Nintendo: Wii U Still Sold at a Loss - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 08 August 2013 / 6,613 Views

Last year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced that the Wii U would be sold at a loss at launch. However, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime later said that the loss is small and the sale of one game will turn the "entire transaction" profitable.

A Nintendo representative has told GamesIndustry International that the Wii U is still being sold at a loss. Iwata also stated that after a loss of 36.4 billion yen last fiscal year the company will return to profit in the current fiscal year. This significantly lowers the chance that Nintendo will drop the price of the Wii U this holiday.

The Wii U launched last November with two bundles. The basic bundle for $300 and the deluxe bundle for $350. Several retailers have stopped selling the basic bundle and now only stock the deluxe bundle.

Selling at a loss? Was the Wii U 32gb supposed to sell for $399 and the 8gb for $349? Nintendo got ripped off from whoever they bought the parts from to make the Wii U.

How could it possibly be sold at a loss? The thing is expensive as heck considering the hardware packed in it and the HDD! My god. I won't even consider getting one until the price goes down, hard drive goes up and library gets something useful other than New Super Mario Bros U.

Look no further then the game pad. That game pad costed them a pretty penny to develop and produce.

I find it hard to believe that they are selling it at a loss. I would not be surprised to see them drop the touch screen controller in the future, and to include a standard wireless controller so they can drop the Wii U price substantially below that of the PS4 and XB1
