Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - June 2025 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 05 August 2025 / 9,241 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 217,166 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 6,615,016 - Switch

Total Lead: 2,204,227 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 151,101,034

DS Total Sales: 153,305,261

June 2025 is the 100th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.22 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 6.62 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 2.20 million units.

The 100th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is June 2025, while for the DS it is February 2013. The Switch has sold 151.10 million units, while the DS sold 153.26 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 2.92 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

several years ago i predicted that the switch would be 3rd best sales all time and now it will be 2nd all time sometime later this year and thats were it will end up. one hell of a run!

From now on, the DS will be selling less than 100k per month, so even with Switch's price increase in the US and Canada in August, it will still keep a large month gap from the DS

Switch will still cross this landmark in this year (or fiscal year for sure), becoming the 2nd best selling system of all-time, but I do wonder with the price increase instead of any price drops that the PS2's crown will remain in place...

DS was selling 20k/week and Switch is selling 60k/week. At this pace Switch will need 55 weeks (more than a year) to overtake DS and 73 weeks to outsell DS lifetime sales. Switch sales are expected to drop a bit, though. But maybe it has one small holiday boost left.

DS will be passed this fiscal year, maybe even late this calendar year.
Not confident anymore Switch will pass PS2.

In your posts, you keep your hardware sales predictions pinned , with the Switch at 161 million units sold. Are you gonna change that?

Probably. Waiting a bit longer to change it. I don't like changing it several times a year or especially every other month.
This holiday season is sure to be the make it or break it for Switch surpassing PS2 in the long-term.

There’s a part of me that continues to say Switch overcoming the DS hardware sales is impossible, but I think I will find myself very invested at times in the first half of next year as sales information arrives.
It keeps trickling closer to happening, and that voice in my head that says it can’t happen is starting to experience more push back.

It will definetly pass the DS. It shipped 153.10 million units until June 30. Even if the Switch were discontinued at the end of the current year, it still has a regular quarter (July-September) and a holiday quarter (October-December). To pass the DS, the Switch needs less than 1 million units shipped, which eventually become sold units

What a run tbh, will become Nintendo's best selling system. It's nice to see such a widely succesful console in a time where you wonder where the industry is heading.
