I'm not really interested in this conversation, I mean I even failed to comment again till a bit more than 2 months later. All I'm saying is the sales are definitely disappointing. Anything is possible, from what I understand Halo 5 had more digital advertising than usual. However, I do think the sales are still disappointing when compared to previous entries. Maybe digital makes up for some of it, hell even maybe all of it, but it still ain't doing what past series entries did before digital was on the rise most likely. If it is, then good for it. I'd like to see halo return to it's Halo 3 days in popularity, but that's very unlikely I know haha. A man can dream. Halo 4 and 5 both sucked imo, but I hope they do something great for 6.

1. With Forza Horizon 3 selling 2.5 million by the end of 2016 and vgchartz has it under 2 million it's likely Halo 5 is undertracked as well.

2. Not exactly like what I said above.

Lastly I'm looking forward to Halo 6, hopefully they make the story as great as H4 and great multiplayer as Halo 5.

1. Without the digital numbers we don't know how far down its gone. Maybe its at 7 or 8 million with digital? Its possible based on the 5 million in 3 months figure.

2. Its a long running series, decline isn't uncommon.

3. Halo 4 and 5 are notable games even if you don't personally enjoy them.

Lastly, I'm still hyped for Halo 6.

Sorry to tell you Jigsaw, they're most likely lying. Anyone that knows anything about Halo 5 knows it was, in a lot of ways, falsely marketed to look like the best selling Halo of all time to give it good press and sales. That's not true, just like saying that it has the most Halo players each month isn't true. Like literally...look at Xbox Store's "Top Played Pay for Xbox games". Halo 5 is only like at the 22nd spot, it was behind Rainbow Six Siege ... get this .. .AFTER RAINBOW SIX SIEGE WENT BACK TO 60$. Seriously, Rainbow six siege became more popular when it went back to full price, than Halo 5 was. I'd check right now to update you on that, but there's literally no way this is the most played Halo. Also, Halo 3 launched in 2007, when NO ONE used the online store for major releases. You're also lying. They said Halo 5 had the "highest amount of players SINCE" Halo 3. Even then they're probably lying, in Halo 5's current state there's no way it beat Reach with online player bases. They're probably accounting for Halo Reach's later online popularity, not it's launch popularity. Like seriously, there is no way that digital sales has made up the 5 million difference between Reach's sales and Halo 5's sales. Reach sold much faster than Halo 5 and probably had more online users in it's first year. Plus, Halo 5 includes campaign,forge, and other game modes as "online active users". Halo Reach never did, they only counted multiplayer specific users. So yea jigsaw...they're lying lol.

Halo 3 had 100k digital max.

They didn't. And if they did - they're lying or obscuring that information. Just like when they said Halo 5 was the "most profitable" Halo game at launch despite selling worse than almost every Halo game ever at launch. Halo 3 probably surpassed 15 million copies since launch including digital. The launch of that game was EPIC. Halo 5 will never make that amount.

Sales certainly fall in line with the Xbox One install base, given that consoles that aren't leading in sales tend to have less legs for all their games. Halo 5 is actually the 4th best selling Xbox One game, understandably behind 2 CODs and GTA5.

Must say the free updates and with firefight added, the community is actively coming back. 343 is certainly trying their best here and the sales discounts and temporary free downloads will go a long way to keep the community alive.

@team I don't think Reach hurt the Halo series or else it would of shown that in Halo 4. I think digital may have to do with these "low" sales and other reasons. I also miss some classic Halo especially duel-wielding.

Reach and Halo 4 have hurt the Halo brand to the point where these kind of sales should be expected. Halo 5 was not a perfect Halo game, but it is a decent video game. 343i has stated it has the best player retention besides Halo 3, but warzone has a bigger population than all of arena combined. Classic Halo is all but dead. It's not the same series, and I can understand why many are still frustrated. I miss many things about the older Halo games, but Halo 5 is still one of the best FPS on current gen.

To add to my previous post (since we can't edit these comments), there was one person quote in that article making the same "50% digital" claim, but doesn't really back it up himself. So, the article has conflicting information. It's quite unfortunate that we rarely get reliable digital sales figures, but if Halo 5's digital sales percentage in launch month was about 50% or so, that's some sort of record. Even if it was 50%, that would have put launch month sales in the U.S. at around 1.7M, still far, far short of previous games, and the observation about necessarily declining digital ratios over time still stands. At best, with digital Halo 5 stands at probably about 4.5M globally, about 60% of where Halo 3 was at this point in its life.

It's not our responsibility to cite your sources for you, roborad. Meanwhile, here is a citation for a source indicating that Halo 5's digital sales percentage for launch month was not in excess of the normal upper limits for AAA titles (20-25%): http://www.gamespot.com/articles/halo-5-star-wars-battlefront-assassins-creed-syndi/1100-6432535/

And as Ryng pointed out, digital sales are obviously far more heavily front-loaded than physical sales. While some titles can derive upwards of a quarter of their sales from digital in the early days or weeks, overall digital makes up a far smaller percentage of sales for "AAA"/retail-release titles. A report from DFC Intelligence released last year indicated that, excluding bundled software (which is mostly digital these days), physical copies outside digital by a nearly 18-to-1 ratio, meaning that for the whole year only about 5% of all sales of retail-release titles were digital downloads.

@Ryng

If you want the source, go find it. It was in a couple of articles during launch week.
And nobody except Microsoft is going to know exact digital sales. I'm just going based off of what some analysts/researchers were saying about Halo 5 digital sales coupled with Microsoft's Halo 5 digital sales comments. That's the closest things we have for Halo 5 digital sales, unless, of course, you go ask MS to clarify exact digital sales.

That's the last I'll speak on digital sales. And like I said, if you want the source, go find it if you're interested.

And i said should be better talk about this in another thread, though, if you guys really wanna discuss about this new battle, you are welcome. But i'm not the guy who started this, like other said.

And please, now i wanna see the source for those 50% digital sales. Cause last time i saw Halo digital sales were way, WAY lower than 50%. Even lower than 30%. First week of sales in USA were ~1.3m, with 935,000 at retail, which mean first week in USA digital sales were ~28%. And all times, ( for all times i seriusly mean all times) in the long run digital sales drop like a rock, and the retail ratio increase thanks retailer promotion / pricedrop. In short, this is lucky if has 25% digital. The avg of games is close to ~20%, Halo 5 is most likely at this level or just a bit better. Not to mention that the game is also overtracked, like i already showed, with official source aka NPD / GFK.

What i see in this wall are people who talk about undertracked and huge digital sales withouth any source, honestly.

I think Halo 5's sales can surpass Splatoon's unless Nintendo releases Splatoon on their next console, I think that once the NX is out the Wii U will die fast. Splatoon also didn't have COD and BF releasing right around the corner after it came out, it doesn't have anything to compete with every other mainstream AAA fps that comes out on Xbox, also it didn't have to deal with a pissed off fanbase because of MCC issues and no split screen etc.

I mean, how can you say is undertracked PHYSICALLY? I can understand digital and all, but NPD is a fact, according to NPD Halo has sold a bit over 1.8m including bundle in USA. VGC has Halo 5 at almost 2m (1.98m), so, that's overtracked in USA.
And USA is usually 90% of NA sales, so, probabily a bit over 2m in NA by end of 2015 (2.1m MAX).

Then we know Halo 5 has surpassed 100k in Germany in February 2015, but VGC has Halo 5 at >120k by end of January.
Then, again, France sales. It's under 120K in 2015, since was out of the TOP 20 of the best seller games of 2015. But VGC has Halo 5 at >170k in 2015.

Last, even if is not a big error, but still overtracked, in UK by end of Black Friday Halo was under 250K. But VGC has Halo 5 at 261,000...

I mean, let's be realistic please, in ALL market that we have official track from GFK and NPD, USA, France, Germany, and UK, in all those 4 market Halo 5 is overtracked, by a bit (like UK) or huge margin (like France), but is overtracked.

There is nothing to say more, VGC track retail sales, so, as for retail, Halo 5 is overtracked. Then, you can use that card of the insane digital sales, which is funny but ok i can concede it, but please, stop talk about "undertracked" when all source we have say that Halo 5 is overtracked. Thanks.

@roborad; H3ADShOt3; and Mr Pussly

According to the NPD group, this game is overtracked in the US.
Not only, we also know is MASSIVE overtracked in France and Germany, since in France Halo was out of the TOP 20 of the 2015 yearly sales ( so under 120K), and in Germany after January is still under 100K.

So, since VGC track only retail sales, this game worldwide is way overtracked, using the numbers from GFK and NPD.

343 ruined theater mode. In Halo 5, bookmarking a film in theater does not actually save it and films expire fairly quickly due to only being temporarily saved to the server. The only way to save a Halo match is using the game recorder which records 5 minutes at a time. Try recording a 20+ minute match of warzone. It's such a waste of time when in Halo 3 and Reach we were allowed to simply hit X and directly save films to the hard drive. Why would you change this system? Very lazy design.

So Halo 1 sold 6 million copies lifetime. Doubt Halo 5 gets there. What a fucking joke.

This has probably done over 4 million with digital. It'll hit 5 million soon...

WEAK....BLACK....FRIDAY....SALES....

Pardon me but 470k~ seems somewhat off for the two weeks commencing 21st november covering a large before during and after of BF, especially when Halo 4 WC 17th november (BF on 23rd) was 700k alone.

So either sales suck and no ones talking about it (There was a big drop than expected in NPD), Excellent digital sales or vgchartz is tracking wrong

@fireburn

That comment makes no sense. So is it too low, or too high?

Is vgchartz tracking broken for this? Cause weak black friday sales for a huge IP, even if it's off by a million or so.

Doesn't answer my question but better than no response at all I guess.

The bundles probably dont account for many sales because they are around $450.

Are the bundles tracked on the latest NPD?

The numbers don't add up because this site is tracking retail sales and not digital.

MS said about 30% of the sales were digital. If so, the numbers add up, and it's not overtracked. Should hit 3 million by the end of the year.

Forza Horizon surely must be the king by now. FH3 had 9 million players, and FH4 is already at 7 million.
