The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

3DS Vs. PSP Global:

Gap change in latest month: 392,633 – PSP

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,988,908 – PSP

Total Lead: 1,992,430 – 3DS

3DS Total Sales: 59,237,317

In the latest month the gap grew 392,633 units in favor of the PSP. In the last 12 months the gap has shrunk by 2.99 million units. The 3DS currently leads by 1.99 million units.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The PSP first launched in December 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 59.24 million units in its first 62 months, while the PSP sold 57.24 million units.

3DS is still selling fairly well, 100k a week at, what?, 5+ years old? beating the Xone at least. If they don't release the handheld NX at the start of 2017 then the 3DS may beat the PSP. Hard to say at this point

3DS has stayed more consistent then I'd expect though, considering it has had a little bit of a release drought. Just goes to show there is demand for Nintendo systems regardless (even during times of slower software output). just have to make the right decisions with hardware

Don't forget the smartphone market! Both hanhdleds this gen got heavily raped by it!

Psp's had it good in terms of more versions than the 3ds, our house has about 4-5 of them around the place, the later in generation PSPGO is often my portable console of choice for its tiny size, lovely screen and huge range of emulators it can support on it's 24gb of storage.

Yeah, if the March NX Release somehow have a handheld included, we could see the 3DS lifespam much shorter.

Looking at this chart, it seems like it wouldn't have changed the outcome even if the 3DS would for some reason get another two years without a succesor. The PSP has been outperforming it since two years ago (launches aligned).

Nah! I think we would have seen a change. Those 2 extra years would mean more Pokemon, Yokai Watch and Monster hunter Main series games and spin perhaps spin off's. Like how developers might recommend 3DS user's to get the New Version.

We saw that when MHX released.

But hey! The faster we get the next handheld the faster we can get sequels for Nintendo Franchises which only has 1 game in the series per gen/handheld.

Ah but yeah. Those 2 years won't change the fact that the PSP would still win.

That was my point. Another Pokemon/MonHun/YW won't magically cause the 3DS sales to accelerate and pass the PSP. We have already seen that those franchises don't push as much hardware anymore, it mostly sells to the existing userbase.

The 3DS performed really well, but the PSP's long lifespam and the state of the handheld market now it's what is going to seal the deal. At least Pokemon Sun/Moon will be able to keep the momentum after 2016.
