Microsoft and Intel Aim to Cut iPad Market Share to Under 50% - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 18 April 2012 / 6,124 Views

Microsoft and Intel are working closely together on new tablet PCs based on Windows 8, according to a report from DigiTimes. Windows 8 is set to launch in September and Windows RT at a later date, which is specific for ARM architecture.

The goal is to decrease the global market share of the iPad to below 50 percent, from the 70 percent it is currently at, by mid 2013. 32 Windows 8 tablet PCs are set to launch by the end of 2012. The tablets will be released by Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asustek Computer and Toshiba. Entry level models are to be sold below $300, while higher end models, above $300, are set to challenge the iPad.

If any one can pull that off its MS, as long as the price is right.....

Maybe, maybe not. How many times have we had these "soon to be released" ipod, iphone, ipad "killers"? It seems like everyday.

Most people believe the hype generated by all these "Apple killers" but Apple still rules.

What about android? Is that simply going to disappear?

Time will tell.

Hope they do, maybe Apple will get some lessons of pricing.

Seeing as most companies like Samsung, Sony etc are releasing tablets that have similar prices to the iPad, and seeing as millions of people still see the value of the products despite the price I don't think Apple have anything to learn.

In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Windows 8 tablets launch for around £400, which is comparable to the mainstream Android devices in addition to the iPad.

Seems a few conflictions there. Windows RT is for ARM not Intel, for one thing.

Lots and lots of conflictions indeed Mr. Homeroids.

Does Intel still own some ARM related IP? Does it still produce ARM chips? Anyway, what always fucked up such projects was
Intel greed making netbooks, tablets and the like become too expensive, and MS fear of cannibalizing the sales of much more expensive and profitable per unit desktop versions of Windows, and so imposing stupid limits on the HW supported. OTOH the last linux-based projects before Android failed, despite not forcing any limit, because HW producers actually never really believed in them and were so incompetent to choose crappy distros with horrible presumed user-friendly interfaces badly glued on them or, like Asus, after starting with good intentions, later surrendered to MS pressure and let the Linux range, initially market leader of the new niche, but still immature and needing a lot of work on the UI user-friendliness, slip back into marginality again. This time, though, MS must fight in a market that wasn't born as a niche of PC one, so it cannot use its dominant position there to stop or at least slow competitors. And now netbooks and tablets descending from PC have been surpassed in an overwhelming way by smartphones and tablets derived from smartphone HW or other not wintel-derived SW-HW combinations.
Obviously the combined financial and technological power of MS and Intel can eventually push the new project to a relevant position in the tablet market, but no competitor will cede anything easily, and MS is allied with probably the only company on earth greedier than it, so if there will be the need at any time to sell those HW-SW combinations at a loss, the loss will be entirely on MS' shoulders.

The tablet race will begin when windows eneters it. I am very confident that they will their tablets will take marketshare from android and apple tablets. I have been holding out for them. I am excited about windows 8 for phones tablets and home pcs.

Right like the Zune was going to destroy the Ipod. Microsoft how about making a operating system that works with out having to buy a new version a year later. I'm still using XP because Vista was ass. Avoided 7, and will wait for 8 until the first update.

Zune was actually better than the iPod

When was Zune suppose to destroy Ipod?

Windows 8 and its RT (Runtime) partner certainly have some potential in the Tablet world add into the Mix Intel with the medfield chip and we may get some momentum. Certainly the Windows Phone has demonstrated how solid OS design does not mean we need to play the specs game just to get a platform to run smoothly. Of course telcos and manufacturers are happy to sell the myth and cosumers seem to happily buy into it.

I am not sure why the windows phone comment got marked down. The new Nokia WP is 100x better than the iPhone. I expect WP to eventually overtake iOS in 2-3 years.

For tablets, I think reducing iOS to 50% marketshare is definitely achievable fairly quickly, especially if some business friendly versions are released.

Of course it is gonna happen. If the tablet PC is about to replace Notebooks, there is no chance that one hardware device will dominate in the 70% range. I miss Samsung as a manufacturer though. Aren't they not producing tablets with Windows 8? Sony should team up with MS as well.

yeah i wonder as well! samsung was even the first who made a windows 8 tablet for testing purposes.

The Windows platform for smartphones is really only just getting started. Now that Microsoft has signed a big partnership deal with Nokia I would expect some big things here. Only time will tell I guess.

Cheaper alternatives to the over priced Apple products. Apple products look good but they are out of the price range for many consumers. The Tablet market needs more competition. Bring it on!

If they mean to say they'll have 20% marketshare in the next year to 18 months then they are crazy. If Apple loses that kind of ground in that short a time frame then other competitors are going to have to take away from them as well. That means a growing Android marketshare, which isn't good for MS in the least.

About WP, Nokia chose Symbian instead of it for its most advanced smartphone: http://techthingdaily.com/2012/02/29/nokia-reveals-808-pureview-featuring-42mp-camera/

Most advanced smartphone? You mean most advanced camera on a phone? Perhaps the development was nearing completion before the switch over to WP?

I believe Nokia has confirmed the camera for future Windows phones.

I own a Kindle Fire which is only $200 and its great. As we start seeing most low cost alternatives its pretty much inevitable that iPad will lose a lot of its market share.

Why can't they stop catering to digital and stick to console games? They're going to regret this in the future.....

If its Intel, expect expensive tablets with crap battery life, ARM processor tablets are the only real way forward here.

Not gonna happen. Apple is just too popular and their products are engraved in the minds of the average consumer. If someone wants to buy a tablet, they'll buy an iPad, not a Dell Tabletron 1260n......

If Apple was losing marketshare, they could easily cut the price of even the newer iPads by hundreds of dollars.....they can afford it.

  • 0
dallas VGKing (on 19 April 2012)

But apple has been losing marketshare..... They started out with 95% a few years ago and now have 60% , and this is expected to drop further...

  • 0
welshbloke VGKing (on 19 April 2012)

Losing markethsare is almost a given for them by how much and how quickly is the only real mystery.

"32 Windows 8 tablet PCs are set to launch by the end of 2012"
There are only what 3 versions of the ipad now to choose from. Will be hard to cover the low end, middle, and high end with choices like that.

As for android, windows can compete with them on any ground, and that is where the fight will be. I see apple only loosing market share from here on out. They price themselves to be a premium product and not everyone can own a premium product.
