The Japan Preview: 11/13/11 Edition (Hatsune Miku, Sengoku Basara 3 U) - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 13 November 2011 / 6,466 ViewsSoftware sales in Japan were down a bit from last week as several major releases had pretty big week one to week two drops. Nonetheless, new releases were nearly able to offset the declines of the previous week, and so once again the top 20 games in Japan sold around 900,000 - 1,000,000 units for the week.
1) Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend (PSP) - 270,000
2) Sengoku Basara 3 Utage (PS3) - 126,000
3) Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke (PSP) - 85,000
4) Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) - 82,000
5) Pokepark 2 (Wii) - 57,000
6) Final Fantasy Type-0 (PSP) - 50,000
7) Sengoku Basara 3 Utage (Wii) - 43,000
8) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition (PS3) - 41,000
9) Kirby's Return to Dreamland (Wii) - 37,000
10) Uncharted 3 (PS3) - 27,000
12) Battlefield 3 (PS3) - 20,000
12) Just Dance Wii (Wii) - 20,000
13) World Soccer Winning Eleven 2012 (PSP) - 16,000
14) Go Vacation (Wii) - 14,000
15) World Soccer Winning Eleven 2012 (PS3) - 8,000
In addition to the games above, Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Dragon Quest Slime (3DS), Rhythm Heaven (Wii), Battlefield 3 (X360), and Idolmaster 2 (PS3) should be in the final top 20 data.
Seasonality is slowly starting to engulf the Japanese market. As the market continues to heat up, a growing number of games will sell 50,000, 20,000 and 10,000 units per week filtering those thresholds deeper into the top 50. Already we're at a fairly high point, as its rather rare to see over 10 titles top 20,000 units in Japan, and its certainly rare to see six titles over 50,000 units in a week. That said, 14 games over 10,000 units is pretty common - so we're not quite in a full-on holiday structure yet for the Japanese top-sellers.
As far as the releases themselves, Hatsune Miku slightly outperformed the week one sales of the previous game, but should drop off a bit faster and end up with a similar total lifetime. The new edition of Sengoku Basara 3 opened at about the ratio of the PS3 game to the Wii game over the course of their lifetime sales, even though the first Sengoku Basara 3 opened up at almost 5:1 in favor of PS3 rather than 3:1.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition did not perform nearly as well on PS3 as the previous PSP to PS3 experiment, Monster Hunter, although the ratio of performance was actually strikingly similar. Monster Hunter Portable 3 on PSP did 1.95m week one, the HD version on PS3 did 290k week one, while Peace Walker opened to 400,000+ on PSP and 40,000+ on PS3 (as an 'HD' edition) - essentially only 10-13% of the PSP audience seems open to playing the same game with better graphics on PS3.
Pokepark 2 opened similarly to the first game and should end up selling at least 200,000 units in Japan. Other recent Wii games joined Pokepark 2 & Sengoku Basara 3 in selling fairly well, as Just Dance, Go Vacation, and Kirby are declining slowly now. Super Mario 3D Land declined a bit quicker than expected, but that might be a shortage issue in the preliminary data that won't show up in the final data.
Wii, PSP and PS3 should each be a up a bit this week on the volume of content that has come out this week and in previous weeks.
Looking ahead, Final Fantasy XIII-2 continues to fall farther and farther behind the preorder pace of Final Fantasy XIII. Final Fantasy XIII-2 now has 180,000 preorders through November 13, ahead of a December 15, 2011 release. Final Fantasy XIII had 675,000 preorders through November 15, 2009 ahead of a December 17, 2009 release. Mario Kart 7 for 3DS now has 95,000 preorders, up about 20,000 from last week. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii) has 80,000 preorders 10 days ahead of release, its increasing faster than it looked like it would last week - and should get to 95,000 - 120,000 preorders for a launch week of 150,000 - 300,000 units. Monster Hunter Portable 3G (3DS) has 270,000 preorders now ahead of its December 13 release, and preorders have been increasing steadily at 30,000-40,000 per week. Preorders could easily reach 350,000-400,000 units ahead of launch, for a week one anywhere between 500,000 - 800,000 units. Call of Duty launches next week (Nov 17) in Japan, and should open to slightly larger than normal Japanese Call of Duty numbers - anywhere from 140,000 - 200,000 units week one between the PS3 & X360 versions. Uncharted and Hotshots Golf 6 for Vita also each have about 20,000 preorders about five weeks out from the Vita launch.

So Uncharted 3 basically outsold Uncharted 2 with 2 weeks in japan, not bad :D
It's fantastic! =D
With those numbers, Mario 3D should already be the second best selling 3DS game in Japan. Of course, its reign of #1 will only last until Monster Hunter rolls out.
mgs peace walker is awesome, but mgs2/mgs3 are better.
uncharted 3 - amazing for japan.
final fantasy type-0 is holding up pretty well
love the 3:1 and 5:1 spin there.
Type-0 is showing some nice legs..and this is without considering digital sales of the game, especially with vita about to launch I would assume those sales should be pretty good as well
I say 250k FW for Modern Warfare 3.
Okay-ish hold for Mario.
Zelda :/
Ni no Kuni is unfortunately gonna flop, it seems. This comment needs to be voted down.
ff13-2 will be the worst selling mainline FF in Japan. Back to FF13 ;levels
What about FFXIV?
I meant back to FF2 Levels. I don't really count an MMO as a mainline FF, Call me crazy lol
FF XIII-2 isn't mainline ...
