The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

October 2023 is the 36th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 29,603 units.
In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.93 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 4.57 million units.
The PS5 has sold 14.45 million units in 35 months, while the PS4 sold 19.02 million units. Month 36 for the PS5 is October 2023 and for the PS4 is October 2016.
The PS4 crossed 20 million units sold in Europe in month 37, 30 million in month 51, and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 45.87 million units to date in Europe. The PS5 is 31.42 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.

I don't think PS5 will be able to close this gap unless it ends up having much longer legs than PS4, which is possible.
This gap will be difficult to close for Playstation 5, considering the PS4 basically always sold quite well in Europe. Even though PS5 had very good (global) sales this year so far, the gap only closed by 500k in Europe this year
I’m pretty sure the gap change is closer to 800k in the last 10 months, and the 2 biggest months are still to come.
I'm pretty sure is underestimated in The Americas as well.
Agree. I guess the gap will still be more than 3.5M in favor of PS4 after the next 2 months.
That would be an almost 2m change in one year though, and this gen feels like it’s only warming up and going to last at least 1 year longer.
