Americas Preorders Chart, 28 May 2011 - MW3 Shoots Up the Charts - News

Overview

There are no games in the top 20 to be in its final week before launch; however multiple games increased in their weekly pre-orders. This includes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) which in only two weeks shoots into the top 10. The top five games include Gears of War 3 (X360), inFamous 2 (PS3), The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii), Duke Nukem Forever (X360), and Metal Fight Beyblade (DS). The top four games have 100,000 or more pre-orders. Three games add 20,000 or more pre-orders and six add 10,000 or more pre-orders.

Games in final week before launch

There are no games in the top 20 to be in its final week before launch; however as an extra to non-pro members there is one game in the top 50. That game is Hunted: The Demon’s Forge which is for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 version adds 7,000 pre-orders in its final week for a total of 35,000. Expect first week sales in America to be in the 50,000 to 70,000 unit range. The PlayStation 3 version adds 6,000 pre-orders for a grand total of 28,000. Expect first week sales in America to be in the 40,000 to 55,000 unit range.

Other Hot Games

InFamous 2 (PS3) jumps up two spots up to number two this week as it adds 35,000 pre-orders more than double the previous week which had 14,000 new pre-orders. The game is currently at a total of 134,000 pre-orders and is two weeks away from launch.

Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 add a combined 25,000 pre-orders for a combined total of 174,000 pre-orders. The game is currently three weeks away from launch. The Xbox 360 version moves up two spots to number four as it adds 17,000 pre-orders, up from 9,000 last week, for a current total of 113,000. The PlayStation 3 version also moves up one spot to number 14 as it adds 8,000 pre-orders, up from 4,000 last week, for a current total of 61,000.

Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3 (X360) is currently the most pre-ordered game in America and will most likely remain at the top until it launches in 17 weeks. The game adds 54,000 pre-orders down from 90,000 the previous week. The game currently sits at 778,000 pre-orders. To put this into perspective of how massive these pre-orders are, Halo: Reach, which has the record for biggest opening for a home console exclusive, did not reach this number of pre-orders until seven weeks before launch.

Also in the top 10: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii) is down one spot to number three. It adds 3,000 pre-orders, up from 1,000 last week. The game currently sits at 113,000 pre-orders and currently has no release date in America.

Metal Fight Beyblade (DS) is at number five as it adds just 735 pre-orders this week, which brings it to a total of 99,000 pre-orders. The game has no release date in America.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (X360) is up one spot to number six as it adds 3,000 pre-orders, up from 1,000 last week, for a total of 98,000. The game has no release date in America.

Diablo III (PC) is up two spots to number seven as it adds 2,000 pre-orders, up from 1,000 as last week, for a total of 89,000. The game currently has no release date in America.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) in only two weeks shoots into the top ten at number eight. The game adds 67,000 pre-orders this week more than any other game on the charts. The game currently has 87,000 pre-orders and is 24 weeks away from launch.

Battlefield 3 (X360) is at number nine as it adds 13,000 pre-orders, down from 5,000 last week, for a total of 83,000. The game currently has no release date in America.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (X360) jumps into the top 10 this week as it adds 8,000 pre-orders, up from 4,000 last week, for a total of 67,000. The game is 24 weeks away from launch.

Notable mentions outside the top 10: Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of Batman: Arkham City adds 5,000 pre-orders. The Xbox 360 version is at 65,000 pre-orders and the PlayStation 3 version at 63,000. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D jumps up nine spots to number 18. It adds 15,000 pre-orders this week for a total of 51,000.

I don't understand why people even pre-order anything...I mean I can understand if it limted quantities. Don't get me wrong, I will probably buy some of them, but why give my money away for a few months??? Does it gain interest while they have it? Do I get a discounted rate? Do I get a free gift??

GoW3 preorders are only this big because of the beta. There's a decline in preorders which will probably continue to fall between 10K-20K till the 10th week before launch. Then preorders will pick up again and gets higher when new footage because/commercials will be released. I'm not sure if it's passes Halo: Reaches preorders because previous GoW games are not that big compared to Halo games.

I wonder if Gears 3 has a chance to top Halo Reach. I hope it at least tops Halo 2. Great to finally see a 3DS game on the list. I hope Starfox and Kid Icarus join Zelda soon. After E3 anything can happen.
