This week is an important one for determining the long term impact of the PS3 and 3DS price cuts of mid-August. Neither platform looks like it is seeing huge software lifts - but newer software which ties directly to hardware is performing better than it would otherwise. As the 3DS did last week, PS3 probably would have fallen this week without major games, to 20,000-25,000 units. With its first Monster Hunter title though, PS3 probably shot up to 35,000 - 45,000 units this week. Next week should be a pretty steep decline in the absence of major releases. Two weeks from now, with Tales of Xillia currently at 235,000 preorders (a 400k opening looks likely) and a new bundle to launch alongside it, PS3 could jump briefly to 40,000 - 60,000 units before falling through most of September and October, which are the dead months in Japan. 3DS likely dropped to well under 100,000 units this week, but should begin to stabilize at whatever its new level will be either next week or two weeks from now, probably at 50,000 units per week or so. In contrast to 3DS and PS3, which will have fairly erratic Septembers, Wii should see a pretty good, and fairly extended bump on Dragon Quest Collection, which continues to trend for 150,000 - 200,000 units week one, but should hold up better than Tales and Monster Hunter, which will both be incredibly front-loaded RPGs.
Longer term - nothing has a 'huge' number of preorders, but presumably some release dates will be announced at the Tokyo Game Show in a couple of weeks. The Vita release is a big wild card as well, with the potential to make the Japanese holiday season far better than last year if the price and timing are correct for the market.

Why whenever you talk about PS3 HW do you always mention the harsh drop offs, and never do the same for Wii 0_o, anyway I think you're probably underestimating PS3 HW this week.

All I'm seeing is that the PS3 was compared directly to a Nintendo console and was predicted to have a much more gentle fall than the Nintendo console did.
Dang! 251K launch for an port of a PSP game. If that's not proof that PS3 deserves its very own purpose built MH game I don't know what is.
ps4 launch game?
xillia should def have 'huge' number of pre orders already
very good for monster hunter (PS3). ps3 too.
Monster hunter is a monster!hope those numbers hold,or even better, increase!
What are the pre order of final fantasy 13-2.
That's very good for Monster Hunter although I expect it to drop really fast. Dark Souls should keep the PS3 healthy for September but October looks grim. There's Armored Core V which should do good enough in October but that's about it. There's also a constant release of HD collections. How is FF Type-0 looking? I'm a bit worried.
What's in Nov.?
That's an excellent opening for Monster Hunter!
Hmm I'm not sure if it will really score 250k the game seems to be pretty badly coded and plenty of bugs is damaging early word of mouth.
MHP 3rd is a let down because it isn't support right. No split screen play, just a port of the game to the ps3. it also crashes games when you try to play online..
I'm surprised of the positive comments about Monster Hunter for the PS3. It did as well as I expected but on the forums many people were convinced it would outsell MH3 on Wii...
Excellent opening for MHP 3rd HD... BUT MH 3 Tri sold much more in the week 1. I know, MHP 3rd is only a remake... BUT a great game... I want more MH games for Nintendo consoles...
