The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Switch.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

This will be a very interesting race to watch over the long term. It reminds me of the early years of Switch versus PS4.

PS4 got back into lead after the holidays. PS5 fails to do so. Let us see if post-holiday momentum is enough to close the gap.

Yeah I think it mostly depends on how many consoles Sony can consistently ship throughout the year.

In order for PS5 to close the gap before the holidays it has to sell an average of about 1.4M each month and an average of 320k every week. For the month of January the PS5 sold a little over 1.2M. The last week of January the PS5 sold almost 350k, though.

I guess PS5 has a better shot of skimming or slightly overcoming the Switch before it hits it's holiday season. It could be a close one, though I personally don't think it's going to quite happen.

PS5 is $500, Switch is $300. If Sony caught up, they would actually be bringing in 67 percent more revenue and selling a very expensive product in comparison.
