Schafer: Criticism Facing Molyneux is Blown Out of Proportion - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 19 February 2015 / 5,231 Views

Tim Schafer, the creator behind games such as Monkey Island, Grim Fandango and Brutal Legend,  in his latest Broken Age Kickstarter update video has stated that the criticism facing Peter Molyneux is blown out of proportion.

"I’d like to send our support to friend and fellow developer Peter Molyneux," said Schafer in a transcript of the video from MCVUK. "In the last few weeks we’ve seen some extremely rough treatment of Peter on the internet and in the games press and I think it’s really unfortunate and unfair, and I don’t think it’s healthy."

"Obviously things did not go as expected with his game and because of that people are making some nasty accusations about Peter, and I can really relate to that, believe it or not. But I’m not saying that developers like Peter and I shouldn’t be responsible and shouldn’t be accountable to deadlines. I’m just saying that the reaction to recent events and the tone of that reaction is really way out of proportion to the seriousness of the events themselves."

"Developers are human beings and I think it’s clear that the problems that Peter is having are not unique to him. In fact, they happen on many if not most projects."

The man needs help. He has a 20 year old problem, and we're all worried for him.
But I don't think abusing him online will convince him to finally learn, it just puts him on the defensive and suddenly it's not about what he can do help himself, it'll just be about how to dodge similar criticism in future.

Believe it or not. I've never hated Peter Molyneux. I like him more than his games, not that I've played any, but I've always wanted to try Fable, it's world does look immersive enough for me to enjoy it despite the rumors about how mediocre the RPG side is. His games may not be perfect but it doesn't mean they are instantly bad. They seem to be average or just above due to game art or ambitious (which I see as a good thing) design. But he seems like fun especially his video were he reviews farting Apps in a 'professional' manor. He may seem pretentious but he does it intentionally for the humor, he just doesn't take things too seriously as some may think. For example, his 'cube' presentation was obviously designed to look like the most pretentious intention of the whole industry, and it worked. He knew it would be seen as funny and he generally found it funny cos he wouldn't have came up with the idea. THAT is intelligent successful trolling and my hat goes down to him.

I agree that Peter Molyneux shouldn't have been attacked like this and the RPS journalist (if we can even call it that) was extremely unprofessional. Schafer understands this because he's been guilty of the same delays and overpromises as Molyneux, but he is somehow on the gamers/press' good side.

He gets "hate" because he has NEVER once delivered on a so called promise and there is a phrase for that. "FUCKING LIAR" nuff said.

He's not a liar, he's just hugely irresponsible.

Have you read the interview? The issue isn't just Peter making promises his games don't meet. The issue is him funding a game on kickstarter, taking money from backers, saying the game would be completed in 7 months, not completing the game in three years, and not delivering on items promised to backers. It's not a matter of disappointment, it's a matter of theft.

He didn't just miss the deadline. He missed the deadline by over two years. That leaves us with two possibilities. Either he's completely incompetent and didn't do the proper amount of work and planning to ensure that he had a workable plan, or he lied. Considering the obscenely short time frame he proposed, I'm guessing the second.

People should have been wise enough not to back him in the first place, but at this point, he deserves the criticism. He made promises that he should have known he could not keep, and he's being called on his bs.
