Yay, well done DKC:TF! Still my fave Wii U game.

P.S. For all those people saying "it's not what Nintendo fans wanted"... the best selling MP game sold a little under 3m in its entire lifetime, and I suspect probably had a similar first year to this game. Don't make the mistake of assuming that an extremely vocal group on the Internet represents the majority.

this game actually did pretty well, considering what it is is a fairly hardcore 2d platformer. 1.5m+ lifetime for sure, so it'll at least track with the sales of the 3ds port of returns, which isn't bad at all.

Retro's Current Game Sales in Millions

DKCR - 6.32
MP - 2.82
MP3 - 1.78
MP2 - 1.33
DKC: TF - 0.98
MPT - 0.61

Tropical Freeze's sales have been a bit disappointing, especially compared to DKCR, but do note that it is critically the worst-received game from the developer. I expect it to sell somewhere between 1.2 and 1.6 million at retail lifetime, likely ahead of MP2. Not as bad as it could have been.

@Pavolink with less than 1/10 of the install base... in which context, this is actually outperforming returns--one in eight wii u owners own this. i see it doing just short of 2 million lifetime, too, as the new dkc titles seem to have some serious legs. not bad for the supposedly dead 2d platform.

I don't think these numbers have been updated in a while. It's been at 620,000 since mid-June. I find it hard to believe that a title that's been in the top 75 all that time has failed to move 10,000 units in 6 weeks. Is it seriously selling less than 1,500 units a week worldwide?

Remember guys what system this is on. The game is a moderate success for Wii U standards. The game will surely pass a million when the holidays come around and the inevitable Nintendo deals this year. Just because this game hasn't been selling well, doesn't mean Retro or Nintendo won't make DK games in the future.

The Metroid and Fire Emblem series had several sequels despite some of them not selling well. Comparing sales to those games and the DK series, they are mincemeat compared to DK. So it is laughable to think Nintendo will ignore the 6 million sales of DKCR and abandon this series just because whiny fanboys can't get what they want.

Whether Retro makes another DK, Metroid, or new/old IP, all that you should expect out of this wonderful company is excellent and fun triple A experiences. If Nintendo did force Retro into making this, I highly doubt they minded because what we have here is a top notch game. The sheer dedication from the team shows.

this game is a symbole of Nintendo of America not understanding the market (just throwing sequels of games, that sold well on the Wii, whether it makes sense or not..)...., of course this wont sell enough during it's launch time.... there are already enough jump'n runs on the Wii U.., but are there any (big) "Si-Fi" games other than the late ported ME3??...

.... if they're going to make Star Fox before Metroid, hope they give the game enough time and not let it feel like an "add on".. (somewhat, what DKCTP felt like..)

It's laughable that someone would think comparing it to DKCR makes any sense. The Wii has over 100 million (let that number sink in) consoles sold. The WiiU has 5.5 million. So considering it has 1/20th of the install base, to sell 500k is really not as bad as you are all suggesting.

OkeyDonkey: WiiU just needs a new IP like you say? Look at The Wonderful 101 (less than 200k sold). It's a good game, too.

Closing in on almost half a million in just a few weeks time is hardly a "bomb", considering the user base, and considering that 400k is RETAIL ONLY. If it were easier to track digital sales, this game likely is much closer to the 1 million mark than people think. And yes, it will indeed "have legs" as most Nintendo titles do, so calm the hell down.

The game sold over 300k in two weeks. By comparison, Rayman Legends sold that much on Wii U in six months. I doubt this game will sell anything near the 5 million copies Donkey Kong Country Returns sold, but I think it'll do well. By comparison, DKC on the SNES sold 9 million copies and it's sequels didn't sell anywhere near that much.

Not bad, considering the install base. However, it's a shame that the game didn't do almost nothing for the console. But, yes, a Metroid should have done the work. Time has passed and platformers don't sell people a console anymore, unfortunately. Metroid definitely should have move systems, even today and with Wii U's crisis.

I predict 400K units sold by June, and 100-150K more for the rest for the year. So I only expect 500-550 units sold this year, and that's not good considering Donkey Kong Country good history.

It is doing respectable for the user base. Really disappointing that this was not a system seller.

Metroid Prime probably would have been a better game to put out at this point in time to bring in a different audience to the Wii U. Metroid has a very hardcore fan base, and it's a niche franchise. Donkey Kong is a tremendous franchise, when the user base is in place, to move a lot of software. Not a lot of consoles.

I don't think Donkey Kong has been a true system seller since Donkey Kong Country hit the SNES.

Salnax posted 08/03/2014, 03:57
I'm going to predict that this game sells about 2 to 2.5 million lifetime. DKCR opened with less than 10% of lifetime sales, and that was during the holiday season. This game, meanwhile, will sell for at least two years, compared to the roughly 1 year DKCR sold large quantities during.

I'm thinking about 900,000 sales in America, 700,000 in Europe, 300,000 in Japan, and about 200,000 elsewhere.
