The 15 Best Selling PlayStation Games of All Time - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 12 September 2010 / 31,132 ViewsSeptember 9 represents the 15 year anniversary of the original PlayStation released in North America. Included below are the top 15 games sold for any PlayStation system in ascending order from least successful worldwide to most successful. Units in millions sold worldwide.

In last place, Crash Bandicoot. The first installment of the Crash Bandicoot series.

Next to last, Tekken 3. This installment changed the movement for each character from Tekken 2, reducing the jump height and adding focus to the third axis.

13. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (PS) 7.12
A direct sequel from Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. Featuring Crash and Coco as they travel back in time.

12. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (PS) 7.57
The third Naughty Dog presentation on our list. Crash is again abducted by Dr. Neo Cortex and crash must keep the planet from being destroyed.

11. Final Fantasy VIII: (PS) 7.86
The first Final Fantasy title to consistently use realistically proportioned characters.

10. Final Fantasy X: (PS2) 7.95
This installment of Final Fantasy featured for the first time fully 3-D areas, voice acting, a new Conditional Turn Based Battle system, and a new Sphere Grid leveling system.

9. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: (PS3) 8.52
A direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, following the same storyline.

The least popular Gran Turismo title on our list, this sequel offered more cars (650) than any other game at the time.

7. Final Fantasy VII: (PS) 9.72
This was the first Final Fantasy in the series to use fully 3-D modeled characters against pre-rendered backgrounds. Originally developed for the SNES, Final Fantasy in later developments of the game required more storage capacity, which was available on the PlayStation.

6. Gran Turismo 4: (PS2) 10.56
One of only two titles on the PlayStation 2 to offer 1080i output. The other is Tourist Trophy, also by Polyphony. The game features 700 cars ranging from the 1886 Daimler Motor Carriage to concept cars slated for 2022 development.

This Racing Sim spawned over 10 spin-offs and sequels and took over 5 years to develop.

4. Grand Theft Auto III: 11.60
The first 3-D title in the Grand Theft Auto series.

3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: (PS2) 14.20
A sandbox style game which borrows from many different styles of game to create a large world in which the user has a lot of control over their experience.

2. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec: (PS2) 14.89
Released early in the PlayStation 2's lifetime, the number of cars were limited from the game to make room for graphics and audio improvements. New to the game, unlicensed versions of Formula One cars were available to unlock.

1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: (PS2) 18.43
Our winner! No doubt owing much of the game's commercial success to the outcry over the "Hot Coffee" sex minigame, causing the game briefly to be rated for Adults Only and pulled from U.S. shelves only to be re-issued a 'Mature' rating.

for fucks sake you retarded fucking 360 butthurt fanboys need to learn how to read, "best selling playstation games of all time" where in that title does it say exclusive WHERE, also when looking at this Gran Turismo is not multiplat "only on playstation" MW2 was also on PC and your point is ???, time to face fact's the playstation brand is the most successful console brand in the history of video games and nothing a 360 Wii or PC fanboy can say will ever change that.
now what if this FANBOY driven site decided to make lists for top selling xbox games, Wii games or PC games none of the lists would contain purely exclusive games especially the 360 as its top seller is MW2.
happy birthday ps one to all the the haters out there i'll always thank them 4 respecting the fact i want a mature adult gaming experience, we wouldn't be playing these awesome games if they didn't push visual mature storyline content.
mentioning a few of the hits
tomb raider, resident evil 1&2, metal gear solid, soul reaver, rival schools, ff7, loads of soccer games, loads of competing driving games- destruction derby, wipeout(ps3as well) twisted metal (ps3as well) gt series thanks sony for giving developers a true platform to grow and formulate ideas. The reason i still play games today is becasue sony had the balls to let developers makes the games they wanted and we are all seeing the benefit of that now. (whether u have an xbox, wii or ps3 dn't hate on the achievements of the ps one) happy birthday!
I think GTA San Andreas didn't get its number 1 status because of "Hot Coffee". The game was out and a huge mega hit long before that info came out. In fact, if I recall, they had to recall a lot of copies of GTA: SA because of the outcry that came from the Hot Coffee mod. I had an Action Replay and I didn't even bother to look for those polygon boobies--and I'm a huge fan of polygon boobies!! Not quite sure about that AO rating, either. I'm gonna have to look that one up.....
@ChichiriMuyu
Vivendi is not a part of Activision Blizzard. Rather, Activision Blizzard is owned by Vivendi (Vivendi is much, much larger than just Activision Blizzard).
Just wanted to clear that up. :)
Modern Warfare 2 is the odd one out.
If you notice that 4 of those best all time selling PS franchises went multiplatform.....Sony wanna know why you're so behind in the races this generation???? It's pretty clear. You let some of your best exclusives go to the other platform!!! Had you done whatever it takes to keep them, people would have been forced to buy your console to get those experiences...same for all the other exclusives you let slip. Not sure what your business model/strategy is anymore, but it's clear that it's not working. Sad really.
Top 15 games but only 5 franchises. Modern Warfare 2 ruins it buy being on it's own and only one from this gen...what was 16th?
I do like Crash 2 being the best sold Crash game, love it more then the other.
@spdk 1
Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII came out on PC as well.
The PC versions are the ones I originally played
lol Most of them are Multiplats and remaining are from non first party of sony
only a few games were multiplatform att he time, Tekken, final fantasy, crash, and GTA used to be PS exclusive
Hmm...I count 7 games in this list that aren't even PlayStation games.
lol 37.4... the next finnancial reports will be very interesting , lol
when is this site gonna get its sales figures sorted out cause the ps3 has sold over 38.1 million consoles and only this site is saying 37.4, and that 38.1 was officially confirmed 2 months ago lol.
@Salnax fair enough.
@Genera1MLD I don't give a damn about Halo, the XBox, or Bill Gates's ass. I was just noting when the more popular PS games were released. As for the 2000 bit, my exact phrasing was "games for systems made since 2000," 2000 being when the PS2 was released. I'm not trying to bash the PS3 here.
@chichiri
What are you talking about? Naughty Dog has been a first-party studio since after 2001! They are a subsidiary of Sony Corporation so they can do whatever they want...
@ Salnax: hang on dont get all confused, for a start the list is clearly marked as the best selling "playstation games" (no where does it say exclusives), and you can take your dik out of bill gates as, add up all of the sales of the halo games and try to match the sales of all the GT games (no contest GT has sold way more) or what about gears of war (again its no contest) forget forza what's really funny about that series of games is that forza 2 has sold more than forza 3 (forza 2 has sold just over 4 million and forza 3 just under 3 million) now compare that to GT 3 A Spec's 14.89 million (hell even halo 3 hasnt sold as much as that @ just over 11 million).
really this whole argument about better graphics, online, better exclusives ect is just complete garbage the only games that sell the 360 are halo and gears of war, obviously forza doesnt sell the console nore does Mass Effect 2 as ME2 is comming to PS3 early next year, the games that sell the PS3 are more varied such as MGS4, Uncharted 1&2, killzone 2, LBP, GT5P (that also out sold forza 3) and the new games comming out in the next few months GT5 and LBP2, all the 360 has to look forward to is a 5 month wait after Halo Reach for Gears Of War 3 in april next year.
Looks like Microsoft really underestimated what true gamers want this Xmass and next year "Games" instead you get Kinect and Fable 3 to keep you going (and Fable isnt as popular as FF is lol so expect only a few million to buy it (till the next Fable game comes out), at least "Sony" knows what "Gamers" want and that what were getting "Games" GT5, LBP2 (no short story that can be completed in a few hours like Halo).
Oh and lastly the "games from 2000" just shows how much of a blind 360 fanboy you are, Every PS2 game was made after 2000 i thought that would have been a bit obvious to you but then again you do come accross as quite a dumbass.
Crash 2 was the best selling Crash game!? I'm a Warped fan! I saw that jet-ski scene running on a demo PS1 at Best Buy and bought it that second. It was mind-blowingly beautiful, at the time.
I find it funny that SE and "modern gamers" are pushing for change in RPG conventions and the abandon of turn-based system, yet there hasn't been a massive hit since FFX. Just goes to show that the VOCAL majority of RPG gamers dislike traditional RPGs, not the ACTUAL majority.
PS - anyone who has a Wii and likes traditional RPGs should check out Arc Rise Fantasia. Closest thing I've played to traditional on a console since Enchanted Arms. Fun!!!
I heard that Naughty Dogs left the franchise cause they wanted to do something fresh (Jak and Daxter). If they would had stuck with it and made more Crash both Sony and Universal Interactive Studios would be dumb not to let them.
@ Mundus6
Crash was never owned by Sony. It was developed by Naughty Dog which now has close relationship to Sony, but it was produced and owned by Universal Interactive Studios (later Vivendi, which passed it to Sierra, both of which are now part of Activision Blizzard). Sony has no claim over the series at all these days, mostly because they really had no claim on it to begin with.
I was really hoping to see just PS1. Oh well, had by a slightly ambiguous title once again.
And GT5 will continue the success story...
@TheFlyingDutchman I didn't mean to be biased against the PS3. I'm more of a DS fan than anything. I was just reading through the list, and thought to myself "Say... where are the games for systems made since 2000?"
GTA IV can't be far away
This says to me that i think its time sony polishes up crash bandicoot again and revives the series
Why did they sell the Crash franchise? Only them and GT thats first party...
I've played/finished Tekken 3 and Crash 1 & 2. Haven't owned any of them. They are the best selling PS games, but none of them are my favourites. I guess that shows the diversity of PS games that there are a lot of people whose favourite PS games don't feature on an all time best sellers list.
And who cares no PS3 exclusives in the top 15? I'm surprised any game on PS3 is in the top 15 all things considered. having one in the top 10 is pretty impressive.
@ Salnax: AHUM! Obvious you have more love for the 360 then for the PS-brand (= understatement).
The PlayStation (1) and PlayStation 2 are way over their top, the PS3 is still climbing to his top.
And the PSP(-sales) is heavily pirated.
Funny that you say it lacks PSP and PS3-exclusives.
A similar XBox-list would show only 360-games, because MS hasn't got a handheld and the original xbox sold so bad that the people counting fell asleep.
Ah wait ... the orinal xbox didn't sell that bad you say?
Ohh now I remember ... The PlayStation (1) and the Playstation 2 sold incredibly well.
PS 102.5 million, PS2 137 million, PS3 37.4 million --> 40% of PS1 sales, 28% of PS2 sales
Xbox 24.65 million, x360 42.89 million --> approx. 170% of xbox sales
I still can't believe Crash sold so well. I remember all of the as average games, a bit overrated for those Sony fanboys who still believed a console should have a mascot to be worth it, allas Sonic and Mario.
lol final fantasy 7 in 7th
Dam crash sold so well ... :S what ever happened to him :S
Vice City fans Unite!
Also was that hot coffee thing on the PS2? I would have thought it was PC only, though tbh why anyone would want to look I don't know, the character models in GTA are horrid.
That is true oniyide. And for the record, nobody was hating. We're just pointing out a fact.
i didnt think Gran Turismo was that popular and all you hating, give me a break. It seems that GT is all Sony needs and more than half the games are stll console exclusive. If you did an MS list I bet it would be mostly multiplats too. Nintendo is the only one that could fill a list with just their games
@ PhantomLink
LOL
Vice City is the best in series hands down!
Only six franchises in that whole list...
Funny how Final Fantasy VII is numer 7
@Salnax, if you want to get technical, EVERY franchise in that top 15 that isn't Gran Turismo is multi-plat. Go figure.
I think FF7 could be at 11 mil, because of the international edition and PC release - not including the PSN rerelease!
@dunno0001: yeah that's weird, I wonder how other consoles lists will look (assuming VGChartz makes MS & N versions)
and no PSP games?
And San Andreas is STILL selling!
@Siko1989 yea 100% agreed they need to buy crash and make crash games like in days of ps1
crash is trash these days.
Note the lack of PSP games and PS3 exclusives. Also note that numbers 1, 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, and 14 were from exclusive franchises back in the day, but are now shared with the 360.
In a way, this list explains the 3rd place situation quite well.
A surprisingly... non-diverse list. 13 of the 15 games fall into only 4 franchises.
yep, i own/ed every game on this list. very good games indeed. at the time i guess i didn't realize that they were all going to be best sellers. it goes to show i have good taste in games (good to know).
@Siko It won't be possible. The Crash Bandicoot IP was bought out by either Activision or Vivendi [I forgot, can someone clarify?]
Almost half of this list is Gran Turismo!!
I own all of these except GT4 and MW2!
Woo GTA:SA got #1......well deserved!
im not a sony fan or anything but i think Crash needs to be made by Naughty Dog again, they made the series into a masterpiece, the devs that are making it these days doesn't even try to make it good
Modern warfare 2 sold more copies for the 360 than the ps3. interesting how it's on this list.
