The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 and the PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

Yes, there was a PS5 shortage…but Switch 2 managed to maintain pace with PS5 during the month of December 2020. That is insane! (also, i can now comment in peace knowing that my posts won’t be getting downvoted. It’s a good day for VGChartz.)

I'm still shocked that the Switch 2 did this well despite the price. Where's everyone getting all the money to buy a Switch 2?! I didn't expect anyone earning minimum wage to be able to afford a Switch 2.

Most people who bought one so far probably earn more than minimum wage. And those on minimum wage may have decided to save up for it because they knew it was coming.

In any properly run country, wages keep increasing to offset inflation because otherwise people would be able to afford a lower amount of goods over time and that would hurt the economy greatly. So while Switch 2 launched at $450 as opposed to Switch 1's $300, when you adjust for inflation, Switch 1 did cost $393 of today's dollars back then, so Switch 2 isn't much more expensive for its time than Switch 1 was for its. A similar thing is true for games: A $60 game in 2017 is $78 in today's dollars. Which in turn means that $70 for Switch 2 games made games more affordable than they were back then, provided your wage increased at the same rate as inflation over the past eight years.

That's why people who understand that inflation exists and what inflation is aren't bothered by the prices of Switch 2 hardware and software.

While PS5 did have a shortage, this is still an impressive lead for Switch 2.
