Chinese Internet company Tencent has acquired Clash of Clans developer Supercell for $8.6 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Tencent and its partners are buying an 84.3 percent stake in the Finnish developer from Japanese company SoftBank.

This is more than the $5.9 billion Activision Blizzard spent to acquire Candy Crush Saga developer King Digital Entertainement.

Wow, so much money for these companies but then with the profits they make on such simple concepts, you can see why.

Very risky with these 1 hit wonder mobile companies. Doubt they will ever get their money back, Supercell made $930M profit last year, $950M in 2014. They'd need to remain another 8-9 years at the top spot for Tencent to get their money back, and we know with mobile devs they usually crash and burn once they're out of fashion and the masses move on to the next big thing, which happens every few years.

To be fair, i believe Supercell has at least two hits: Clash of Clans and Clash Royale

Some of these companies are mostly getting money out of China.

strange. I don't doubt some of these mobile games are making a lot of money versus the investment in developing the games HOWEVER it would probably take YEARS for a mobile developer like Supercell to make billions in revenue, let alone profit.

Unless I'm underestimating the mobile market. It seems like these bigger companies spending loads on smaller successful mobile game developers must be some sort of long play with the expectation that mobile gaming is going to continue growing exponentially bigger

8.6 billion seems outrageous though

@mountaindewslave the fact is that games such as Candy Crush and Clash of Clans have been proven to be addicting, "forcing" people to play them for years in many cases
