Exactly, like the image in the article, you better start doing blowjobs to buy that thing.
Jesus Christ. xD
How are they goint to turn VR into something popular if you have to expend 599$ plus PC/Console plus games? And how much games are going to sell on an userbase limited so much by that kind of pricewall?
Start of expensive so you can keep having price cuts every few months and always stay relevant and in the news. Facebook know some 'suckers' will buy it at this price too.
Here's hoping Sony can find that sweet spot for price like they did with the ps4 at its launch. Sony can subsidise some costs from sales of games for the hardware from any publisher, whereas oculus will only make money from those games they've exclusively signed up, because otherwise majority will buy games off steam
Don't worry, the cheap console version holding technology back will be available for people like you who whine about prices. Tech isn't cheap, especially tech with dozens of patents inside of it.
$599 with all of that included is not even that bad.
Whine about prices? Don't be a dick Sharpryno. I am a college student who loves VR anytime i've tried it but cannot afford $600 on a vr headset, let alone one which is gameless.
People have the right to expect value for money, and while some may see value in the technology, others may not. Oculus and PSVR are devices that rely on other devices to work. So you have to add that to the cost. Then games. Whereas a Samsung Phone can be bought for the same price and thus has more value because it has apps included, doesnt require extra hardware and even has lesser but still vr features.
If you're rich enough that a $600 purchase doesn't phase you, then congratulations on earning that money. Many do not, yet still want to play games and want to experience new tech, and have the right to debate whether a price out of their means is fair or not.
So don't be a dick and have some humility ffs.
I never said it was cheap. It's just my expectations are realistic.
I'd much rather spend my money on a 27" BenQ 144GHz 1ms gaming monitor for $499 than VR. I will wait for it to improve. The first iteration is going to be a mess.
Like I said, the cheap console version for ~$299 is coming for people like you. Not referring to class, but people who whine about prices for NEW TECHNOLOGY. For christs sakes your cell phone probably costs more.
$599 isn't even the expensive part. That is the specs your PC will need to run it well. newer i7 and gtx 970+ That's another $600 about.
Remember when Sony waited for Microsoft to announce the XB1 price before announcing theirs? Well, pretty much this ^
I will eat ghost peppers if they released at that price lol.
danm... now i realy can't see PSVR geting under US$400.
Well fuck. I predicted VR to bomb, but I couldn't have immagined it to be THIS expensive
599 US DOLLARS
It expensive but I think of it as the Atari 2600 of VR. Atari 2600 was release for $200 in 1977. When you take in account inflation that equivalent of ~$800 in today dollars. $600 not that outrageous for a new tech and over time it will come down in price.
VR... screw VR, wake me up when Holodecks exist and NO, the HoloLens is NOT a hologram. Anyone who tells you that it is, they are a moron.
VR better be realistic because this price point is not.
Might as well add a comment about potentially using a pair of VR goggles which require a smartphone to work as an Oculus Rift replacement. You can get cheap ones which simply hold your phone for less than £50 now. I figured if you could set it to display a copy of a PC's display, you can load and run games designed for the Oculus Rift in a window, which would have the same effect on your phone display.
I figured for them to mirror the display to a Smartphone, the most universal option was to use various sorts of remote desktop access. I used first a iPhone 5S then a Nexus 7 (2013) as test devices. After trying Splashtop, RDP, VNC and Teamviewer I gave up - the latency was so bad (250-500ms) it made games unplayable. I got the same latency results in VR friendly games (such as Dreadhalls) and normal PC games (such as Fallout 3, which I use as a "control" when testing PCs). I did not try Airplay as an iPhone can't be a receiver of the video stream, only the transmitter.
Sure, one can argue there will eventually be plenty of content for the Gear VR. However considering the difficulty of getting indie and free titles on Google Play, the poor performance of smartphone graphics compared to PC and console, and the fact the specialised Samsung content only works on a limited set of expensive cellphones (cheapest is the S6 at £379 SIM-free) it doesn't seem worth it at all.
No doubt mid-range graphics card sales are going to plummet. Only gamers who can afford high end PCs can justify paying a price point this high. I was hoping along with others for a ~£350 unit with support for a lower end graphics unit - maybe a faster 720p display option?
Still, they sold through their initial inventory in 14 minutes, and they had to push their shipping dates back for new orders. Kinda scary.
I knew that this will be a one big FAIL. They should invest these 2 billions in games and not the hardware.

well, better luck next generation because it will bomb at that price.
299$ PS VR.... if sony does that, this price ends up looking like a joke.
or if they make a 599,- PSVR + PS4 oh my god, the 3d card you need for the oculus alone costs half that lol
I think Samsung's VR will be more popular. This requires you to pay $600 for the thing itself, and you need the console and said games for it to work. Samsung only requires one of the newer phones, an the VR headgear itself(which is only 100 bucks)
I think the Samsung VR is made in cooperation with Oculus. In the end, facebook may still be seeing the final buck.
According to a quick search, the cheapest SIM-free compatible Galaxy phone (S6 32gb Black) is £379. Headset is $99 = £67, a controller is an extra £60 or so, meaning its £506 total (£6 more than the project £499 UK price of the Oculus Rift). Not to mention because its an Android smartphone, the graphics are going to suck and the content is going to be limited.
Then again, you'd need more money for the PC/PS4.
As far as I'm aware, this bundle is the only SKU it will be launching with so no lower priced options for now sadly :(
