PS3 hardware sales rise 30% following price cut - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 23 August 2009 / 23,787 Views

Sony finally announced the 120GB "PS3 Slim" last week at GamesCom for $299, but also announced an immediate price drop for the current 80GB PS3 model to the same price point. As expected, sales have increased this week but it is clear that many consumers are waiting for the new model before making the jump.

We have compiled our latest Americas hardware data for the week ending 22nd August and in the three days following the price cut, daily PS3 hardware saw around a 30% increase. Overall, sales are up a modest 12% week on week (and sales have been down significantly the last few weeks) - so maybe not as large a boost as many had expected. The reasons for this are twofold:

  1. Consumers are waiting for the new model PS3 which launches on September 1st
  2. Stocks of the existing model are starting to become quite low in the US - indeed the entire reason for the price cut is to get rid of the last of the stock to make way for the new model.

In those same three days, preorders for the slimline PS3 were actually greater than sales for the current PS3, with each day larger than the previous. If this pattern continues, preorders could top 60,000 in America alone by this time next week - suggesting a week one of around 100,000. The same week, Microsoft lowers the Elite price to $299 to match the slimline PS3. Recent Xbox 360 sales in the Americas have been around 60,000 so we expect PS3 to be ahead of 360 for a couple of weeks but it will be interesting to see where both consoles settle.

Similar increases have been seen across Europe, Japan and Other regions, but far bigger increases are expected in September when the new model arrives. We project that September sales worldwide will be around double that of August - around 600,000 units. This will be the first time in 2009 that Sony posts a year on year increase.

Stay tuned for the latest updates as we have them.

@Squaretie

What does 360 Elite pricing have to do with this thread?

  • 0
squaretie (on 25 August 2009)

At $300, I can finally afford an Xbox 360 Elite! This is awesome news.

Slim looks good, but I already have a 60GB -- games are OK. My buddy brings over his 360 and the games just look better somehow -- more crisp. I think the games must be developed for the xbox and then ported to ps3 or something.

@kowenicki

not as poor as xbox 360 barely above last years numbers despite being at $199 (I'm talking about weekly comparison to last year)

And with the exclusives and other great line up...we can see only sales exploding even above the expected mark during holidays

  • 0
GameAnalyser (on 24 August 2009)

the 30 % is for the existing console's low price demand..we can expect close to 75% when PS3 slim is released...Across Europe it is inevitable and US a small percentage will be added...In Certain territories across Asia too.

I'm glad to see Sony finally lowering the price and putting more pressure on MS and Ninty.

So are all the Sony fanboys who blindly denied the need for a PS3 price-cut now suddenly believers that price is king?

  • 0
JEDE3 (on 24 August 2009)

dearlord people have no common sense... a 30% increase with the announcement mid week? seriously think about that. It's not like games that get huge first day because it was only availble that day and after. No ps3's were availble 4 days before the announcement.

On top of all this it looks like they are suply constrained.

  • 0
crumas2 (on 24 August 2009)

It will be a good thing for Sony if they can flush out the queue before the Slim units hit. Otherwise they will take a bath on the existing units. From what I'm hearing, though, it sounds as if they're accomplishing it so far. Time will tell.

There were still a couple 80GB's and a couple of 160GB's at the closest Wal-Mart to my house. It was interesting that there were zero 360's in the case, they were totally wiped out. There were also a couple of Wii's (and Wii Fits!) in the case so who knows how many they actually had in stock of the Wii and PS3 since they can only fit so many in the cases.

  • 0
FKNetwork (on 24 August 2009)

Lot's of stock in the UK still, but then again the ps3 has been £229.99 for over a month now over here in some stores.

Sales not looking like they are going to be all that high for the slim, a boost then slightly higher than what ps3 has been for the last 6 months by the looks of it?

@CGI-Quality

Sorry, I must have been influenced by the Sony fanboys overreacted hype in my predictions.

  • 0
NeoRatt (on 24 August 2009)

I thought they were going to do better this week. I guess 80 Gb supply is really constrained...

On the weekend I saw tons of 160 Gb so that is definately not a problem.

As for September pre-orders... Sony has to be happy with that. The question is whether it continues or will it fade quickly. Either way, PS3 will be selling stronger. Amd it will be interesting to see how the holidays play out...

ioi has to be happy now... Sony's price drop should drive more vistitors to the site.

Xmas sales this year will be interesting.

  • 0
Slimebeast (on 24 August 2009)

I expect first week sales increase when Slim is actually released (fisrt week of Sept?) to be well over 100% up.

I expect NPD USA September to show 370-380,000 PS3s sold. Therefore, the worldwide number should be at least 900,000-1 million in the month of September alone if we include Japan and Europe (and rest of NA).

I predict that if VGC tracked numbers has Sept PS3 sales ww at just 600k - if defined as 5 weeks like NPD does - people will scream 'undertracked'.

  • 0
AkibaFan (on 24 August 2009)

@ioi

is PS3 slim gonna be supply constrained?

  • 0
rulo_rezn0r (on 24 August 2009)

This is what I expected, its pretty good,if we are realist, the economy is not that well right now, so people should stop saying the slim is gonna crush the wii and be number one, rising in sales 500% thats ridiculous

  • 0
ssj12 (on 24 August 2009)

actually this is probably due to lack of supplies. I've been out of PS3s at my WalMart for weeks.

  • 0
TheTruthHurts! (on 23 August 2009)

That is a great increase, and will probably only get better with time. People need to be realistic. An instant jump to 500k sold, or something outlandish like that is not going to happen.

There may even be a good chance that the new price point for the slim may only bump it above 360 weekly by 20k-30k until November/December.

World Wide gamers/consumers didn't immediately start shitting money, so that they could run out and buy a slim the minute it was announced. The WW economy is still.....rough to put it lightly.

The holidays will be very interesting.

  • 0
trestres (on 23 August 2009)

September will be a tough month for the Wii. No big releases and both its competitors having price cuts, and there's also Halo ODST coming out. I expect it to be the worst month of the year.

@typical gamer

It's a saleswebsite, guy. It's fun to predict sales. Wrong or right.

  • 0
typicalgamer (on 23 August 2009)

you people care too much about sales. just enjoy your frikin games.

  • 0
ramses01 (on 23 August 2009)

This is definitely a disappointing bump, depending on how supply constrained the PS3 is. Looks like those over-the-top predictions are going to miss the mark by a wide margin. If this trend holds, PS3 might win a few weeks in Sept, and then be back in third place for good once ODST launches.

How can you estimate what september sales would be without any data??

  • 0
atma998 (on 23 August 2009)

Only 600k units for September sales worldwide? That seems a little bit low. I predicted 740k.

  • 0

As to be expected.
Supply is drying up and there is a whole new, hyped up hardware revision just around the corner.

  • 0
Blackmoor (on 23 August 2009)

Honestly I think the "phat" PS3 is better. It's got that shiny black finish and the slik "playstation 3" on it. To me the Slim looks like a cheap piece of crap, that's the problem, you get what you pay for. I think Sony will do well with the sales. Looks promising

  • 0
binary solo (on 23 August 2009)

@ MonstaMack: So with the 360 selling 7/2/0.5 per week in your store do you think the price adjustment for the 360 will see an increase in sales overall, or will it just move that 0.5 into the Pro slot giving 360 a sales pattern of 7/2.5?

  • 0
makingmusic476 (on 23 August 2009)

"In those same three days, preorders for the slimline PS3 were actually greater than sales for the current PS3, with each day larger than the previous."

That is very surprising. At my store, we sold six ps3s last Wednesday, the last of our remaining stock. We thus far only have one Slim on reserve.

Granted, my store is rarely representative of the general market, but it's still strange to hear.

  • 0
Stefan.De.Machtige (on 23 August 2009)

@grey21

A 300% increase for 3 months? I don't think so.

  • 0
heruamon (on 23 August 2009)

This is about what I expected...a significant rise in sales, but nothing n a fanboy fantasy level...

  • 0
Grey21 (on 23 August 2009)

Honestly I expected a much bigger response but it could just be that most potential buyers haven't heared about the Slim yet. A 300% increase should be possible from September to the end of the year, after that maybe 200% but eventually I expect it to even out with 360 both selling 100-120K each month WW. Which is still good as it's know only reaches 60% of the 360's sales figures.

  • 0
ph4nt (on 23 August 2009)

nobody should complain about these sales.

A projected 100% increase for PS3 during the slims launch month is great, granted not as great as the fanboys were hoping it would be, but still good.

  • 0
MonstaMack (on 23 August 2009)

What's really gonna rot at our store is the Uncharted bundle. I included that number in the 3-4 a week and we hardly sell any of those (we usually only sold them when we were out of the cheaper PS3s) and they only dropped it to $399. We are sitting on close to a dozen with the slim coming out very shortly. Not good.

  • 0
MonstaMack (on 23 August 2009)

Sony played their cards well for supply. Over the last month we've gotten in very PS3s. Granted we didn't sell a lot but thats not the point - Sony didn't over saturate prior to the PS3 slim announcement.

I work at Wal-Mart in the largest store for my state. So we do the bulk of console selling and I get a very good idea for what sells and what doesn't.

On average we sell 7 arcades a week, 2 pros (when we have them) and one elite a week if we're lucky.

PS3's were about 3-4 a week and Wiis 15 or so a week as of late.

  • 0
dolemit3 (on 23 August 2009)

Why would anyone buy an inferior Phat when a much better model is coming next week?

  • 0
leo-j (on 23 August 2009)

30% still puts it well behind the 360 everywhere except japan..

  • 0
MonstaMack (on 23 August 2009)

So we won't know for sure the real effects to the slim is out. I figured as much.

Sales should till be tight if anyone is reading the internet for Microsoft as well considering the elite is not dropping till Sept 1st through some retailers.

At my Wal-Mart we didn't have any 80gig PS3s when the price dropped. I'm not sure if we are getting shipments of the older stock in the future as of yet.
