Xbox 360 Gamers Win The BF 1943 Challenge - Prizes Unlocked! - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 14 July 2009 / 2,588 Views

Looks like Xbox 360 gets another timed exclusive... this time though, its been earned by the gamers themselves.

EA set the 43 million kill challenge a short time before the games initial release on XBLA, Wednesday 8th July, with the winning console getting timed exclusivity of a new map and game mode. The challenge officialy began when the game was released on PSN the following day.

Earlier today, the 360 gamers achieved the 43,000,000 kills, while the PS3 gamers had only achieved 22,498,302 kills in the same time frame.

Despite some controversy surrounding the kill counter and server issues, EA have said that all the problems were fixed. One of these problems was that, 2 days after release the PS3 kill count was still sitting at 0.

The map and mode will be released on PSN when the PS3 kill count reaches 43 million.

This didn't matter because I have been keeping track and 360 actually increased it's percentage lead every day of the contest.

In other words I checked on Saturday I think and the ratio was ~1.8-1 for 360. But I checked like today and it was 1.9-1 for 360.

If PS3 had started stuck on zero or whatever then they should have been expected to make big percentage gains once the counter started working. This proves the PS3 counter was likely never stuck.

Almost a 2-1 win is much bigger than the worldwide, or even worldwide minus Japan, install base lead for 360 and proves 360 is even more popular than one would expect based on sales figures.

@monlosez - Nope Live has way more people - especially in NA. Europe could be more even but I would bet Lives' head start and easier experience still takes the lead.

Kick ass downloadable arcade game IMHO. Shows what 1200 points SHOULD buy. I hope this and the soon to released Shadow Complex push some games back down to 800 points that might have thought of releasing at 1200.

Best part of this article is the planes history lesson done by Procrastinato. Well done...

wow this is the first ive heard about this. The idea is absolutely fascinating. This would be a tremendous way to disperse DLC, IMO. For online games, granted there will be some who say it will tilt console preference to the 360 since it will clearly achieve the online feats quicker so those wanting the most out of games will get a 360.......but the potential to reward the community and encourage constant community wide involvement is an awesome idea.

This may only work for map packs though, as, for example, fallout DLC couldnt be done like this because the dev time involved, but for little bonuses like costumes, and maps or even weapons....i hope we see more of this community encouragement in the future.

I should add that, if the American planes are truly modeled as more sluggish, I wouldn't be surprised if they were more durable and that their firepower was more consistant and powerful.

Planes like the F4U Corsair pictured above, besides being tougher and faster than their Japanese counterparts (notably the A6M-3 and A6M-5 Zero/Zeke) could tear the Japanese planes to shreds with their 6 .50 cal machineguns. The Japanese fighters had some pea-shooter .30 cals, couple with one or two powerful, but heinously inaccurate cannons -- terrible vs a fast opponent when they don't stick around to turn-and-burn with you.

Try sweeping by a japanese fighter, and unload on him -- then just keep going out of range. If they did a decent job, the Japanese pilot will rarely be able to tag you with any serious rounds, but you'll tear his plane to pieces in just a couple passes.

I thought PSN has larger online players.

With regards to American vs Japanese fighters... that's exactly how it was, historically. Truth is, the American planes were faster, and more durable, and with the proper tactics (boom-and-zoom, as opposed to turn-and-burn, which is what you're doing, keifer3), the Japanese planes couldn't compete with them. It took the Americans a while to figure that out though -- so the Japanese pilots ruled the skies for the first couple years, while newbie American pilots tried hopelessly to win turn-and-burn contests with the ultra-manuverable Japanese planes.

Once the Americans got B&Z down, as both a tactic and a design standard, the air war was basically over. Only the very last Japanese aircraft models could compete, and by then, there were no good pilots left to fly them.

I doubt the environment in BF1943 has the room to do any serious boom-and-zoom, so perhaps the American Planes are at a disadvantage... but you should try it, just to be certain.

@kiefer23 I agree, I hate how planes control. I was so happy when I finally killed someone in one.

Two problems* lol..

My one problem with the new map and gamemode.

  1. American Planes suck ass in dog fighting. They handle like bricks compared to the nimble Japanese aircraft which have much shorter turning circles. They should flattern the differences just for this game mode. Extra armor means nothing in dog fighting when the enemy is always behind you no matter what.

  2. Waiting for planes and having them taken by teamates. No idea why planes don't instantly spawn once one has left the runway.
