Wow, it could surpass Pokemon soon. I've never thought that AC is such a big IP.

New Leaf proved how big AC is getting. Even a spin-off like Happy Home Designer did pretty well. It's not a given, but there's a chance AC: NH might become the best-selling game of all-time in Japan. Pokemon Red/Green/Blue sold 10.22 million in Japan. AC:NH could pass that, though it would be a heck of a battle.

To put this launch into perspective Animal Crossing: New Horizons outsold the lifetime sales of new Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan after only two weeks on sale. Massive numbers.

The Japanese launch was huge. They're over a million units up on first week sales of New Leaf and second week sales matched first week sales of New Leaf. Then there's digital copies to take into account on top of that. They're definitely on track to sell over 6 million copies in Japan which would put it level with Pokemon Gold/Silver (6,088,144) according to game data library.

Red/Green/Blue (7,936,360) seems beyond it unless Nintendo ever reveals digital sales for Japan, but a top four spot on the all-time physical sales chart for Japan seems within reach. A top three spot taken by beating New Super Mario Bros on DS (6,428,457) doesn't seem impossible at this point either.

Also worth noting that Animal Crossing on Switch came out three years after the Switch launch, whereas New Leaf came out within two years of the 3DS launch so the Switch version is launching to a slightly bigger user base than New Leaf had.

Discussion aside this is definitely going to be the first game since New Leaf in 2012 to sell over 5 million physical copies in Japan and that is just fantastic.
