Weekly Sales Analysis, 28 May 2011 - Wii Surges & DiRT 3 Debuts - News

After two weeks of strong debuts, the debuts this week have a smaller opening; however overall software sales are up slightly week on week. This is mainly due to the huge increase in Wii sales as this is the first full week of the price cut. Hardware is up nearly 100,000 for the Wii, while the other platforms are relatively flat, within 4,000 of last week sales. The Xbox 360 crosses the 54 million mark this week. Software milestone this week: both versions of L.A. Noire shoot past the one million mark; and Kinect Adventures (X360) reaches the 10 million mark. Five games sold over 100,000 and the top 16 sold over 50,000.
Worldwide Hardware

Week on week sales are up significantly for the Wii and relatively flat for the other platforms. This is the first full week for the Wii price cut that took effect last week in America and EMEAA. This caused the Wii to increase considerably to 212,000 units sold this week, pushing it way above all other platforms. That is an increase of 82,000 (63%). After leading the charts for most of the year the PlayStation 3 is in second this week, with sales of 135,000 units, an increase of 4,000 (3%). The Xbox 360 is in last for the home consoles, but remains above all the handhelds. It sold 121,000 units this week, a decrease of just 1,000 (-1%). The DS sold 102,000 units, the same number as last week. The PSP increases just 1,000 (1%) this week to 87,000 sold. The 3DS is up slightly this week, 4,000 (5%), to 85,000 units sold. Total sales increased 90,000 (14%) to 742,000 units.
Year on year sales are up for the Xbox 360 and down for every other platform. The Xbox 360 is up 18,000 (17%) units sold year on year. The PlayStation 3 sold 27,000 (-17%) less this week than the same week last year and the PSP is down 22,000 (-20%). The DS is down 140,000 (-89%) and the Wii despite huge gains week on week, is still down 22,000 (-9%) year on year. Expect the year on year sales gap to grow for the Wii, after the initial bump from the price cut this week.

For the first time since the week of January 15 the Wii has taken the top spot. As stated above, this is due to the first full week of the price cut in the Americas and in EMEAA. After four weeks of a shrinking gap between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 it grows slightly this week to 14,000, from 9,000 last week.

3DS sales after seven straight weeks of decreases since its launch in the Americas do increase this week; however they do remain below the DS for a sixth straight week and the PSP for a fifth week. After three weeks of decreases PSP sales are up slightly this week, but remain below 100,000 for a third straight week. The DS while slightly above 100,000 and flat week on week are down more than 50 percent since the week of March 12, which is more than any other platform.
Worldwide Software
Three games debuted in the top 40, down from four last week. DiRT 3 (X360) is this week’s top debut as it debuts at number six with sales of 96,000. The PlayStation 3 version debuted right behind it at number seven with sales of 89,000. The game launched in in America and EMEAA, with no plans to be released in Japan.
One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP (3DS) debuted at number nine with sales of 81,000. It is the main reason that 3DS hardware saw a minor increase this week and nearly a 50 percent software increase. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.
NASCAR 2011: The Game (Wii) debuted at number 12 with sales of 71,000. The game launched in America, with no plans to be released elsewhere.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include L.A. Noire (X360) at number one with sales of 409,000. The PlayStation 3 version is at number two with sales of 385,000. Wii Sports Resort is at number three with sales of 93,000. Wii Sports is at number four with sales of 132,000. Mario Kart Wii is at number five with sales of 111,000.
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC) is at number eight with sales of 82,000. Zumba Fitness (Wii) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 74,000.

Week on week software totals are up for all three Nintendo platforms and down for the Microsoft and Sony platforms. The Wii takes the top spot this week with 1.80 million games sold, an increase of 473,000. The Xbox 360 with the biggest drop this week sold 1.72 million games, a decrease of 282,000 (-14%). PlayStation 3 software sales is down to 1.66 million games sold, a decrease of 179,000 (-10%). The DS sold 960,000 games, an increase of 130,000 (16%). The PSP sold 346,000 games, a decrease of 13,000 (-4%). 3DS game sales increased 76,000 (44%), to 250,000 games sold. Total combined software is up week on week to 6.73 million games sold an increase of 205,000 (3%).
Year on year software totals are down for every platform. The PlayStation 3 is down 627,000 (-27%), the Wii is down 1.31 million (-42%) and the Xbox 360 is down 504,000 (-23%). The DS is down 529,000 (-35%) and the PSP is down 136,000 (-28%). Total combined software is down 2.85 million (-30%) games sold year on year.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 software sales have remained similar for the last ten or so weeks, as their biggest releases have been for both platforms. The Wii is in first for the first time in three weeks when the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 hit their lowest point so far in 2011.

3DS software sales increase for a second straight week, on the back of One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP launching in Japan. DS software increased for a second straight week, despite any new debuts in the top 40. DS software outsells the PSP by margin of nearly 3:1.

Can't see how anyone can be surprised by the Wii sales. It will eventually happen again when it reaches the sweet spot of US$99, likely at the launch of Café.
@Killiana1a Go back to stupid town, you play blu-ray on your Xbox not.!

The Wii boost will last at least another two weeks. After that I'm thinking the lower price will keep the number relatively high.
Killana1a, so what if Wii isn't blu-ray, they can just buy a seperat blu-ray player.
I still can't believe that massive boost for the Wii...and take a good look at the 360 being up YoY, huys. Because in a few weeks it's likely to be massively down, and will stay that way until year's end (unless a price cut occurs. In which case it may be close).
Sony STILL in LAST place, AGAIN........
after the full one year of the 360 price cut (in july I think) the console will be down YoY, but maybe not with a price cut.
After Nintendo's E3 press conference when more Wii games are announced you will see a very high surge in sales.
I bet over half of those who bought the $150 Wii are red in the face with anger because they realize it is not a Blu Ray player. Seriously, 3 weeks coming on now since my family purchased a Wii. I have not turned it on since the 1st weekend. Family wanted it as a work out machine, I wanted them to quit their whining so I can Xbox 360 and PC game in peace. Sure as hell ain't going to see a software bump on my end. If anything you will see a dust layer counting bump from my family's end.
Wonder how it will do in the next couple of months. I know after September, it should pick up some steam.
Now let's see how the Wii does from here on out...
Good second week for L.A. Noire. Right now it is trending to sell over 5 millions units on combined HD platforms...
360 won't be up YOY much longer.
Cafe won't affect the wii. Lack of software will
we'll see if it lasts for the wii... unfortunately, cafe and E3 aren't gonna help ^^
