3DS Pre-Orders Hit 1.2 Million Units in North America & Europe - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 24 March 2011 / 10,624 Views

Nintendo's 3DS launches in North America and Europe this weekend and VGChartz figures show that over 1.2 million preorders have been placed in these regions for the device so far. By April 2, VGChartz estimates that over 2 million 3DS systems will have been sold in North America and Europe. As Nintendo has projected 4 million 3DS systems to be shipped in the year to March 2011, sell through looks fast enough to justify the shipment forecast.

In the United States, day one launch titles for the 3DS include:

- AR Games (bundled)

- Bust a Move Universe

- Face Raiders (bundled)

- Lego Star Wars III

- Nintendogs + Cats

- PES 2011 3D

- Pilotwings Resort

- Ridge Racer 3D

- Samurai Warriors Chronicles

- Steel Diver

- Super Monkey Ball 3D

- Super Street Fighter IV 3DS

In Europe, the same games, minus Steel Diver, but with the addition or Rayman 3D, Asphalt 3D, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, The Sims 3, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D are launching day one.

Preorder data in the USA and Europe indicates that the early winners from these titles will be Lego Star Wars III, Nintendogs + Cats, Pilotwings Resort, Rayman 3D, Ridge Racer 3D, Samurai Warriors Chronicle, Super Street Fighter IV, Super Monkeyball 3D, and The Sims 3. In Japan, three of the eleven games for 3DS have sold to 10% or more of the userbase through March 13. A similar pattern in the West would put top four 3DS game sales at over 200,000 units by mid-April.

1.2million pre-orders, ~700K sales vs your predicted 2million. You get some numbers switched around?

Nintendo is genius. By holding back on their Zeldas and Marios, they're giving 3rd parties the sales they need to justify further investment into the platform.

FInally we got some GOOD news about US preorders from Nintendo themselves. "According to a recent note sent out by Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian, preorders for the 3DS are roughly twice those of the Wii console during a similar time frame prelaunch. Sebastian did not provide exact preorder numbers but did say the ratio was confirmed by Nintendo itself." http://au.gamespot.com/news/6305866.html

This could have been a lot better with a well known first party software such as Mario or Zelda. I am still holding up on buying one until they release a pokemon game. By then hopefully they will find and fix any quirks in the hardware as well.

Lets hope the 2nd batch of 3DS aren't contaminated with nuclear radiation from Fukushima. Talk about throwing a monkey wrench.

Nintendo really made the right call by allowing third parties to step in with their games at launch

Imagine how much higher that could have been with a 2D Mario. Anyways, thats a lot of soon to be happy people. I wonder if they will even have any stock left for the 2nd week

Amazon US has Ghost Recon as already in stock in the US, should be added to Day 1 games in US, no?

Well there you go. Would you perhaps have another source/sources I could look at Jacob? As far as im aware the only notable one i can think of recently is the UK Amazon preorder story.

I have pre-ordered and if it wasn't for me pre-orders would be 1,199,999 rather than 1,200,000!
