Fable III: Understone Quest Pack

By Nick Pantazis 29th Nov 2010 | 3,518 views

The first real DLC for Fable III is here.

Now that a month has passed since Fable III’s release, the more devoted of its fans have long since exhausted its not inconsiderable amount of content. To this point the only DLC released has been weapons, outfits, and dye packs. Now the new Understone Quest Pack is here to offer a new sidequest, district of Bowerstone Industrial, and two new minigames, but is it worth your time and the 400 MS points?

The new Understone quest is the main piece of content in the pack, and it involves a short (around 30 minutes) spoof of the Fallout vaults. The quest itself is almost nothing but combat, but the “town” of Understone is an interesting design when you reach it. Unfortunately there isn’t really anything to do in the town aside from a single moral choice at the end of the quest, and some new buildings to buy. The rest of the content is the mercenary shooting range (which really should have been included in the game in the first place) and Reaver’s Wheel of Misfortune, an event from the main story, which returns as a repeatable game for high scores.

The gameplay is unchanged here. The shooting range functions almost exactly as it did in Fable II before it, and the Wheel of Misfortune barely adds any new dialog from the event in the main story. There is perhaps one new enemy in the entire quest pack, and 4 legendary weapons, which are easily acquired from high scores in the Shooting Range and the Wheel of Misfortune. Understone, however, is very well designed, and it’s a nifty little town to explore, for what time you do get out of it. Reever’s Manner will also become one of your homes when you purchase the DLC.

After completing the Wheel, Shooting Range, and Understone quests, you’ll be lucky to get two hours out of the DLC. The total score required to acquire all weapons is not particularly difficult to achieve, although the Shooting Range score depends a little on getting good luck in the high scoring targets that appear. There are no new achievements here, and both the Shooting Range and Wheel of Misfortune feel as though they should have been available in the main game anyway.

It’s hard to recommend the Understone Quest Pack. There is certainly nothing bad about it, but there’s just not very much here. The real problem is that so much of it feels like content that was really meant to be a part of the main game, and the lack of achievements for your 400 MS points. That said, it’s not a high price for a couple hours of new content, and if you’re really looking for more Fable to play it’s worth considering.
