The top selling 8th generation console, the 3DS, has hit a new milestone. The handheld has now sold more than 45 million units worldwide as of September 27.
The biggest market for the 3DS is in Japan where it has sold 16.31 million units. Nearly a third of the sales came in the US where 12.86 million units have been sold. Sales are similar in Europe with 11.94 million units sold.
Pokémon X/Y is the top selling game for the 3DS with 11.86 million units sold. It took the game exactly a year to reach that milestone. The second bestselling game is Mario Kart 7 with 9.83 million units sold, followed by Super Mario 3D Land with sales of 9.61 million units. Both of those game are on pace to top 10 million sold by the end of the year.
Other top selling games include New Super Mario Bros. 2 with sales of 7.73 million units and Animal Crossing: New Leaf with sales of 6.96 million units.
Nintendo last month announced the New 3DS with improved specs that will launch in Japan and Australia this year and 2015 for the rest of the world. Nintendo is also releasing a NES looking 3DS XL, as well as a Persona themed 3DS XL in North America this year.
