October 2019 is the 32nd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the combined sales of the 3DS and Wii U by 497,401 units when compared to the Switch during the same timeframe. In the last 12 months the gap has grown in favor of the Switch by 2.04 million units. The 3DS and Wii U is currently ahead of the Switch by 3.18 million units.
The 3DS launched in February 2011 (however, 3DS sales have been aligned to March 2011, since it only launched at the end of February in Japan), the Wii U launched in November 2012, and the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. The Switch has sold 40.74 million units, while the 3DS and Wii U have sold 43.91 million units during the same timeframe.

The switch is proving that Nintendo made the right choice of combining their hardware into one that does both. I have zero doubt that the switch will pass the both of them and never look back. I'm happy to see their vision being realized. The switch is the perfect system for me. Just keep on bringing the awesome software that they've been doing, along with some solid 3rd party games and a plethora of indy titles. I absolutely adore the switch.
The Switch will eventually outsell both the Wii U's & 3DS's combined lifetime sales, most of the 3DS and Wii U's sales were during the 1st 2 years and the Wii U was pretty much dead after year 3. And the 3DS started to slow down later during it's lifecycle too. The Switch has far more of a broad appeal than both of those 2 systems combined, and with the Switch Lite out now, it's gonna be history
