The representative told IGN that “[The] NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans.”

kind of frustrating considering it has been sold out since it was released and is mega popular. But I think its quite obvious why they're discontinuing it.... the Virtual Console will come out and they want people to buy things on that. Cheaper for them to sell you old games digitally than to manufacture even something cheap like the NES Classic. I also get the feeling that something like the NES Classic (despite likely good profits) is something that Nintendo doesn't feel like bother with thinking about manufacturing and distributing if they have other stuff selling well. I.e. the Classic seems like it was just something they came up with quickly to make their last holiday sales not get too low. Frustrating but with the Virtual Console probably coming after E3 it makes some sense. Particularly with NES Classics getting hacked
Exactly. This was intended just to bridge the gap of slumped sales from WiiU not pulling the numbers it needed to. If Switch's launch was a failure, I'd bet NES Classic would've continued, with a SNES Classic to follow.
I get the point, but it's still a bit strange considering in my market flashback consoles for Sega and Atari have been around for years. Granted, they dont sell in the same volume and are manufacturers who dont make consoles anymore, but it still could have been a bit more of a cash cow for Nintendo.
"We're fine for money" - Nintendoâ„¢
I wish that I was so rich I could hate making money.
Why? Just sell it a profit making price and keep it coming, allocate the production on a second tier FOXCON factory and produce the thing till the end of times. If it is selling, KEEP MAKING IT.
That requires logic, which Nintendo sometimes seems to not have. Their limited supply benefitted scalpers in the first place and doing this is going to make the prices skyrocket even more.
Just an FYI for everyone, it'd be cheaper to get a wii and homebrew it now. You'll even get the benefit of a better controller
Thank god I got my hands on one of these last week. Nintendo's business decisions make no sense to me sometimes.
Forget the VB and Wii U, this has got to be the dumbest decision by Nintendo ever. Sure, this thing isn't going to be in demand for years on end, but until that demand dies, ride that wave, baby.
they've obviously discontinuing it because they're going to want people to buy NES games on the Virtual Console in a few months.
Makes sense, no? Right?
Makes no dollars, too.
Nintendo could have upped their margins massively and sold it at an MSRP of $99.99. The only way I've seen these for sale is through 3rd party flippers and haven't seen one go for less than $200.
Just ordered one, let's hope it's worth it
Aw crap I wanted to get one but was not able to find one and I don't expect I'll be able to get one in the next month now that they'll be more in demand than ever.
