Pokemon Boosts Switch Sales, PS5 and XS are Even - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for Jan 23-29 - Sales

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console with 371,357 units sold for the week ending January 29, 2022, according to VGChartz estimates. The Switch has now sold an estimated 103.52 million units lifetime.
The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 140,940 units to bring its lifetime sales to 17.57 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 139,238 units to bring their lifetime sales to 12.34 million units.
PS5 sales compared to the same week for the PS4 in 2015 are down by nearly 19,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same week for the Xbox One are up by nearly 64,000 units. PS4 sold 159,694 units for the week ending January 24, 2015 and Xbox One sales were at 75,619 units.
The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 16,571 units, and the Xbox One sold 2,104 units.
Nintendo Switch sales compared to the same week a year ago are up by 15,620 units (4.4%), while the PlayStation 5 is down 38,798 (-21.6%) and the Xbox Series X|S is up 39,218 units (39.2%).
The PlayStation 4 is down 61,034 (-78.7%), the Xbox One is down 23,217 units (-91.7%).
Looking at sales week-on-week, Nintendo Switch sales are up by nearly 54,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are down by over 8,000 units, while Xbox Series X|S sales are flat.

these are crazy numbers for switch and xbox series s/x
Xbox is almost selling 80% more consoles this gen on a week by week basis (after holiday period) than it sold last gen. Last gen it ended up selling around 55 million consoles. At current rate, it is going to cross 80 million consoles sold, smoothly. PS5 will also sell around 90 to 100 million units, not PS4 level but still strong numbers overall.
You are expecting Switch/DS/Wii-like numbers from Xbox? That's not realistic. At least not at this point. 140k on a weekly basis is exactely what PS3/X360/3DS were able to do. All consoles landed around 80M. But I guess that Xbox Series has a strong second half of its lifetime with all those aquisitions.
Xseries can hit 90 million mark +-

It is, and I know someone will yell "supply constrained" about the PS5 and Xbox Series, but that only applies to that side of the argument. Yes, both of those could be selling more if more could be produced. But that doesn't take away that Switch is still selling 370,000+ consoles in a week lol. And those people buying Nintendo are almost certainly not the same people who can't buy a PS5/XSX and "gave up" and got a Switch instead.
No one is denying the demand for the new consoles is high. I think people are just surprised and impressed that a 5 year old console is still selling this well
Not surprised at all, Nintendo was the perfect console for the lockdowns, especially if there was only 1 tv in the house.
And now we just got a brand new pokemon. This year, with advance wars, breath of the wild 2, Kirby, bayonetta 3, splatoon 3 and maybe more unannounced games, switch will keep selling.
They would only need to bring a new open world mario and that would guaranteed high sales for another 2 years.
Also the switch console is a console that gets bought a second time for many people, due to battery failures and stuff like that. I know of people who couldn't charge their switch and just bought a new one due to being out of warranty. Sometimes is an easy fix but most people wouldn't know. I had an issue like that, with one of my joycons which wouldn't charge no matter what, I tried everything even bought third party charger, in the end I just decided it was easier to pay 80 dollars for a new pair, fortunately it was not the console itself.
People often buy a new console when their old one goes bad. That's not unique to the switch because it has a battery. My brother bought a new PS3 when his first one died. A friend bought a PS4 pro even though he had a PS4.
One person buying multiple consoles is not unique to the switch. There are a lot of reasons for it for every console.
Did you even read what i wrote? He said that switch outsells ps5 and X combined. I said that when there are NO consoles available to buy, it's only natural to have switch outselling them. I didnt say that switch is selling because there are no the other consoles on the market. Jeez

Whatever the case, ignoring the fact that something that is nowhere to found for purchase gets outselled, is NOT crazy. And that is my point.
Good Switch and Xbox numbers. Rather disappointing PS5 numbers. Crazy that the XBS is shead of the PS5 in Oceania.
New Zealand is very much playstation territory. Australia has four times the market and is a bit more forgiving of xbox, but we mostly disliked xbox one. Xbox Series is a better product that people like more, but I’ve seen some people buy Xbox recently just because they were sick of waiting for PS5 and Xbox Series was in stock that fortnight.

Yes, 360 was very popular here in Australia as far as hardware sales.
Not disappointing at all, I'm actually surprised, because I don't see any of these consoles for sale anywhere, so I wonder where are these 150 thousand each coming from. I wouldn't mind getting an xbox if I could find it for 500 dollars.

There were reports of Sony air-freighting PS5 units in to some markets (the UK at a minimum, but possibly others) in the lead-up to Christmas. Any chance Microsoft didn't do the same, meaning they have Series X|S units built around the same time that are just now arriving by sea?

This is maybe the only week in the first half of the year where Switch is up YoY. At least until Splatoon 3 launches. 2021 had crazy numbers in its first half (Super Mario 3D World, Monster Hunter Rise). Switch was almost not below 400k from February until May 2021. Hard times are coming...
Switch crazy numbers for 2021 were mostly due to lockdowns and animal crossing, monster hunter is a niche title, and mario 3d was only DLC.
The question for 2022 is if pokemon arceus has the same impact as animal crossing had.
Super Mario 3D World week sold 498k consoles, Monster Hunter Rise week sold 772k. Animal Crossing week was 2020 and sold 1'030k (triple as much as Arceus), but I was comparing this year with last year. I don't see Kirby to push any significant hardware. Pokemon Arceus hasn't pushed hardware above 400k, so the impact is clearly below the other mentioned titles.
My point was, animal cross had long legs, it was very popular for a long time, such didn't happen with any other game on switch, pokemon maybe, but there's more games to hold the switch sales, for me its advance wars and rune factory 5, also kirby, splatoon 3, bayonetta 3. Breath of the wild 2. Switch will be fine for a long time.
Oh I forgot the mario 3d launch on switch was the complete game, I thought it was already release years before, I was confusing with the wiiU.
For me Mario 3d stars was a more important release than mario 3d as 3d stars is a bigger upgrade than mario 3d which looked the same as on the wiiU.

Animal Crossing was a year before. And if you say Monster Hunter Rise is niche you are delusional, it sold 8 million. It sold more than Resident Evil Village.

Maybe the rumors of Sony increasing PS4 production might be true because this looks like PS5 output has been halved. MS didnt increase or decrease their Series output but Sony definitely did. Both use the same fabs so something must be up with Sony side of things. They lowered their estimates overall but this is really odd for the week.
There were reports of Sony air-freighting units to some markets in the lead-up to Christmas. Post-Christmas they likely went back to shipping them entirely by sea again. Perhaps that has created a lull in between the end of the air-freighting, while we wait for the sea shipping to catch up? Whereas Microsoft maybe didn't do as much (if any?) holiday 2021 air-freighting, so is maintaining more consistent delivery?
This MAY be reflective of reduced production, but it could just as easily be related to shipping lead-times instead and have nothing to do with production.
Why can't Sony make more PS5s?
Materials shortages globally. The PS5 is a large and powerful console. The Xbox Series X is presumably also suffering immensely from the same shortage. Would not be surprised if the vast bulk of those Xbox sales are the Series S.

A parts shortage only exists for theautomotive industry. And only because they assumed demand would go down instead of shoot through the roof so they cut down their orders significantly. So they have a massive backlog. With game consoles it is the simple matter of it taking time for production to ramp up and in this early stage very vulnerable to delays. Not a hard cap on their capabilities.
So by your logic I can go out now and easily purchase a 3080 for my PC, which I have been waiting to do for a full year, I have had the cash waiting. Please let me know where I can buy it.

Funny, you were able to know sony's prediction, but you do not know whats going on with the chip shortage. Makes no sense to me how you can at the same time follow the news and also not follow them.
what a tragedy the ps5 won't even reach 25 million this year. the ps5 will be the new ps3, ps4 will be the last sony console to exceed 100 million.
Yes it will. It's currently at 17.3m so it needs just 7.7m in 2022 to reach 25m, even with supply problems that will be very easy.
PS3 numbers were fantastic, what are you talking about. 80 million is great for a console. For comparison xbox one had about 50-60 million, xbox 360 had about 80 million, gamecube and xbox had about 24 million, wiiU had 14 million.
But the shortage of chips will be over by 2023, so the ps3 will reach 100 million in the end. And with the fast ssd and good processor, I believe thee new consoles have longer legs than previous generation where they were already severely outdated by the PC. The processors on the ps4 and xbox one were at least 10 years outdated when they launched, so were the hard drives.
The chip shortage may be over at the wholesale level by 2023, but likely not a retail. If and when they finally catch up on chip production, there will then be significant delays while systems get manufactured, and then further delays while they get shipped around the world to stores. My prediction is that things will finally start to really get caught up in late summer 2023 at the earliest, but at that point demand will be shifting into high gear for the holiday selling season and things will get scarce again. So I predict that it will be spring 2024 at the earliest before you can easily buy whatever game console you want.
BTW, grammatically, "by 2023" means prior to 2023, meaning the end of 2022 at the latest. Is that what you meant, or did you mean sometime during 2023?
grammatically, by 2023 means up to 2023, so anywhere up to 31 December 2023.
There will be consoles available by early 2023 I believe. Things will pick up from the end of 2022.

True, by 2024 there are at least 2 new chip foundries coming. Intel, TSMC and Samsung started investing into this back in 2020. So the production is going to increase by a huge margin.
