Google Play topped the iOS App Store last quarter when it came to downloads. Google Play had 60 percent more downloads, up from 25 percent more during the same quarter a year ago. The information comes from a report from research company App Annie.

Despite having more downloads the iOS App Store brought in more revenue. However, the gap in revenue did shrink year-over-year. It dropped to a 60 percent advantage for the iOS App Store.

The increase in revenue and downloads for Google Play in North America and South Korea were driving from gaming. Worldwide mobile gaming is expected to double by 2017 to $35.4 billion, from $17.5 billion.

In all fairness though there are about 50 to 60 (possibly more) Android devices to chose from. Many of them over the counter throw away phones. Not to mention many Android games are free and ad-driven. Just an observation though. Oh, and before people go off on me as some Apple puppet, let it be known that I actually own both platforms:iPhone and 2 Android tablets.
