Super Smash Bros. Creator Says Wii U Version Likely His Final in the Franchise - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 04 December 2014 / 6,194 ViewsSuper Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai in an interview with Game Informer (and spotted by CVG) has stated that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will more than likely be the last in the franchise that he works on.
"I can't positively declare there won't be [another Smash Bros. game]," said Sakurai. "With both Melee and Brawl, I made those games with the thought that there wouldn't be any more sequels. Thus, I really can't deny the chance for another. However, as for myself, I don't think there will be."
"Our intention [with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U] was to provide extra merits to the game which go far beyond the sale price," he added. "In terms of scope, and in terms of sheer number of characters, we went beyond our limits long ago. And yet, if we cut the number of fighters or modes in a future game, I'm sure there would be complaints."
While Sakurai stated that he is more than likely done with the franchise it is certainly possible that someone else will step up and take charge in the future.
"You could say that all the effort in the past to stretch out, keep pushing myself, and provide all these extra merits wound up tightening the noose around my neck in the future," said Sakurai. "That may seem like it contradicts my personal desire to keep giving gamers as much as I can, but I don't see any easy answer for it. And yet, despite that, I also have trouble picturing someone else taking my place and providing all this value-added content without me."

Smash games wouldn't be the same without him. However, I understand if he doesn't want to do it anymore. Making these Smash titles were wearing down on his health. If this is his final Smash game, then I hope he's willing to still do some DLC stages. He could add all of the Melee and Brawl stages for DLC to make it the ultimate "last" game.
I do know that there shouldn't be another Smash for the Wii U. The next Nintendo console...yes along with MK.
If he's being serious this time(he said the same after Brawl), it is saddening but maybe someone will finally step up to bat.
He said the same after Brawl. But he's right, there's a lot of characters, and reducing the roster would be unacceptable. All I would expect from a sequel is the return of every character that's ever been in Smash, maybe 4 or 5 new characters, and maybe a couple new Mii classes. If he could recycle the data for the Wii U characters, update the Melee and Brawl dropouts, and just reuse all past stages from all the games, updating the older ones to HD, and throw in all the game modes, there would be enough recycled content to make it doable, I think. He could call it Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Edition, and from there, work on a spiritual successor to Smash that changes up the fighting genre in a new way, like Smash did, but in it's own way, and it could start with a smaller roster because it's a new series.
