Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.

This week we will be celebrating the announcement of the first 3DS Pokémon title, Pokémon X / Y, by looking at the top 10 bestselling Pokémon games. Two weeks ago we looked at the top 10 bestselling Mario games and the week before that the top 10 bestselling Sega Genesis games. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Top 10 Selling Pokemon Games

Looking at the top 10 bestselling Pokémon games, there release dates span three decades, the 1990’s, 2000’s, and 2010’s. Three of the games were released in the 1990’s, six of the games were released in the 2000’s and one was released in the 2010’s.

The top 10 bestselling Pokémon games sold a combined 153.53 million games. This makes it easily one of the biggest top 10 lists. The first Pokémon games, Red / Green / Blue, has sold over 30 million units, while Gold / Silver is the only other titles to sell more than 20 million units. Eight of the top 10 games have sold more than 10 million units.

All 10 games are for handhelds. Three titles are for the Gameboy, three are for the Gameboy Advance, and four are for the DS. The three Gameboy games sold a combined 69.11 million units or 45.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three Gameboy Advance games sold a combined 32.75 million units or 21.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The four DS titles sold a combined 51.67 million units or 33.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Top 10 Selling Pokemon Games

Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling Pokémon games as a graph really shows how popular the franchise is. If we looked at other top 10 a lot of them wouldn’t even have one game that sold as much as the 10th bestselling Mario game. Also the second game in a Pokémon generation usually doesn’t sell as well as the first pair of games.

Here are other Pokémon sales: 14 games sold five million or more units and 22 games sold two million or more units. The top 30 games sold one million or more units, while 34 sold 500,000 or more units. The Pokémon franchise has sold 217.36 million units to date.

Here is the breakdown in Pokémon sales by platform. 85.40 million games were sold on the Gameboy, 38.12 million sold on the Gameboy Advance, and 74.25 million sold on the DS. 12.26 million games were sold on the Nintendo 64, 4.44 million sold on the GameCube, and just 1.52 million sold on the Wii.

Here is the breakdown by regions. 86.27 million games were sold in North America, 51.55 million in Europe and 69.23 million in japan. 10.31 million were sold in other regions around the world.

Massive appeal of 3D? This is the first Pokemon that is really in 3D, we don't know what effect that will have

Pokemon will never achieve the same sales again as it had for the original Red and Blue. It's extremely popular as it has always been, but it's not a phenomenon like it was in the late '90s where literally everyone knew what it was and knew people who played it.

ktay95 (on 09 January 2013)

thats because it was new, innovative and had no competition. now the video game market is crammed with AAA titles like CoD, Halo, GTA or Monster Hunter (for Japan)

The Pokemon series isn't on decline. B/W was the last main series game for the DS so naturally it would sell less than the first main series game for the DS. I wonder if B/W will pass up Ruby/Sapphire though.

pezus (on 08 January 2013)

B/W 2 was the last main series game actually ;o

thats like saying games that launched on wii in 2012 (maybe even 2011) were declining when we all know software sales drop off at the end of a consoles life.

" and just 1.52 million sold on the Wii." No. According to vgchartz ist sold 3.35 million on the Wii. You forgot both PokePark games: PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure - 1.19 PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond - 0.64

MANUELF (on 08 January 2013)

Surprised Black and White haven't managed to overtake Ruby and Sapphire, but guess this is mostly because they were the second set of main series games on the DS. Doubt they'll manage it now that X and Y have been announced.

Araknie (on 09 January 2013)

And Pokčmon Black / White 2 are at 6.14m, but they are young.

menx64 (on 08 January 2013)

Looks like its on decline. It'll never match the GB era. I blame PC emulators and the PSP.
