Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse - Episode 3: They Stole Max's

By ssj12 07th Jul 2010 | 2,293 views

Sam & Max's epic adventure continues

Telltale Games has released their third chapter to the latest Sam & Max story arc; Sam & Max 303: They Stole Max's Brain! In this episode, we help Sam discover who took Max’s brain while learning about that tyrannical little scamp of a ruler, Pharaoh Sammun-Mak.

Sam & Max 303: They Stole Max's Brain!’s story has three exciting chapters totally roughly five hours of playtime. The first part revolves around finding out what actually happened to Max’s brain. This part also introduces the new interrogation chat mechanic that unlocks different chat dialogs throughout a conversation. The second involves the most shocking of villainous of pairings. The third episode chapter is probably the most unique part of the game, but easily spoiled. The story grips you tightly, and doesn't let go until the end credits roll.

The controls are, for the most part, the same as those of the previous two episodes. However, there is a very annoying glitch when using Max’s future vision ability. When it is activated, the camera decides to stick then rotate in which ever direction you were originally steering the camera. It is quite annoying because the only way to stop the rotation is to exit future vision. It's a shame that this glitch was not caught during testing, because it is irritating to say the least.

Graphically, there is no visual difference between any of Season 3’s episodes at all; with graphics maxed out to 9 everything looks great. Of course, Season 3's graphical quality puts that of the other seasons to shame. The only thing that is a slight bother is the random pop-in of characters that have left the scene. It’s rather odd: these character models appear and can be fully interacted with as if they never left the scene at all.

The audio is again a different story. Like in the Penal Zone episode audio levels aren’t completely balanced. There are some high and low spots during conversations with NPCs. Since there are tons of NPCs to interact with this time around, be prepared to have your hand on your audio controls quite often if you want to hear every piece of dialog.

Sixty percent of The Devil’s Playhouse story is now complete, and I must say, things are getting good. Story alone makes this season well worth its price tag. Any and all bugs found in the last three chapters are minor, and this makes it relatively easy to forgive Telltale Games for their oversight. Whether you're playing these games on the PSN or PC, be prepared for an amazing experience that will have you on the edge of your seat till the final moments of chapter five. If you love adventure or puzzle games, place Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse on top of your list of future purchases.
