Survey Says 21% of PS3 Owners Considering Moving to Xbox 360 - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 30 April 2011 / 14,572 Views

If you've been anywhere near the internet recently, you may have heard about Sony's little security problems. You may have also heard that the security breach might cost Sony something like $24 billion. It looks like PS3 owners aren't too happy about the whole thing.

A survey commissioned by CouponCodes4U of 2,132 people across the U.S. found that 41 percent of those surveyed own a PS3. Of that 41 percent of PS3 owners, 89 percent were concerned that their personal data had been stolen in the breach, 65 percent said their trust in Sony/PSN had been "greatly affected," and 21 percent - more than one in five people - said they were considering selling their PS3's in favor of an Xbox 360.

CouponCodes4U Chairman Mark Pearson had this to say:

As a video gamer myself, this data theft is especially worrying and I'm not altogether surprised that Sony are likely to see an exodus to console competitors. As hackers get more and more intelligent, companies simply have to keep up. Sony has a responsibility to its millions of customers to protect personal details and this data theft proves that they weren't capable of doing so. It's clear that gamers across the country have decided that this failing is enough to switch their allegiances to the console's closest rival.

While 2,132 people definitely isn't an all-encompassing sample size, there is an undeniable trend of Sony distrust throughout the world right now. This breach of security - this breach of privacy - is enough to make at least some gamers abandon Sony altogether (just like George Hotz did - although admittedly for different reasons). The question now: how many people will give up on trusting Sony altogether, and how many will stay by its side, realizing this kind of thing could happen to any company that has our credit card information?

i can't say i know why sertant PS gamers (or any gamer for anf console maker)tend to talk shit about the comp, but its just something that makes you diff from the rest so don't change.
on point: this doesn't effect me in the least as this could happen to any company.
refresh my memory but wasn't it the GM of Xbox live who's account or something got hacked into? hacking is a problem faced by many if not all companies, so don't be blinded as identity theft happens every day, but on that same not Sony should have come clean day 2 if not one.

a point which i found rather questionable

well if you already have both systems but use one for premium services, and the one screws it up and tries to downplay the whole thing for days and days, then to hear almost 2 weeks later that it will still be another month? it seems to me if your limited to the ps3 you have been grounded! NO PSN FOR YOU!

meh whatever, i wont regret it after e3, because psn was free anyways and i still have the ps3. the only difference is i will be buying online content for 360 games and not much at all for ps3 games now. it is my choice as a consumer to make. sony just forced the hand not so much in their favor due to the potential incompetence they showed with it to begin with messing up and not wanting to come clean.

@Mikerox yea two of the best games series around? Pff that's not enough well I mean there are series like fable and forza and all the fantastic stuff they publish like alan wake, shadow complex, viva pinata, lost odyessy etc but no you are right just two games. And Halo? Pfff it's only like ? The most average game. I mean theater modes and forge worlds are nothing special, or insanely detailed stat tracking.

Let's all only own one console and hate the rest!

I considered moving back to 360, then remembered that I left it in the first place because MS stopped really giving a damn about their 1st party releases and so the PS3 had the superior games line up.

Until MS start putting out more than Halo and Gears of War, I think it'll stay that way.

2,132 it's enough for a statistic inference. The key point it's the vagueness of the options: "concerned, greatly affected, considering".No such a direct question as "will you sell your ps3? ".Useless survery.

@Smashed
I moved on to the Xbox360 a year ago! I wouldn't mind you guys but some of you are blaming everything and everyone then Sony for this and like that's not enough again some of you jokers like to spread lies about the competition.

I am telling you, Xbox-Live was never completely down like Psn has been and the problems weren't that severe that you couldn't have fun either, think of Xbox-Live with it's problems, it worked as PSN works perfectly...which is NOT acceptable for the Xbox360 users!

And, I don't need to force myself to go out or do something else if I don't want to...you see, Xbox-Live is working just fine ;)

On the other hand, move on to something else from Ps3 because you are not satisfied with it, not because of this ID + Cred Card Theft.
Though, If it were me...I would NEVER use my credit card on Psn again and absolutely not my real ID. But there is a solution, Psn Vouchers is your friend :)

Now, I am off to Xbox-Live ;)

Good luck all,

@Liquiduval

It certainly looks possible to me. 300million/4.1 is about 73million
40 percent of 73m comes up to about 29 million
The amount of PS3's in the United States is at 19.5 million according to VGchartz

Perhaps they only surveyed a certain demo-graph.
Say... Teenagers or People in their early 20's.

Households that include teenagers might own PS3's more often then a household composed of an elderly couple. The numbers seem to be in a plausible range.

You survey the folks at a retirement home and i reckon you'd be lucky to get 5%.

But there's a difference between being down by hackers, and being down because of an overload of users online, which btw, did not take more than a few days to get to normal.

sorry man still doesn't make sence, an american family on average size is about 4.1 so get the population 300,000,000/4.1 then take 40% of that and you get the number of PS3's in america?? I might be totally wrong maths isn't my strong point but that adds to about 29mill

it just seems that the survey was a bit bogus

@RealRacer

I'd rather it be offline than up with problems, for 13+ days.

Stop attacking Sony. Jesus Christ, companies make mistakes, no security is the best, virtually anything is hackable. We can live without PS3 for a while, I do understand it's frustrating.. but Playstation isn't your life, go out and do something else until it's fixed. And these articles on VGC have to stop, we understand PS3 has been down, and we don't need to hear about how many people are going to switch because they can't live without Playstation for a while. Then go get an Xbox 360, be my guest, none of us really give a shit.

Wouldn't you rather it be offline so Sony can rebuild and improve their security for potential future attacks? Or they could have put it back online and flawed.

My Dad owns an Xbox
My Mom owns an Xbox

Does my family therefore own four Xboxes? Get it?

There are several options. Switch to Wii, Switch to Xbox 360, Switch to PC, Switch to DS, a combination or so on.

Of course, the Xbox 360 option means that people have to pay to play. I guess better to pay to play than no play at all...

I never experienced Xbox-Live beeing completely down and I never said Xbox-Live is the greatest though...Xbox-Live is the best Online-system out there without a doubt!

  • 0
thismeintiel (on 30 April 2011)

@ realracer

Lol, I think you need to read. It crashed completely to begin with. Then for the next 13-14 days, MS had trouble keeping it up and running for an extended period of time. So basically, very few people got to play online in that time frame, hence the reason most people just reported it as simply being "down." Was it really a HUGE deal in the end? No, but don't act like a fanboy and be all "TEH LIVE IS THE GR8TEST EVAR AND HAS NEVER BEEN DOWN EVER!!"

Also, you just completely ignored the link that showed that Live was down in early 2010.

You guys need to wake up and learn to read. Xbox-Live had some problems in 2007 for 13 days, Problems...but was never down! I don't remember Live beeing completely down (AS PSN is for how many days now????) for even a full day...anyone else remembering the Xbox-Live service beeing completely down and if yes, for how long?

This doesn't mean it can't happen but I think some FANboys should stop spreading lies about the competition just to justify their beloved Sony's actions/faults!

@ Nightwish

Try running IE on an updated Windows, without any kind of 3rd party anti-virus or anti-malware, and see how long it takes for your computer is practically useless. It wouldn't take long. I've had to reinstall Windows on my laptop several times because of viruses. Do I get mad at MS for that? Not really. I'm mostly pissed at people who take advantage of any kind of vulnerability to a network/OS and use it to screw with other people's computers, just to try and attack a company.

  • 0
GuiltySpartan77 (on 30 April 2011)

@Pjams actually if it is true that credit information got stolen then they could end up stealing your identity and costing that person thousands of dollars. So i know your trying your hardest to defend Sony but this happening shows that PSN will eventually cost money. I'm sure Sony doesn't like wasting 24 billion on something that could of be avoided pretty easily.

  • 0
Nightwish224 (on 30 April 2011)

Regardless of the company... I'm upset this happened. I do think it's Sony's fault, along with the hackers, too. Why should people defend them on this? Clearly, they're not up-to-date on cyber security. I just think it was rotten of the company to tell customers of this late.

  • 0
Pjams (on 30 April 2011)

Vgchartz is trying to compete with Kotaku for integrity in journalism. Actually nothing that gets posted here qualifies as journalism, so I guess thats why you can post anything you want, regardless if it's irrelevant and completely out of context.

This whole thing is a big giant nothing. PSN will be back up in a few days, and what, what really happened? Did people lose their homes, did someone die? Did this affect anyone in any way except for not being able to use PSN?

I'm not sure what is more disturbing, the media and their insane hyperbole, or the gamers and their complete lack of a single rational thought.

  • 0
gergroy (on 30 April 2011)

It surprises me how many people are sticking up for Sony and saying it wasn't their fault. I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous. Of course it was there fault. Not only was their network security not where it should be for a network that size, but they didn't even bother to encrypt the damn information.

When a company screws up this badly, it is ok to be mad at them people. Just because you like their system doesn't mean you can't be upset at them for not protecting the information you gave them in good faith.

Sony screwed up, it happens, and as a consumer I'm upset and I have every justification to be upset.

  • 0
jv103 (on 30 April 2011)

I could see why people might leave, especially if they connect a bad experience to this security breach. I will say that in my case I have experienced something. A mysterious 39.44 charge appeared on my card yesterday from csgastex.net. Luckily my Bank took action and contacted me. This is the first time this has happened to me in 8 years of using my card online. It could be coincidence. I'm not saying it definitely was the PSN breach, but it was the first thing to come to mind. It could also be coincidence. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing fraud at the same time.

If so, even if not Sony's fault, the two will still be associated in the ID theft victim's head. Which is bad news for Sony, justly or unjustly.

  • 0
thismeintiel (on 30 April 2011)

@ desroko

2,132 may be a good pool for a survey it they actually made sure it was comprised to represent the actual demographics that make up gamers as a whole, which I doubt they did. Plus, it wasn't 2,132, but in fact only 853. You can't factor in the overall amount of people used for the survey because those who didn't even own a PS3 don't even count in the results. And I'm sure that using only 853 random people, without taking demographics into consideration would increase the margin of error greatly.

Out of 2132 surveyed, 40% own a PS3. That's about 853 surveyed.

Of the 853 that own a PS3... 21% are considering moving to Xbox. That's about 179 people.

There are almost 50million sold PS3 according to this site, though we can't say there are 50million unique users. Out of that number 179 want to buy another console.

Yep. Its definitely a 'trend' worth news.

I love how users get reported and warned for fanboyism... but the articles themselves aren't any better."

That's not actually how opinion research works. It's governed by mathematical laws - for any given population, a sample size of x will reveal the true proportions (y) of the population, within a certain margin of error (z). So y = x +/- z

A sample size of 2200 is actually quite substantial - when I worked with opinion polling, the rule of thumb was that 1000 was the most you would need for most purposes, as diminishing returns kicks in heavily after that.

In any case, the margin of error for this poll is 1.7% at 95% confidence. Assuming that this is a random sample, and the article appears to make that case, that means there's a 95% chance that the true number of switchers is between 19% and 23%.

Really gotta question the validity of some of these posters. Though this is not something to ignore, it is not something you throw away your equipment over or have to completely switch to a different company for. heck, I say having both ps3 and xbox is a the best of both worlds anyway.

There is, however, valid points made over the use of an article like this in an unbiased video game information site. The data is unscientific and meant to spark conflict for conversation. This really says a lot about the direction or purpose of the website. When a source that gives specific numbers that people may use for accurate information uses a 2000 people poll to allow discussion on where people in general are positioned on a topic, there is reason to be concerned about the rest of the data provided on other topics.

Not good vgcharz.

These surveys just don't seem reliable to be honest. First off, one has to question the sample population, age demographics, console usage, etc. There are many factors that should be included in here.
On a side note, I've had my Xbox 360 for 2 years and 4 months. I've never had problems with overheating, freezing, or RROD for that matter. I love it, and use it everyday!

The survey has a sample group of 512,322 individuals, and was conducted over 280 days.
Translation: This survey had a sample group of whichever online community has the largest and most active fanboy population.

I mean seriously, I thought this kind of survey was finally over. Anything other than SquareTrade or MS actual numbers will tell us nothing on the totals. For one thing, I can definitely say the PS3 has a higher failure rate than 2%. Another thing, the only people voting on this poll (or the vast majority) will be people with hardware failures and fanboys trying to hurt the "enemy console". I, for example, never even heard of this survey and my Xbox has never RRoD'd. Neither has at least 10 or so of my friends' (all Falcon or Jasper mobos). Did I or my friends get a chance to vote to counter the results? No, because only people who are experiencing a failure will be googling it and find that stupid survey to begin with. That or fanboys basically.

Flawed survey is flawed.

I got more I don't want to post more cause its gonna be frikin long.

VGChartz should really just stop milking this PSN outage stuff. Terrible rumors, terrible 'statistics'. Please, you are really starting to look pathetic now.

Really? 2000 ppl survey?

are you 360 fanatics really this desperate to gain over sony? is it even really about PSN or its just that you need to creat this load of bull to help you sleep better at night specially seeing that 8m GAP you've been boasting since the start of this GEN go down faster than a rabbit fucks?

ghaleon1980 (on 30 April 2011)

Um, how do we know that those 21% weren't going to switch over, regardless of network problems? People switch systems all the time... no biggie.

Man, based on a lot of post, they don't realize that this happens all the time, even to the biggest companies in the US, and wether you bought anything on PSN or NOT, whoever hack knows all the basic info of every PSN user : Name, address, DOB, password and security question, once again wether you bought anything or not cuz this info is provided to create and accnt and Sony has assured that no CC# were stolen, so I highly doubt this can create Identity Theft(as there is much more info an individual needs to actually steal your identity), and if you are paranoid sign up for Identity Theft Protection as there are many companies out there that offer that service for monthly basis charges or anually(ex. LifeLock, Privacy Assist , etc..). So stop complaining and be more proactive yourself cuz you are not going to gain anything. Btw, I'm sticking with my PS3 as I know after this incident their security can be aswell the best out there thanks to this overhaul, and I can bet Microsoft right now is toughing up their security aswell after this.

Hyruken (on 30 April 2011)

Maybe only slightly related but here in England GAME are doing a promo where you can swap your ps3 for a new 250gb 360. While obviously not the greatest deal to those who don't give a monkies. But to normal people out there who are pissed that their details have been stolen i would imagine a fair few will do that regardless of the difference in monatary terms.
The fact that a company is trying to cash in on it shows there are obviously some out there wanting to swap. Giving a bit more credibility to these numbers.

Slow news day? lol

Anyway, go MS, looks like you just got a potential like, 400 more consoles sold!

Monges79 (on 30 April 2011)

I might sell mine. I'm rarely on PSN anyways, but I have bought a couple of things on the PSN, so my info is compromised as well. I'm very disappointed with Sony's actions in the past few months anyways. I think they basically dared hackers to hack the PSN. All of that aside, I will probably either sell mine, or keep it for the Bluray, kudos to Sony for that move, but I will definately not buy a PS4. And to the last line of this article, other companies would have handled the security breach better. And I think it is beyond lame that Sony is thinking about giving a small something to its PSN users. That sounds awesome. I potentially could have my identity stolen, but man, it sure would be cool to have a free downloadable game!(or something to that effect) This is a massive blunder, to which Sony should admit, and handle like the elite gaming company that they portray themselves to be. I suppose the only good thing that came from this is that the gaming industry as a whole will be ultra proactive with their security measures. I hope Sony does the same.

iplayeverything (on 30 April 2011)

this is just silly. the network will come back on and everyone will play as usual. I have all three consoles and I am not bias in anyway. I have pretty much equal games for each. I tend to buy a game for either system based on which was made better and it is really even. given the extra features of a ps3 and quality of the system, it is my family's entertainment system and most used console. I will continue use of the system and the PSN without worries. Even say, reassured that security will be a main focus with the company from here on out.

All, I am saying is the PSN hack was a bad thing, but eventually people will work to find ways to steal or vandalize information on company networks. The reasoning can be anything from personal gain to dislike for the company. I am a CS student that is currently studying IS and really this stuff needs to happen occasionally to aid in future protection of information.

In most cases of theft like this, the customers will always be protected with a no fault policy if some small chance information is used and does harm. This will not be the last time something of this nature happens to people's information and most of the time it goes unrecognized.

The amount of hate toward a gaming company and gratification that something negative happens to it is more puzzling to me than the knowledge of information criminals at large. Everything will be ok and life on the PSN will continue soon. How unfortunate it would be if people really throw away something they enjoy because of some no good information criminal(s) goal was accomplished.

Even if you realize that a 2000 people survey doesn't mean shit. Why do you post it?

I wont sell mine. Im just going to pack it up until im confident PSN is actually worth wasting electricity on it.

i'll be selling my PS3 too when buying next model release time... xD

kcoward (on 30 April 2011)

@Pemalite Its not criticism its more like jealousy. The same people that pretend they hate Xbox and its games are happy when Xbox exclusives are ported over and when PSN is updated to be Xbox Live like.

butcherknife (on 30 April 2011)

I am sticking with Sony. Recently, I have seen Sony working hard to try and fix past mistakes, I think they will do the same here.

Pemalite (on 30 April 2011)

I keep reading comments where people criticize others for wanting to pay for online access on the Xbox... Well we pay for a better service that is actually ONLINE and thus able to USE!

V-r0cK (on 30 April 2011)

Im sure those 21% were probably the insecure gamers that initially sold their 360 due to the RROD for a PS3 lol

  • 0
Jumpin (on 30 April 2011)

@Michael-5, That won't be known until next week.

  • 0
greenmedic88 (on 30 April 2011)

It's too early to tell if it's effecting sales since PSN went offline last week and sales for the current week won't be available until next week.

Even if there is a dip in hardware sales next week, I predict that once PSN is back online, sales will reflect it's easier for most to just keep playing online through PSN rather than buying another console, subscribing to pay to play XBL service and re-buying any games they're currently playing.

In another month after PSN is back online, this won't even be news and gamers will have forgotten about it barring any torrent of verified cases of individuals who have unauthorized charges/identity theft linked directly to the PSN security leak.

  • 0
Jumpin (on 30 April 2011)

Well, there is no way I am going to switch over to Xbox. Although I will be deleting my PSN account.

  • 0
Michael-5 (on 30 April 2011)

I wonder, why isn't this affecting console sales? Does this type of stuff get onto local news and into the hands of more casual gamers?

  • 0

i love when people say year of ps3 lol...so very wrong

  • 0
LivingMetal (on 30 April 2011)

Some on this site who favors the Xbox 360 claims that PlayStation fanboys vote dishonestly on polls in threads to make the PlayStation look better. I wonder if they think the same about Xbox 360 fanboys when it comes to surveys like the reported one. Probably not.

I'll be moving too, because this never happens to Microsoft.Their products are so superior and secure, like their vaunted Windows Operating System and web browser.

Dr.Grass (on 30 April 2011)

@ruff

Why the hell do you have FOUR credit cards on XBL. That's one of the stupedist things I've ever heard. Seriously, why on earth would you want FOUR credit cards!? You might have more of course, which makes it even more rediculous.

Anyways, I'm just thinking that maybe your a troll. Otherwise, I'm a little dumbstruck. I know some very high-earning people and most of them have 2 credit cards at the max.

Then again, it's none of my business...

  • 0
ruff_romeo (on 30 April 2011)

I don't think people realise the severity of the situation, a GIANT hardware company exposing millions and million s of people's sensitive details. I remember when that happened in the UK, it was seen as an enormous controversy! Its shocking! I'm so glad Im not a PSN customer, as I have a 4 credit cards on my XBL account and it just gives me a huge sense of appreciation for the service that is robust, whether your a Silver or Gold customer! I feel even worse for the PSN Plus customers, who actually pay for a service that Sony said to be more premium.

  • 0
VMEfinn (on 30 April 2011)

And another survey suggests that 105% of all Vgchartz readers are thinking of using a better game website than this Sony bashing one.

  • 0
ruff_romeo (on 30 April 2011)

I have always said Sony are pathetically incompetent in SO MANY ways! But due to their history as a previously dominant/successful hardware company, people naively believe that they know exactly what they are doing! Thats clearly not been the case has it? LOL!
