alfredofroylan2 (on 28 July 2008)

@ outlawauron It's a good game, but in Japan it's more attched to handhelds. Wario World for the gamecube sold 142,000 in Japan during its lifetime

outlawauron (on 27 July 2008)

@ dark prince They sold that much?! Wow, that's a bigger flop than I thought! Is the game not very good? Or it could be like monster hunter, where the game just sucks on consoles. That could be the case if Wario on sold on handhelds.

Egghead (on 27 July 2008)

Wario Land 4 was a Treasure game, good to see they actually got a good selling game = P

.:Dark Prince:. (on 27 July 2008)

@Smashchu2 Wario Land GB: 1.59 million Japan Wario Land 2: 390k Japan Wario Land 3: 340k Japan Wario Land 4: 550k Japan Riiiight...

Simulacrum (on 27 July 2008)

"Machi-ing Maker DS" Always new games and new games that suck and are at top 20 about week or two.. Thats maybe 1 reason these "hardcore" games wont sell so much. If in month there wouldnt be these "week" games then i think all good games would sell more.

whacker41 (on 27 July 2008)

The thing i find most amusing about this is that Guitar hero 3, despite selling only 1k, actually sold better than i expected. heh.

Soriku (on 26 July 2008)

Oh, WW? Eh...maybe then.

Smashchu2 (on 26 July 2008)

Oh Wario Land's sales The previous Wario games never really did amazingly in Japan. Most of the time they sold ~30k total. They majority of the sales will be in the US.

Kasz216 (on 26 July 2008)

It's cheaper? That's... just weird considering the great difference over here...

XiaoMay (on 26 July 2008)

@Garcian Smith : well, considering all Wario Land games before were great success, yeah, many were expecting good sales. Even the DS iteration, which didnt sell well, had around 80K first week Other version were more around 200k on 1st week.

wenlan (on 26 July 2008)

@Kasz, The Wii version PPB15 is priced lower than the PS2 version in Japan Price listed at Amazon.jp: PS2: 6,426 yen after 8% discount (list price: 6,980 yen) Wii: 5,181 yen after 13% discount (list price: 5,981 yen) 3:1 sales of this game is in line with the userbase ratio between PS2 and Wii (~3.5: 1)

outlawauron (on 26 July 2008)

@ Soriku It was released everywhere in the world on the PSN, and separted into three episodic packs.

takkxyz (on 26 July 2008)

Any information on how many copies of Wario is shipped?

Torillian (on 26 July 2008)

@Soriku, he's talking about WW. It was released everywhere on the same day.

OLDSKOOL (on 25 July 2008)

I think Nintendo's strategy this time of showing a game a couple weeks before release has failed. Don't get me wrong Wario Wii will have long legs but 10K first day must be a disappointment! Good showing for Powerful Pro PS2!

dschumm (on 25 July 2008)

The trouble with the Wario game is that people wanted New Super Mario Bros. Wii. That is a 2D platformer that would have sold.

silverlunar777 (on 25 July 2008)

I am pretty shocked at wario, I though Japan loved side scrollers...

Soriku (on 25 July 2008)

@ssj 300k minimum? Yeah right. Even Siren on the PS2 didn't sell 300k lifetime in Japan...let alone the PS3 version doing 300k on the first day.

Kasz216 (on 25 July 2008)

As for Wario. No idea why it did so bad. Sad too i love 2-D platformers. FAR cry from what Super Paper Mario or Wario: Master of Disguise did.

Kasz216 (on 25 July 2008)

To be fair about PPB 15... the PS2 version is a LOT cheaper then the Wii version... for little difference. For the US it's $39.99 for the Wii and $19.99 PS2. 3 to 1 sales when the Wii version is twice the price is good. If Japan follows the same policy i'd say it'd be ignorant to call 3 to 1 bad... heck it's pretty stupid to call it bad in anycase... since the Power Pro games are all about gameplay and the two games are the same. Only reason to get the Wii version over the PS2 is some Mii options.

Yakuzaice (on 25 July 2008)

Siren did better than I thought it would considering it was already available on PSN, and the PS2 iterations weren't really big sellers

siberdib (on 25 July 2008)

Poor showing for poor old Wario, cant wait till its released in europe.

DMeisterJ (on 25 July 2008)

@ Soriku. No. SMSluggers: 60k 30k 18k 11k 14k Unless Wario opens with 60k, no. @ trestres Can't. No 2D platforers have came out in forever. People shouldn't try to excuse Wario's sales. It did bad. Period. I mean, that's just it.

ssj12 (on 25 July 2008)

Siren will be big due to it being available on the PSN and being able to buy it in 3 episode packs. I'm sure it is already over 300k minimum worldwide.

outlawauron (on 25 July 2008)

@ Alfredo I'd say that the horror genre is pretty niche.

trestres (on 25 July 2008)

Ok, then every platformer but Mario, happy everyone? Name me another recent 2D platformer that sold well.

Soriku (on 25 July 2008)

Didn't Super Mario Sluggers have nearly the same exact sales as Wario but still had some good legs? The same could happen.

Kyros (on 25 July 2008)
Yeah, 2D platformers are dead. *cough* New Super Mario Brothers *cough*
2d platformers on home consoles are dead?

Aj_habfan (on 25 July 2008)

I thought Siren was just a PSN game...

Diomedes1976 (on 25 July 2008)

I also feel the PS2 is slowing down the new generation. Its graphics are similar enough to the Wii for many not to make the jump and it still gets many RPG and anime/mecha games of whose it deprives the PS3 and slows down its penetration there. If Sony retired the PS2 from Japan and introduced a slimline BC enabled PS3 SKU it would be a 100% win.

Diomedes1976 (on 25 July 2008)

Not bad for Siren specially considering it never did more than 100K in Japan and it has also the downloadable versions. To be fair all the PS3 releases manage somehow to sneak in the top Ten in their first week, and the next one will be Soul Calibur IV the next week. Big flops for Wario and Powerful Pro Baseball on the Wii.Out of Mario and the Wii Fit/Sports/Play it doesnt seem to sell too much software in Japan.Even its big Tales of game had only decent sales.

alfredofroylan2 (on 25 July 2008)

>Although I don't see why anyone cares Probably because it's a return to the classic 2D gaming in consoles, many people'd love to see a Castlevania 2D o Metroid on consoles.

MontanaHatchet (on 25 July 2008)

I think reasons for Wario bombing should be more on the spectrum of speculation rather than excuses. It did horribly, and I emphasize horribly. And it's going to need some really good legs to pull off any decent amount of sales. Although I don't see why anyone cares, Nintendo has plenty of money already.

saicho (on 25 July 2008)

mabe 2D platformers are dead in home console. There just aren't many of them anymore although I did enjoy Super Paper Mario and Viewtiful Joe.

alfredofroylan2 (on 25 July 2008)

Next week is pretty big: Phantasy Star, Rythm Tengoku, Soul Calibur and Fatal Frame. Probably this a factor for the poor numbers.

DMeisterJ (on 25 July 2008)

Yeah, 2D platformers are dead. *cough* New Super Mario Brothers *cough*

wenlan (on 25 July 2008)

@trestres 2D sidescroller platformers are not dead until Super Mario Bros games stop selling.

Bodhesatva (on 25 July 2008)

Yep, Wario Land Bomb is the biggest deal this week.

Quickdraw McGraw (on 25 July 2008)

It's nice to see the PS3 is finally getting a steady stream of games in Japan. I think having a continuous portfolio of new games could help it a lot more than the rare blockbuster hits. All it needs is more jRPG/Japan-Centric titles, and it could pick up.

Zucas (on 25 July 2008)

Ouch for everything haha. Maybe its just bad first days but nothing in there too impressive. Ah for so many new releases seems that it still will be a disappointing week.

alfredofroylan2 (on 25 July 2008)

I was thinking about Wario and Siren. Both aren't niche titles and people aren't going to the store running for them, so Why bother for the first day sales? Probably both of them'll end near 50k the first week.

trestres (on 25 July 2008)

Well then 2D sidescrollers are dead. Did people check what happened to Contra and Metal Slug. No one is buying 2D platformers anymore. I hope this one has legs. Pretty bad week for everything.

Erik Aston (on 25 July 2008)

Whoa. Bomb for Wario Land. Really pathetic start compared to all the handheld Wario platformers. http://vgchartz.com/japtotals.php?name=wario&console=&maker=&disp=Japanese+Name&boxartz=1

RedWiizard (on 25 July 2008)

==> Soriku Yeah... Broken legs...

sep85dd (on 25 July 2008)

Wario Land for Wii IS a very good Game. But, it donīt have fit or brain in his name, thats the problem. 2-D is the beginning of all Games, i think in Europe the game wolud reach around 500 k.

greeg (on 25 July 2008)

i think have the games load to your hard drive is more fun than have to always inserting the disc ....the same with movies

DMeisterJ (on 25 July 2008)

@ Menago Erm... Why wouldn't I be serious? Siren is not a big game. And it's also available on PSN. Why would I be kidding?

Majin-Tenshinhan (on 25 July 2008)

Ouch, Wario. Ouch. That sucks, it looks like a really good game.

Garcian Smith (on 25 July 2008)

Did anyone honestly expect Wario Land - a 2D platformer starring Mario's evil, retarded cousin - to do well? I certainly didn't.

shams (on 25 July 2008)

Not a good start for Wario... but its likely to sell through the weekend, as its "no fan base" title. 20k for Siren is good though, more than I expected.

Menago KF (on 25 July 2008)

@DMJ You kidding me with "good" first day sales for Siren? Sure you might say that it sold twice as much as Wario, but remeber, that's only 20k. And that is weak. Just not as weak as Wario.

Dark Odin (on 25 July 2008)

itīs true. my avast said also

hanafuda (on 25 July 2008)

Shake one out for Wario Land.

SaviorX (on 25 July 2008)

Wario?

DMeisterJ (on 25 July 2008)

Wow @ Warioland. Well, in brighter news, Siren has good first day sales. We'll never know the actual amount it sells because it's also available on PSN, but the Blu-Ray version did okay.

bigjon (on 25 July 2008)

Wario may open to first week sales of 30k or so... it is very possible that there was not much hype around it... Heck, I did not even know it was being released until it already was... But I am think 150k lifetime in Japan would be a good goal at this point.

alfredofroylan2 (on 25 July 2008)

@TruckOSaurus No it had nice reviews, Wario is a Mixed bag in Japan, in handheld usually has nice sales but in consoles not.

regin2005 (on 25 July 2008)

^^^Forget legs, that game's gonna need a wheelchair

Soriku (on 25 July 2008)

Eh...Wario might have legs.

TruckOSaurus (on 25 July 2008)

Did Wario Land receive horrible reviews or something? Or does Japan hate Wario? What happened?!?!

konnichiwa (on 25 July 2008)

Strange I thought Wario would do good because it is 2D. If I am right the Mario 2D games sold better than the 3D games in Japan....I am kind of shocked.

Dark Odin (on 25 July 2008)

Siren will not do bad. but not high too, it can be downloaded also..

.:Dark Prince:. (on 25 July 2008)

Damn @ Wario. Especially when knowing how good the game is. 100k is likely if it sells another ~20k for the rest of the week.

mrstickball (on 25 July 2008)

Wario Land Shake did horribly. But Powerful Pro Baseball 15 on Wii did better than its last iteneration...The PS2 is still a beast.

--OkeyDokey-- (on 25 July 2008)

I was hoping WarioLand would reach 500k in Japan... Now even 100k seems unlikely.

Kyros (on 25 July 2008)

Too bad that classic 2D Jump&runs do not sell anymore.

hunter_alien (on 25 July 2008)

Wario Land did bad IMO ... PPB 15 by far outnumbers the Wii version .

dolemit3 (on 25 July 2008)

@SpeedBreaker It's for PS2, not PS3

XiaoMay (on 25 July 2008)

lol at Wario Land.

BengaBenga (on 25 July 2008)

Ouch for Wario Land, Powerful Pro as expected, 3:1 PS2:Wii.

SpeedBreaker (on 25 July 2008)

since when Bully was for PS3?
