Where do Vita and 3DS Stand After TGS? - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 16 September 2011 / 9,657 Views

Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita were definitely the stars of the show at this year's Tokyo Game Show. Despite what Nintendo and Sony may claim, the dedicated handhelds do definitely seem to be competing with each other for your hardcore portable gaming dollars. While they were going head to head at E3, the question of software for the PlayStation Vita still remained. The Nintendo 3DS definitely had a bit of a surprise up its sleeve for TGS this year, although it was not exactly a well received one. Now that we've got more insight into both of these handhelds, where do they stand in the light of each others' presence?

Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Ever since its initial reveal in January, we've had a sneak peak at some of the Vita's titles. E3 better solidified these releases, with more complete builds and a handful of new software. But that early on, it's always hard to tell exactly what will and won't be in the near future. Now, we have the launch list of titles in Japan that we can  start speculating on exactly what will be available on the platform at launch in Western regions as well. Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are probably good bets, as well as a few other titles that were included on the release list. Just the addition of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, as long it turns out to be a quality release, already seemingly puts the platform in a better position against 3DS' launch line-up.

The Nintendo 3DS' launch line-up, however, has long passed. The Nintendo 3DS is finally starting to pick up from software perspective, with at least Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land set to be hits worldwide. We also can't forget Monster Hunter 3G which will surely be a big hit in Japan. The Vita won't be launching until sometime in 2012, when even more 3DS software will be rolling out, like Luigi's Mansion and Kid Icarus: Uprising from Nintendo as well as third party titles like Resident Evil: Revelations and Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. These are some pretty big titles. It's sort of unfair compare the Vita and the 3DS since the Vita is just launching, but this is the kind of competition the platform will be faced against right out the gate.

Nintendo 3DS Slide Pad Add-On

Nintendo definitely has a software advantage, but on the hardware side the platform is a bit shaky. Along with the recent price cut, the slide pad accessory shows that Nintendo simply didn't make good choices when planning the launch of their hand held. The second circle pad accessory this early on almost shows a lack of consideration on Nintendo's part. Now it's pretty obvious a redesign with a second circle pad will most likely be in the pipeline, but we'll have to wait and see when that emerges. If the rumors that were attached the second circle pad are also true, Nintendo will be throwing the 3D feature to the side as an after thought, which leaves the question of what makes the 3DS unique without it.

Without it on the market, it's hard to say what the Vita may or may not be missing. Considering how much is packed into the Vita, it might be more of a matter of what may or may not even be used in the years down the line. That's a good thing though. The Vita is, as it looked to be at E3, a solid piece of hardware. The battery life sounds to be a pain, but that seems almost natural at this point with current handheld devices.

While Vita as a piece of hardware still seems to hold more value, even with a higher price point, software sells hardware. The announcement of Monster Hunter 4 for 3DS in Japan definitely is something for Sony to be concerned about in their home turf, considering the franchise was so popular on the PlayStation Portable. While Uncharted is bound to stir up the water at least a little bit at launch, it's hard to say if that will be able to compete with Nintendo's line-up, especially as we move into 2012.

As much as I love Vita's line up, I gotta say... They're line up doesn't seem quite appealing to the Japanese market and to add to that, the netting of MH4 for the 3DS might make Vita limp on making a core userbase in Japan.

Monster Hunter IS big in Japan and proved to be the biggest selling title for the PSP in that region. Now if MH4 in on 3DS and couple that with high selling franchises of Nintendo, and you're up against a big fort there.

As of now I see 3DS doing extremely well in Japan in the foreseeable future with Vita trying it's best to topple it down with new IPs. For me it seems like Vita just lost a great chunk of potential marketshare in Japan.

I gotta say well played Nintendo.

I love how everybody bashed the 3DS battery life but now that the PSV has about the same amount, they brush it aside and say its to be expected from handhelds this generation.

The 3DS has the same graphics as the DS, only now you can ad a 3rd dimension. The PSV is way better, you can even play Killzone 3 via remote play. If Nintendo keeps the same tempo it will have it's first HD handheld in 2023.

LOL @ JackyGoal. Are you joking? Do you have any idea how ignorant you are? It does not take a keen eye to tell the difference between the graphical power of the DS (which matches the n64) and the 3DS (Which is closer to the Wii).

The PSV is a lot more powerful than the 3DS, so it obviously will use more battery. The fact that it's battery life is about the same as the 3DS' is a good point for it.

Jacky has a right to his opinion like everyone else. For example I for one don't see that much of a siginificant diffrence between the 3DS and Vita esp with such small screens. There is a diffrence but not $100 worth of difference!!! Maybe it's like comparing PS2 and the original Xbox difference (my opinion). Also when it all comes down to it's all about content.

Its possible, the main model will obviously continue to support 3D but for a fair portion of the market 3D isn't that enticing. 3D is optional (hence the slider), it is not required to play any games, so a 2D model of the system wouldn't split the market. It would also be cheaper and i imagine a year or so from now we will see a $129 2DS, it has the potential to sell alot of units.

  • -1
kutabacchimae (on 17 September 2011)

One thing I am curious of now: if the PSV is basically a portable PS3 and is sharing part of it's library, will the games be $60 each like PS3? If that's the case, will ppl skip it when they see a higher price for the system followed by games that are 150% the price of the 3DS games? Especially if those ppl already have PS3s they can buy the same games for the same price and play them on a bigger screen.

Since TGS is about Japan then this should be about how they now stand in Japan. 7 days before Vita launches in Japan Monster Hunter Tri G will be released on the 3DS. Nintendo has control to every multi million franchise in Japan. 2D Mario, Pokemon, Dragon Quest, and Now Monster Hunter. Uncharted is a great west game, but does nothing for the east. The same goes for every game the have as a launch title. 280 to 330 Vita remember you will need to buy a memory card with no big Japanese game. Versus a cheaper 3DS with Monster Hunter, Mario Kart, New Love PLus, and a New Mario game this year. This is going to be a slaughter!

accoarding my tastes (only):

PSV has Little King's Story, Final Fantasy and a few Sony games like Little Big Planet (for the time being)
in hardware, the combination of motion controls, touch screen and the touch on back impressed me, graphics are awesome but we've seen them before on the Ps3/Xbox360/PC

on the other hand,

3DS has Zelda, Mario, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Pokemon (soon or late), Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Tekken and a hell of other 1st/3rd games I like
in hardware, it's currently the only 3D vision I have access to (apart from cinema), also combines motion control and touch screen, 3D video capture must be good

so, for the time being, It's something like 75% 3DS for me

  • +9
DonFerrari dark_gh0st_b0y (on 16 September 2011)

Tekken and Monster Hunter are multiplatform. MH4 might not be but you can put any money down that there will be a MH on Vita.

You forgot:
Zone of the Enders Collection
MGS Collection
Killzone
Resistance
Marvel vs Capcom 3
Street Fighter x Tekken
Bioshock
Call of Duty
Assassin's Creed
Uncharted

That there alone tips the balance into Vita's advantage. While you mentioned the big name games for Nintendo, there are no such games yet. Motion control and touch screen is in Vita as well.

  • 0
uselessDM (on 16 September 2011)

The pricecut was definitly a good decision and the 3DS has already sold a substantial number of devices, so the sells of the PSV must be really strong to pick up with that, what seems not very likely but possible.
But the redesign of the 3DS with two pads will be difficult if you take in account how large the accessery is and that it adds two more large shoulder buttons. I don't know where they should put all these things without changing the device massively.
And they could support the 3D feature if they bring more 3D videos to the 3DS like it was rumoured before the release.

  • +7
Joelcool7 (on 17 September 2011)

Yah the whole thing about ditching 3D, Aonuma already mentioned that the next Zelda game will use 3D to its full extent and it will really make the game. So considering this next Zelda game is at least a year or so away it really proves 3D will not be dropped.

Of course I think a cheaper 3D free model could be released in the future. But it won't replace 3DS and it won't be the re-model were all waiting for.

Sony is going to have a very hard time launching Vita for the same price as 3DS, same period of the year (Early 2012) missing the holidays and with a stellar yet inferior software line-up. Its like they saw Nintendo dive bomb and decided to try the exact same thing with their hardware.

Being able to take a game from a console to a portable is quite a neat feat. But you have a point, it lacks originality, the Vita needs dedicated portable games and games which you can play in short bursts.

What good are those fancy graphics if 3 hours or so into my trip (away from an outlet) I'm out of juice ? Thats not just some afterthought or minor issue to me. It makes those devices downright useless in some scenarios. I for once am not looking for a portable PS3, not with a pricetag like I assume the Vita will carry. If I want fancy graphics I know where to get them.
The PSP had some great games but most of them were not designed with portability in mind. They needed close attention and weren't suited for some quick 5 mins or so sessions while waiting in a line or something like that.
As far as portable is concerned from what I gather so far, I stick with my NDSi (+batterypack) for better and worse and with my iPhone (also not big on battery life while gaming but at least I'm carrying it with me anyways so ...).

Vita is a big letdown, I expected much much better... Sony is actually doing all that 3DS was criticized for : unambitious launch titles, remakes and games that haven't a name yet announced far too early. 3DS upcoming games for 2012 a far more exciting imo. And Sony has already lost the battle the second they let Monster Hunter and Hatsune Miku go to the competition. They did a poor job, really... I yet the VITA booth is crowded like no other (I was at TGS today)

  • +3
Monteblanco (on 19 September 2011)

I gave up on the 3DS (I hate 3D and I find the screen too small) and I might get a Vita. That said, I am not particularly excited by the Vita line up. Sony seems to be committing the same mistake they did with the PSP releasing a lot of games that would be much better at a TV set. Also, a lot of HD remakes of PS2 games don't help much, especially because they are not real remakes like 3DS's Zelda and FireFox, games that were recreated from zero but rather a HD rendering of an old game. Finally, from the point of view of the Japanese market, which was the point of the TGS's presentations, Vita doesn't have much whereas Nintendo announced several key games, especially MH4, which will be a great hit.

"While Vita as a piece of hardware still seems to hold more value, even with a higher price point, software sells hardware."

Sums the entire situation up. It's the DS and the PSP all over again. Remember when people were SO excited when they thought Sony would beat Nintendo's handheld, by having the system with superior graphical and hardware potential? It never works. Seriously. Take a quick look back. There are no examples of it not being true. Look at the one time Sony is said to have beat Nintendo, which would be the PS2 / Gamecube era. Sony released first, and thus, pinned Nintendo into the corner that THEY are usually pinned in, where, because they aren't releasing first, they have to create a system with better hardware. It wouldn't make sense to release something that is inferior in every way to something that is already out. When a system has been out for months before its competition, it builds up a game library and a reputation. Now, think about this in relevance to how I explained that companies don't create superior hardware because they WANT to and they think it will give them the edge, they do it because they're FORCED to because they didn't release their system first. These infinitesimal hardware differences are designed to attract people who think that they're "informed consumers" by knowing the exact capabilities of their system in relevance to the competition. Really, it's just to keep them thinking that they're getting something better. They're not. Ultimately, whatever system releases first will have to capitalize on game library, while whatever releases after that will have to capitalize on hardware, which usually tends to wind up as unused potential anyway. Just look at the PS3. lol. Do you think most games take advantage of its hardware to the fullest? Haha, no. I know people will call me a Nintendo fanboy or something for posting this. I'm not. When Sony did the correct thing for once and released first, and secured their spot as the company that owned the VIDEO GAME system of that generation, I found their system to be the best. I'm a "Whatever is released first" fanboy. Because I like video games.

You seem the be the one ignoring the factors as you, yourself, said that the most important factor was who released first.
Was Sega in debt when they released the Genesis before the SNES?
And why has the Wii sold more units if it was the last one to be released?

It was released 3 days after the PS3. You really have no point. You're blatantly ignoring the importance of releasing first and pretending that it's not a factor at all. It is. It's quite obvious that MH will go to PSV too, its dev and publisher aren't here to help any of the competing portables, but to make money, and both platforms can give the game huge sales.
It's also undeniable that Ninty owns the biggest franchises ever, but also that it managed clumsily that second stick issue, aiming to the hardcores too with 3DS, it should have been there from the start, just like Wii should have had WM Plus capabilities built-in from the start too.
This said, I'm very curious about Sony's bizarre staggered launch for PSV, it looks like a half suicide, what's its purpose?

to appeal to some people who had the bad habit of using two sticks in video games. to appeal Konami as MGS 3 was playable with two sticks and some people were like "it's unplayable with one stick fuck you MGS 3 3D!" or "Monster Hunter isn't playable with a single stick" damn it is playable quite good enough on PSP.

Sure, 3DS gets MH4 (I'm sure Vita will get it eventually as well), but everything else on 3DS is looking to be the same old that Nintendo throws our way with every platform. Mario, Mario Kart, LoZ, etc.. Great games, but they get old after a while. I'd rather play a new IP than Mario Kart 7. The name alone is ridiculous.

The situation hasn't changed much IMO. The people who love the PSP will love the Vita. The people who are indifferent about the name brand will not buy Vita on release. The people who don't like the PSP right now will most likely stick to a 3DS. The new price point of the 3DS fits the normal consumer base a little better though, we'll see how SONY reacts a few months after release if, and only if, the Vita fails to meet their sales target goal.

The comment section feels like Gamespot where anything positive about the ps3 gets downvoted and anything positive about 360 thumbs up. It's kind of ridiculous. I would hate it if it was the other way around too.

well ninty is still disappointing with 3ds and sony is crazy for not releasing vita in dec. here aswell but i think there looking to do one hell of n ad campaign so vita wins for me anyway mainly because more then 80 games available through the launch window which can't be touched

a 3DS with built in 2 sticks is pointless.why?
_No need to play with two sticks, do you guys need two penis to satisfy your girlfriend? the control scheme is great like that, all games are playable with one. it was on PSP, heh. I feel it's mostly people with big hands or sheeps really finding that 2nd stick useful.

_If you put the two sticks directly on the 3DS, you forget the additional trigger.

_Pssst! that accessory makes 3DS looks like a WiiU controller! it wouldn't anymore if 3DS get all these built in! 3DS to be used as WiiU pads?

Just don't forget that the TGS is for Japan release in December 17 and for Worldwide release you can expect more games and ones that may interest western gamers a lot more...

And more than that, Japan basically been keeping PSP alive all by itself, so if they do good release there (were the 3DS were strugling a lot) even if their debut WW isn't so great the system may be viable even so.

PSV will launch this year. It was already reported in this same website.

According to real sources, it's slated for December 17 in Japan, with the rest of the world getting it next year. So for all intents and purposes, it's really getting a 2012 release.

DonFerrari sirroman (on 16 September 2011)

And more than that December 17 for all effect of the article can be almost considered next year even in Japan. it will have what? 1,5 weeks to sell in 2011.

Guys, if you were wise you would stop saying ANYTHING negative about Nintendo because this place is just full of fanboys. The 3DS currently blows, that's coming from someone who owns one and will be buying a Vita when the time comes.

Considering what he said was without bias, I doubt anybody's going to be saying anything.
