episode for Xbox 360 is expected by the holidays.

This follows Microsoft's statement earlier in the week that The Lost and the Damned had "eclipsed first-day revenue for all previous downloadable content on Xbox Live".

Pachter also expects a new console version of GTA to arrive in 2010 and that sales should exceed GTA IV by more than 50% due to the greater install base. Stay tuned for more info.

Hephaestos (on 09 March 2009)

got a card to buy this (1600 points) and a 1 year live subscription for 40£ (they had a 5.5£ rebate on the combo).
Probably would have waited longer on buying live otherwise, so yeah this helps more than just download sales...

DirtyP2002 (on 08 March 2009)

Yes! 4 million downloads for 2 DLC = 80 million USD!

The sales of the original game favouring the Xbox360 PS360 users chosing the Xbox version over the PS3 version.
The marketing aspect that the Xbox360 got the "better" game
The value added to the game library for the Xbox360
MS pretty much secured the next GTA retail game coming to the Xbox360, because the audience is there
Encouraging people to actually connect the Xbox360 to the internet, so XBL gets bigger.

This was probably the best move MS could have done. It worked out damn well. You need to be very fanboyish to call that a flop!

typicalgamer (on 07 March 2009)

but was it worth it to pay 50 mil for a million downloads?

madskillz (on 07 March 2009)

LOL, D21. Loved it - wish you could bring the weapons and cars into Niko's story.

@sebnod - troll much? It's an awesome episode and gives a gamer the entire city open from the jump. It is better than the main story, IMHO and will pay for itself in increased sales of hardware. Excellent investment for MS. I never considered it a gamble - we're talking about GTA!

d21lewis (on 07 March 2009)

I'll be lost and damned very soon.

Maynard_Tool (on 07 March 2009)

sorry, i was drunk when i wrote that :s (note to myself, don't get into vgchartz when i drink >.>)

anywayz, wow.... that was kind of quick O.o

jin_ivasawa (on 07 March 2009)

thats big ... go 360 DLC

TheTruthHurts! (on 07 March 2009)

@ sebnod

Don't forget......it is still selling great with another (360 exclusive) episode on the way. I might hold off on the "flop" talk until sales are all said and done for both.....hmmmmm. Oh, and the reviews (above 90% metacritic) are great as well, great job MS.

DirtyP2002 (on 07 March 2009)

That is HUGE. That is more then Killzone2 sold so far. crazy stuff. And the good thing is, everybody seems to like it so far.

sebnod (on 07 March 2009)

1 million? a flop for a 50 millions $ exclusive.

make a better DLC on PS3.

NeoRatt (on 07 March 2009)

@Kai Master... Microsoft paid $50 million for R to make the DLC. They do not get anything from sales other then royalties from Live. It is highly doubtful that it will ever pay for itself directly. If you remember back to last year there was a rumour that the DLC might be free as Microsoft stated pricing was entirely up ro R.

NeoRatt (on 07 March 2009)

I bought it the day it came out. This is better then the original GTA IV. It is faster to get into, and is way more fun... Totally worth the $20.

Kai Master (on 07 March 2009)

I don't know if that's enought to cover the cost of the exclusivity :/ But that's at least good for the Xbox 360 atractivness against the PS3...

Cueil (on 07 March 2009)

Maynard_Tool you are like a totally diffrent person on here from your VGChartz persona

wholikeswood (on 07 March 2009)

Maynard, you fishing for a reaction from PS3 owners? Tsk.

On topic, these are good (if expected) sales.

flagship (on 07 March 2009)

I wonder if this includes all those activation codes sold to companies like Gamestop?

Either way impressive numbers, MS's investment is looking pretty good right now.

heruamon (on 07 March 2009)

@milanez...

That was sony's bust, not take-two's, since M$ paid for the content, so I'm sure Take Two will glad take Sony's money, if they want some exclusive DLC as well. the LTD sales for these download will generate something on the order of $100 million in sales, and think about the holiday season...if the DLC comes out in November, you can advertise the heck outta it to get more sales of GTA...along with a price cut for the original game.

milanez (on 06 March 2009)

so that's 20 million revenue already, and they expect 40 from first one alone while paying only(or at the time a holy cow) 50 million for 2 expansion packs. Seems like a great investment for Ms. But did it pay off just as well for take two? They might have made another 20 million on ps3 as well.

damndl0ser (on 06 March 2009)

@Falcon095
The Lost and Damned can be downloaded for 1600 Microsoft Points ($19.99).

myths n legends (on 06 March 2009)

nice... they at least have one more future purchase (from me)

Draven26 (on 06 March 2009)

I would love to play this but sadly I own a PS3 and thus Rockstar deems me not worthy of this expansion...

scottie (on 06 March 2009)

Whilst I am sure that that number is approximately right, it would be nice if Pachter would cite his sources. The days of people believing him without proof are over
