Xbox Live Arcade Sales - Week Ending 1/26/07 - News

Hundreds of thousands accept Microsoft's 'Undertow' apology, while Uno, Boogie Bunnies, and Metal Slug 3 remain strong, despite the market dropping 50% from last week.
1/26/08 by Benjamin Schlichter
With the initial estimates coming in for Undertow, it seems that many took advantage of the freebie offer that Microsoft has offered gamers from Wednsday morning to Sunday night. Undertow took in an estimated 178,000 units downloaded since Wednsday. This compares ultra-favorably against other free titles first week's. Carcassonne, once offered free garnered 44,000 units activated in the first 3 days of it being offered.
Carcassonne, by the way wound up having around 325,000 downloads activated 1 month after the free offer. This would point to Undertow finishing with over 1,300,000 free downloads after the returns are in for the first month. This is quite a bit higher than my uneducated guess of 500,000-750,000 units by the end of the first month's activations.
In other news, most titles experienced huge drops from last week, as predicted. This would point to the random increase of titles last week being explained by the fact that the Xbox Live system was updated, and there was a rush of more data completing the sales figures from the previous weeks of issues. However, sales are still up around 60% from 2 weeks ago, indicating a stronger presence of XBL users downloading games for the first time.
Now the charts: notice I have included a counter for the # of days a specific title has been on the market for, and developer/publisher information for those wanting to tally dev/pub-specific sales.

Galaga, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Pinball FX to hit 250,000 within the next few weeks.
I doubt it'd break 500k in the next 18 months, but it could eventually if there were enough reasons to download and keep it - Spyglass Board Games has hit 100, and Soltrio has hit 70k - so there is a decent sized market for such kinds of games and chess is....Chess.
And look at Wii Chess: At $20 don't you expect it to do well?
No way Chess breaks 500k anytime soon.
Why would people who can play chess on Yahoo Games for free on their computer pay $10 to play it on their 360?
And chess is not casual like Uno, nor is it trendy like Texas Hold'em.
Slime - Yes, Gauntlet has that many units or more, most likely.
I have no idea exactly how the matchmaking works through the Arcade games. It exists, and you can play online, but I am unsure how it works.
Mik - XBL is a casual heaven - the top 3 downloaded games (pay-for) are Uno, Texas Hold'Em, and Geometry Wars. Think about that - 2 casual card games, and a revamped classic coin-op game.
Chessmaster is supposedly coming out next week - I have this feeling that it will be the next Uno. Chess is a huge casual hit on places like Yahoo Games, and various other places. Being able to play it via messanger, tons of modes, various set pieces, and the like could be a big draw. Could it be the first game to pass 500k for a $10 game with no strings attached (ie free downloads)? I think so.
Whoever developed Uno must be very happy i bet that game cost less then $100,000 to develop and had raked in $5,000,000 so far
Im glad the live arcade was successfull as it give smaller developers a chance to make some money
What, Gauntlet has sold a stunning 183,457 units through Xbox live? Is that really true?
Awesome.
Since it's a up to 4 player co-op, does anyone know how the matchmaking happens for an Arcade game like Gauntlet? Anyone played it co-op?
Another oldie I love is Xevious. Ah, those memories...
I guess people ARE downloading the free Undertow.
I've always included free download revenues in with the totals, but flagged them with asterisk marks and such.
Mroe than likely though, Chair Entertainment (Undertow's maker) is still getting a decent bit of cash per unit sold anyways.
Undertow is still free to download until Sunday night.
how could undertow make that much money when it was free to download? it was crap aswell.
you didn't put the totals
but I think over one million whit Undertow big sales ..
Wow , how the hell could that game sell so much ? :o Limited free games can do magic I guess :P
Undertow
is it for free ?!
Argh. I think there's a specific limit on the amount of data you can put into the News section - it was cutting off everything below Cyberball 2072, and stretching the numbers too far out. I had to delete the dev and day information.
If you want to see that info, goto www.xblacharts.com/weekly/12608.xhtml
I didn't put it into the news section merely because I don't really want to promote a website that isn't up and running :)
